Dev Diwali is done 15 days after Diwali. It is very significant in Kashi or Banaras. On this day, people decorate their houses with diyas, and lamps are also lighted on the ghats. It is believed that on the day of Dev Deepawali, the gods come to earth and celebrate Diwali. This time Dev Deepawali will be celebrated on 15 November 2024.
Regarding the incidence after killing the demon Tripurasura, Dev Diwali has a reference to it. Such was a demon that has made life quite difficult for the gods. When all Gods were pleading before Lord Shiva, seeking some aid or favor, then the fight led to the death of demon Tripurasura by the hands of Shivaji. Then in their great glee, when all gods began lighting lamps within the walls of Kashi, it is since this time when this day had become an event of worship to celebrate as Dev Deepawali. This festival is on the day of Kartik Purnima, which falls on 15 November this year.
On this day, special worship of Lord Shiva is done and diya donation is given importance. It is believed that on this day, lighting lamps yields auspicious results. Thousands of diyas are lit on the banks of Ganga in Kashi on this day, making the whole atmosphere glow with light.
Dev Diwali is a tremendous celebration in Banaras. People gather at the bank of Ganga and lighten lamps. Special prayers are offered on this day along with grand processions. According to beliefs, the gods themselves come to bathe on this day and are worshipped with all devotion.
