A tragic incident unfolded at a cassava farm in Nakhon Ratchasima, where a 68 year old man, identified as Roem, lost his life after being caught in a fertiliser-spreading machine. The accident occurred yesterday, October 30, when Roem attempted to manually dislodge chicken manure from the machine without turning it off, resulting in his tragic demise.
The report of this unfortunate event reached the police on the day following the incident, with Deputy Inspector Boonsong Wang-aepklang of the Nong Bunnak Police Station receiving the distressing call. The mishap took place behind the office of the Nong Mai Phai Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, located in the Nong Bunnak district of Nakhon Ratchasima province.
Emergency services, including the Laem Thong Municipality rescue team and the Sawang Metta Foundation’s Nong Bunnak unit, arrived swiftly at the scene. Using cutting equipment, they were able to free Roem’s body from the machinery and transported it for an initial examination at Nong Bunnak Hospital, followed by a full autopsy.
Eyewitness accounts, including that of Prachuap Phengpimai, a member of the rescue team, shed light on the sequence of events leading to the fatal accident. Roem was reportedly using the agricultural machine to distribute chicken manure in a harvested cassava field, preparing it for the next crop of corn, reported KhaoSod.
However, a malfunction caused the manure to become stuck, prompting Roem to climb onto the machine to attempt to clear the blockage with his foot while the machine was still operating. This risky manoeuvre led to the machine pulling in Roem’s foot, and subsequently, his entire body, into its mechanism, an eyewitness recounted.
“He cried out for help from neighbouring farmers working nearby, but despite their swift response, they were unable to save him in time.”
Tragically, Roem succumbed to his injuries on-site, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
