Sukkot, or in other words “Festival of Booths” or “Festival of Gathering of Harvests”, is one of the very important festivals of Judaism. It comes every year on the 15th day of the month Tishri. Sukkot in 2024 will begin on October 16, 2024 and will run till October 23, 2024. Before the festival, families prepare their sukkahs, decorate them with different decorations, and make reservations for arba minim.
This festival, thus represents the unity, faith, and thanksgiving of the Jewish community. Sukkot, first of all, is a representation of protection God afforded to their ancestors when they made their way out from Egypt. It is during the time of Sukkot that families prepare the temporary house where they eat, sleep, and spend time together.
Sukkot also has an important use of four different species of plants: citron, palm fronds, myrtle and willows, known as arba minim. These represent the gathering of all Jews and the recognition of God’s existence.
During Sukkot, the first two days are total festivals in which the person does not work. From then onwards, however, some work is allowed during the Chol Hamoed days. Sukkot is therefore time when families get together in the sukkah saying special prayers and celebrating.
Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are commemorated at the end of Sukkot. These two days focus the attention of Jews to synagogue where they say special prayers and read from the Torah.
