World Food Day is celebrated every year on 16 October, which marks the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1945. Its prime goal is to eradicate world hunger and assure food security so that no one at all on this earth goes hungry.
The theme for this day in 2024 is ‘Right to food for a better life and a better future’.
FAO, headquartered in Rome, Italy, has proposed this day for the purpose of World Food Day in 1979. Since then, this day is performed every year to raise awareness about it all over the world. With its theme lying in the desire of food security and a nutritious diet, many programs are organized on this day to strengthen the fight against hunger and malnutrition.
Food accessibility is being enhanced now on this onset in India also by governments like Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana and Antyodaya Anna Yojana schemes.
The FAO was established on 16th October 1945, and its mission is that of overcoming hunger and malnutrition. There is a hope that proper and nutritious food reaches all.
This year’s theme is ‘Right to foods for a better life and a better future’. The aim of this theme is to make people informed about their right to food.
India stands 111th out of 125 countries showing severe levels of hunger.
