Vintage Toyota truck making return with key feature drivers of 1984 original model loved – but it’ll have fewer doors

A VINTAGE-style Toyota truck based on a classic model from 1984 is returning with an iconic feature – but fewer doors.

The 4×4 has been given a design overhaul to make it the perfect holiday vehicle – but there is a catch for enthusiastic fans.

Toyota is set to unveil a remodelled version of the 4Runner at this week’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV.

The model first debuted back in 1984, based on a revamped version of the Hilux.

Defined by its customisable pickup bed and open rear canopy, it was marketed as ideal for those looking for something stylish in sunnier states.

Most of them didn’t even come with seatbelts or a rear seat, though these were often added by dealers once they came stateside.

The new version, dubbed the 4Runner TRD Surf, harkens back to its history as a favourite of the Californian beach crowd.

It boasts the same removable top as the first generation, with the hard shell easily unbolted from the bed.

This opens the rear two seats up to the elements, while the self-contained cab keeps the driver covered.

There’s also a decently sized storage compartment right at the back.

It’s at least big enough to fit a pair of surfboards, based on the preview images.

When the top is on, these can be strapped down to the integrated roof rack, making the 4Runner ideal for a trip to the beach in all weather.

And if you do get caught with the top down, or just have a particularly heavy dunking in the sea, you don’t need to worry about laying towels down as the interior is fully waterproofed.

Inside, it’s a bit more tech-friendly than its ancestor, with a touchscreen infotainment system and digital dash.

But the biggest change is the removal of the two rear doors, meaning you have to climb into the back via the cabin.

Sadly, though, there is a catch as Toyota confirmed that the new 4Runner is a concept car designed specifically for the SEMA Show.

It’s unlikely that the company will put it into production any time in the near future.

It comes after a similar revival was announced by Ford – and that actually will hit showrooms soon.
