An 11-year-old girl was killed and her mother seriously injured when a speeding trailer rammed their scooter while they were trying to overtake in Inchhapuri area of Pataudi, police said on Wednesday.
The victim, Bhanvi Kumari, a Class 5 student of a private school in Pataudi, was traveling with her mother, Sushma Devi, 32, who is a teacher at the same school, police said. The incident occurred around 7.40 am on Tuesday when they were on their way to school from their home in Sherpur village, about 12 kilometers away, they added.
According to the investigators, the mother-daughter pair traveled daily by scooter to school. They had crossed a manned level crossing near Inchhapuri when the truck hit them from behind in an attempt to overtake them. The collision caused Sushma Devi to fall on the roadside while Bhanvi was thrown onto the road and then run over by the truck.
Gurugram police public relations officer Sandeep Kumar said passersby alerted the police control room about the accident and also informed Bhanvi’s father, a bank employee, through the contact numbers given on their identity cards. “Two ambulances reached the spot and transported them to the community health center in Pataudi, where doctors declared the minor girl dead. Her mother, who suffered fractures, was later taken to a private hospital, where her condition is reported as stable, he added.
Kumar added that the truck driver fled the spot and abandoned the loaded vehicle, which was carrying stone pelts. The police have seized the truck and are working to locate the driver. “We are actively tracking the driver and plan to arrest him,” he said. The girl’s body was handed over to her family after a post-mortem on Tuesday evening.
Following a complaint filed by Sushma Devi, an FIR was lodged against the unidentified truck driver under sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash driving on public road) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Pataudi police station on Tuesday evening.
