In Hinduism, Bhai Dooj is the symbol of love and respect between brothers and sisters. Similar to Rakshabandhan, it is one of the significant festivals celebrated on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month for brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters apply tilak to their brothers and wish them long life and happiness and prosperity. Though there is no tradition of tying Rakhi on this festival, but the feeling of unbreakable relationship between brother and sister lies behind it. This year the festival of Bhai Dooj will be celebrated on November 3, in which the auspicious time for tilak is from 1:10 pm to 3:22 pm.
There are various stories regarding the beginning of Bhai Dooj. According to a major story, Yamraj and Yamuna were the children of Sun God. Yamraj loved his sister Yamuna very much and Yamuna wished to meet her brother. On the second day of Kartik Shukla, Yamraj came to Yamuna’s house. He accepted her hospitality, and with great pleasure offered a boon that the brothers and sisters who will bathe in Yamuna and make worship on this day, will not go to Yamlok after death. This is how the tradition to celebrate the festival of Bhai Dooj had begun.
Another legend is that when Lord Krishna came back after killing Narakasura, his sister Subhadra welcomed him with lamps and flowers and applied tilak on his forehead and wished him a long life. Since then this festival started being celebrated.
Sisters place their brothers on a stool in auspicious muhurta; they apply tilak, either of sandal or kumkum, and sprinkle rice grains on tilak, feed sweets and pray for happiness and good fortune. Brothers also exchange gifts with their sisters during this day and promise protection.
This festival of Bhai Dooj is called by different names in various parts of the country like Bhau Beej, Bhai Tihar and Yam Dwitiya. This day strengthens love, devotion and trust between brothers and sisters and the five-day festival of Diwali also comes to a close on this day.
