A 40 year old mother collapsed in a flood of tears as she embraced the lifeless body of her 13 year old daughter, who tragically drowned after slipping into the overflow dam in Buriram. Despite friends’ efforts to save her, the strong current swept the girl away.
Police were alerted yesterday, October 17, about the incident at the Takut Tasa overflow dam in Buriram’s Nang Rong district. Deputy Inspector Akkarawat Khunwong from the Nong Sai Police Station coordinated with the Siam Ruamjai Poo-in Foundation’s diving team to search for the missing girl.
Villagers were already at the scene, desperately trying to locate the 13 year old girl. The girl’s mother and family were present, overwhelmed with grief, with the mother fainting multiple times. After an hour of searching, the diving team recovered the girl’s body from the bottom of the dam.
When the body was brought to shore, the mother wrapped her daughter in a shirt and held her tightly, crying inconsolably. The scene left the villagers deeply saddened as they had gathered to help in the search efforts.
The investigation revealed that the girl and four friends had gone to play in the water near the edge of the dam. They were holding onto branches when one slipped, causing them all to fall into the water.
While the others managed to save themselves, the girl could not swim. Despite their attempts, the strong current overpowered them, and the girl disappeared beneath the water.
Police have since sent the body to a hospital for an autopsy and are continuing with the legal procedures, reported KhaoSod.
In related news, a 13 year old boy tragically drowned while playing in floodwaters with friends. His body was found the following morning under a weir. The search was conducted by various rescue teams, and the boy’s family was present, overwhelmed with grief.
