Emily may have gotten her happily ever after at the end of Emily in Paris Season 4, but there’s one person who certainly got his heart broken both on and off screen: Lucas Bravo.
Bravo, who plays Lily Collins‘ love interest on the hit Netflix series, recently lamented the “melancholic” turn his character has taken in recent seasons, noting that it’s left him “frustrated” with the show.
“The ‘sexy chef’ was very much part of me in Season 1 and we grew apart season after season because of the choices he makes and because of the direction they make him take,” the actor recently told IndieWire.
He continued, “As they made him kind of unaware of his surroundings, of the dynamic, always victimizing and always being completely lost in translation and oblivious to anything that is happening around him and being manipulated by everyone, it kind of became not fun for me to shoot or to see a character I love so much and brought me so much, being slowly turned into guacamole. I really grew apart from him.”
Gabriel was a fan favorite until Seasons 3 and 4 saw the “sexy chef” struggling to navigate a love triangle with Emily and his girlfriend Camille, who was later revealed to be carrying his child. But the Season 4 finale has fans heart-eyed over Emily’s new love interest, Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini).
Bravo admitted that he’s begun to feel “frustrated” with his character’s direction as the actors don’t get “much liberty on set.”
“We cannot change a word or an emotion,” he claimed. “They know what they want and we just have to comply.”
He admitted that it makes him “question” if he’ll return for Season 5 considering his contract ended at Season 4. The season also ended with a serious pivot away from its usual storyline as Emily found herself in a new city with a promising new beau, miles away from a lovelorn Gabriel.
“I really want to see if Gabriel gets back to his fun, cheeky, playful, alive self. Because three seasons playing melancholic, sad, depressed, and lost is not fun anymore. It’s a comedy, everybody is having fun around me, everybody is jumping around, and I’m just slowly sinking into god knows what.”
DECIDER has reached out to Netflix for comment.
The actor maintained that he is still grateful for the show and the opportunities it’s brought him.
“I love the show. It started everything for me. I love the show and the people in it,” he clarified. “With saying that, I feel like I am not being nice or grateful, but when you love something you want it to be… you want the best version of it. I’m not going to lie, I’ve been frustrated with the direction by character is taking. But we’ll see where it goes. The show is not over.”
The show has already been renewed for Season 5, so it’s only a matter of time until we learn if there’s still hope left for Emily and Gabriel.
