BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Good morning and happy Sunday! I highly recommend grabbing a rain jacket and an umbrella before you head out the door this morning. First Alert AccuTrack Radar shows scattered light rain moving west to east across central Alabama. It is all associated with a stalled cold front to the west. We will likely have to deal with showers on and off during the morning hours. Temperatures start in the 50s, so it’s very mild in mid-December. We’re looking at mostly cloudy skies this afternoon with rain chances diminishing late in the day. High temperatures are forecast to warm to the upper 50s and lower 60s this afternoon with southeast winds 5-10 mph. We could see wind gusts up to 15-20 mph. If you have any evening plans, we remain mostly cloudy with only a 20% chance of a stray shower at 7:00 p.m. CST. Temperatures will slowly cool to the mid to upper 50s.
Mostly dry and warm Monday: Tomorrow morning will likely start out dry and mild with temperatures in the lower 50s. I think we’ll end up partly sunny to mostly cloudy tomorrow afternoon with highs in the upper 60s. Lower 70s will be possible for areas south of I-20. I think most of us will stay dry tomorrow, but we could see an isolated rain or storm in northwest Alabama after 8 p.m. 6 p.m. CST. We will likely see showers and storms increase late Monday night across northwest Alabama as a cold front tries to push through the state. I think the best chance to see showers and storms will occur after 9pm CST and continue into the morning hours on Tuesday.
The next big thing: We will likely see a couple of rounds of showers and storms affect central Alabama through Wednesday evening. I think our best chance to see rain on Tuesday will likely occur along and north of I-20 and during the morning hours. We should trend drier Tuesday afternoon with highs approaching the lower 70s. The warm weather will continue through Wednesday with lows in the 50s and highs nearing 70°F. A cold front is forecast to push through Alabama Wednesday giving us a 50% chance of scattered showers and maybe an isolated thunderstorm. The rain will disappear by Wednesday evening. We will see cool and dry air return on Thursday.
Near average temperatures Thursday and Friday: Dry and cooler air is forecast to move into central Alabama by the end of the work week. We’ll likely see highs in the mid-50s with overnight lows in the 30s. Thursday and Friday should end up sunny and dry with lower humidity.
Cold air returns next weekend: Long-range models continue to suggest arctic air could spill into the southeast next weekend. It will likely occur in time for the winter solstice which occurs next Saturday. Temperatures are likely to be below average next Saturday and especially on Sunday. Highs are forecast to remain in the 40s with lows in the 20s. A hard freeze cannot be ruled out Saturday night and Sunday night. Our weather models will continue to go back and forth on how cold it could get next weekend. I would just plan for cold and dry weather next weekend. I don’t see any signs of winter weather in Alabama for the next five to seven days.
