According to the State, Mabula raised suspicions after he asked his colleague to backdate the day he returned his rifle.
“On the 21st of October 2024 and at Hwange National Park the accused person who is employed by the Hwange National Park as a game ranger unlawfully killed 3 lions, one male and two female using a .458 riffle and went away unnoticed.
“On the 22nd of October the accused person approached his workmate who works in the armoury section and requested her to change the dates when the accused person returned the rifle.
“The request by the accused person raised some suspicions and an investigation was conducted,” the court heard.
It was discovered that the accused person was in possession of 52 live rounds and 30 rounds of a .458 which he had not been issued with by the employer and a spent .458 cartridge was recovered at the scene where the lion carcasses were found.
