Tears Over How 15-Year-Old Rescue Dog Tells Owner ‘He’s Ready’ for Bed

A 15-year-old rescue dog has melted hearts with the way he tells his owner he is ready for bed.

Bruce, a Coton de Tuléar, patiently waits by the pullout drawer that serves as his bed until his owner, Jess Baker Smith, gets the hint and prepares it for him in a TikTok video with thousands of views.

The caption reads: “My 15-year-old rescue dog has started telling me he’s ready to sleep by patiently waiting by the drawer I pull out with his bed in.”

Baker Smith, who lives in London, told Newsweek: “He used to sleep on the bed, but he’s 15 now, so can’t easily get on and off. He much prefers to sleep next to me but closer to the ground, so he can get up for a drink in the night or stretch his legs more easily.”

For the past four months, Bruce has been sleeping in the custom pullout drawer next to his owner’s bed. “It took him a couple of weeks to realize the drawer gets moved in and out. So, now, he just stands next to it and waits for us to pull it out when he’s ready to go to bed,” Baker Smith said.

On the rare occasion that the owner forgets to pull out the drawer, Bruce will always stand in place and give her a silent stare until she gets the message. When Baker Smith does, he makes his feelings clear. “He happily wags his tail as if to say ‘thank you’ once we pull it out, and he hops right in,” she said.

The video on the account @jessbakersmith quickly gained attention online and, in the comments, people loved seeing how Bruce lets his owner know it is bedtime.

“Can you tell him that he’s the goodest boy?” posted Jess, while commenter Ash wrote: “I’m in floods of tears he is so polite.”

“That is a great idea,” commented Linda. “My dog couldn’t come on bed it was too high and she was too old, wished I had thought of that.”

Baker Smith was delighted by the reaction online, and said that Bruce is “so different to any dog I’ve ever met, so intuitive and calm. My friends even call him a human. He never barks, is so relaxed, and has this quiet way of communicating.”
