Yellowstonethe long-running drama about the Dutton ranching family, came to an end the other night with its Season 5 finale, “Life Is A Promise.” The series has been a huge hit for the Paramount Network and spawned several spinoffs. But the last season has not been received as warmly like previous seasons by fans, whether they feel the writing has deteriorated or because star Kevin Costner stepped away from the series, necessitating multiple story pivots. Maybe both.
But how will the fans receive the series finale? At the moment, the narrative is that they are not taking it too well. “Stupid ending #Yellowstone #YellowstoneTV,” one fan wrote, per The Express. “That was probably the worst final season in TV history,” wrote another. You get the idea.
One person compared the end of Yellowstone until the end of Game of Throneswhich received a famously huge fan backlash: “It’s official. Game of Thrones is no longer the worst final season of any television show ever. Yellowstone has taken that prize.”
The Game of Thrones The series finale was broken because the plot was rushed and characters act in ways that fans found hard to believe. You can sense some of that sentiment in some of the responses to Yellowstone finale: “I felt it was way too rushed,” one fan wrote. “(I) didn’t quit too quick and easy. It just felt like it was a lazy, last minute put together.”
Yellowstone ended with some big twists, as you’d expect. Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) sold the Dutton family ranch to its original owners: the Broken Rock Indian tribe. Meanwhile, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) met her brother Jamie (Wes Bentley) before getting a new ranch with her husband Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), which is will lead to a new spinoff.
So if fans are upset about this series finale, they can take solace in the fact that Yellowstone the story isn’t over, even if the original series is. There is also another spinoff called Madisonalso set in the present, on the road, this one with the likes of Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell. There is also a second season of the prequel series 1923 on the road; that one stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. Saw it Yellowstone the universe is going nowhere.
And for the record, not all fans hated Yellowstone series finale. “The #YellowstoneTV finale was perfection!” wrote one. “Beth killing Jamie and RIP and taking him to the train station, Kaycee ‘giving back’ the la(n)d and all the cowboys honoring John Dutton…was the best ending ever!” And here’s another happy customer: “Beautiful final scenes of Beth and Kayce’s ranch. Thank you @Yellowstone for making it so beautiful.”
Also watching The IMDb ratings for Season 5, the fan rating for the series finale is pretty decent and higher than most episodes of the season. Granted, it hasn’t been very long and more ratings may be coming in, but it’s possible that the fans who are upset are a vocal minority.
Ultimately, the legacy of Yellowstone the final is decided by posterity. We’ll see how fans look back on the series in a few years. In the meantime, there’s a lot more content to come in this universe, whether it’s a direct one Yellowstone spinoff or another show from creator Taylor Sheridan.
