Merry Christmas is celebrated with grandeur all over the world each year on 25 December. The festival is observed as Jesus Christ’s birthday. However, in the modern world, it has emerged as an international celebration, not just a means of Christianity, but which people of all religions and communities perform with joy. This festival heralds the message of love, peace, and brotherhood.
Jesus Christ, the man whom the Christians believe to be the son of God, also came to this world for good. The Bible says that the angle Gabriel told his mother Maryam-Mary that she would give birth to the son of God. Jesus was born in this small town called Bethlehem in a place called Judea somewhere in 4 BC. His father Joseph was a carpenter by profession and in childhood Jesus used to help in this work. In his 30th year, he achieved enlightenment and devoted himself to the service of humanity.
Jesus’s teachings gave the message of humanity, love and compassion, but the fundamentalists of Judaism did not like his ideas. Eventually he was crucified on Good Friday. His sacrifice and resurrection (Easter) taught the world a lesson in love and forgiveness.
The tradition of celebration of Merry Christmas on December 25 started in Rome in 336 AD. But the date of the birth of Jesus is not mentioned even once in the Bible. It is thought that the festival of winter solstice was kept on December 25 in the Roman Empire. It used to be an important date as the festival of lights and at the same time, a new life also began on this day. Gradually it became a grand festival of Christianity.
Christmas tree is the major celebration of Christmas. It has been initiated in Northern Europe. The ancient people used to celebrate the festival by decorating the cherry and fir trees’ branches. Martin Luther, during the 16th century, decorated the tree with candles and made this ritual very popular.
The second story goes with St. Boniface of the 8th century, when he cut down an oak tree to stop the sacrifice of a child. From that root, a fir tree grew up, and this is what St. Boniface called the sign of heaven. Now the Christmas tree adorns colorful lights, chocolates, and gifts. It’s believed to represent life continuation and keep evil forces out of the house.
Santa Claus holds a special place in the celebration of Christmas. Santa Claus, or St. Nicholas, was born in the third century in the city of Myra in Turkey. He was kind and generous since childhood. His tradition of giving gifts to poor children made him a favorite of children. After his death, he came to be remembered as Santa Claus. Today, Santa Claus has transformed into a symbol of the enjoyment brought about by Christmas, who disperses gifts and love to children.
