A concrete mixer truck driver speeding recklessly down Number 304 Road in the Phanom Sarakham district of Chachoengsao province collided with a sedan, killing the female driver of the sedan after the truck toppled over her vehicle.
Officers from Khao Hin Son Police Station and members of the Phanom Rescue Foundation yesterday, October 8, rushed to assist the 41 year old sedan driver, Phannapaporn, who was trapped inside the severely damaged white sedan.
Rescuers removed the concrete mixer truck, which toppled onto the sedan, before using metal cutting tools to retrieve Phannapaporn. The rescue team provided first aid and rushed her to a nearby hospital but Phannapaporn succumbed to her severe injuries.
The fatal accident occurred at a U-turn on the 304 Road, which leads to Prachin Buri province. Phannapaporn was reported to be travelling to the Khlong Rang community in Prachin Buri from her home in Bangkok but tragically lost her life in the accident.
The truck driver, 46 year old Somkid, expressed remorse and guilt for the incident. Somkid admitted to driving at high speed to make a U-turn at the scene. He stated that he saw the sedan attempting to make a U-turn as well but was unable to reduce his speed or stop in time.
Somkid said he crashed hard into the sedan, causing his truck to lose balance and topple over the victim’s vehicle.
Police conducted alcohol and drug tests on Somkid twice, both of which returned negative results. The truck driver was charged under Section 291 of the Criminal Code: committing a reckless act leading to the death of another person. The penalty is imprisonment of up to 10 years and a fine of up to 200,000 baht.
In a related report, another fatal accident near a U-turn occurred last month on Nong Bua Road in the central province of Ratchaburi. The truck driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle upon reaching the U-turn point and crashed into an electric pole and the fence of a house along the road.
In this case, one passenger was killed, while the truck driver and another passenger were injured. Residents in the area informed the media that this was the third accident in the past month, with more than 10 accidents reported at the scene.
