Balipratipada, also known as Bali Puja, is one of the important festivals of Hinduism. The name of the day is derived from ‘Bali’, which means the demon king Mahabali, and ‘Pratipada’ referring to the first day of the fourth quarter of the moon. Importance of the Festival: Balipratipada is also called ‘Akashdeepa’, or ‘light of the sky’. This festival marks the annual return of the king, Bali, to earth. The festival of Balipratipada has an intrinsic connection with the festival of Diwali, which symbolizes victory for light over darkness and goodness over evil.
Date and Observance: Balipratipada is normally observed in the months of October and November. Sometimes it is also observed on either of the first or 16th days of Kartika month in Hindu calendar. This year it will fall on 2nd November, 2024. It is also observed in different places with different names. In Maharashtra it is known as Bali Padwa. In Karnataka, it is known as Bali Padyami. And in Gujarat, it is known as Bestu Varas.
Balipratipada Significance: There are various mythological stories in the significance of this festival. Mahabali was a great and benevolent king who conquered the three worlds. He was worried about his popularity, so the gods approached Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu took an incarnation as Vamana and went to Mahabali and asked for three steps of land. Mahabali granted this promise, but when Vamana assumed a gigantic size, he measured the entire earth and sky in the first two steps. Eventually, Mahabali offered his head for the third step. This pushed him to the netherworld. Lord Vishnu granted him a boon that he could return to earth on one day every year, and this day is celebrated as Balipratipada.
