The great festival of Chhath Puja is celebrated with great pomp in North India, especially in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal. This festival is dedicated to the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya, which is mainly done for the prosperity of the family, longevity and health of the children. In this festival which lasts for four days, fasting women keep a strict fast and offer Arghya to the Sun and pray for the fulfillment of their wishes.
It is believed that this festival was started by Queen Karnavati. She had prayed to the Sun God for the health of her son, and her prayer was fulfilled. Since then this festival has become a symbol of faith and the practice of celebrating it traditionally started in the society. Chhath Puja is not only a religious festival, but it is also a symbol of unity and brotherhood in the society.
Chhath Puja Dates 2024
First Day (Nahay-Khay): November 5, Tuesday
Second Day (Kharna): November 6, Wednesday
Third Day (Sandhya Arghya): November 7, Thursday
Fourth Day (Usha Arghya): November 8, Friday
Nahay-Khay: The first day is called Nahay-Khay, in which devotees take a pledge to fast by taking a bath in a river or pond. On this day, gourd, arwa rice and gram lentils are eaten.
Kharna: On the second day, the devotees keep fast for the whole day and in the evening, they take prasad after offering special type of kheer and roti. After this, the difficult Nirjala fast of 36 hours begins.
Sandhya Arghya: On the third day, fasting women go to the banks of the river or pond at sunset and offer arghya to the Sun. Thekua, fruits and other items are kept in the puja plate and dedicated to the Sun God.
Usha Arghya and Parana: On the fourth and final day, Arghya is offered to the rising sun at sunrise. After this, the puja concludes and the devotees break their fast by eating food.
In Chhath Puja, people go to the banks of Ganga and other holy rivers and worship with full rituals. During this, the message of environmental protection is also given, because this festival spreads awareness about the cleanliness and safety of water sources.
