Thailand’s largest rice festival made a triumphant return last weekend, bigger and better than ever, celebrating the rich variety of rice from across the nation in a single grand event.
Rice is regarded as the cornerstone of Thai life and culture, a cherished heritage passed down through generations. This includes local wisdom in rice cultivation, which must be preserved and imparted to future generations.
The festival, themed Tham Kub Kao – Thai Rice, Thai Flavours, was part of the Thailand Rice Fest 2024. It took place at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre on the LG floor, Hall 6, concluding on December 15.
Central Tham, a sustainability initiative under the philosophy of “better together,” was launched by the Central Group to raise awareness about the diverse range of Thai rice.
The initiative highlights more than 19 high-value and nearly extinct native rice varieties sourced from 10 communities across eight provinces in Thailand.
It underscores rice’s significance not only as a primary food source but also as a crucial economic asset for the nation.
This event was dedicated to preserving the diversity of Thai rice and supporting farmers committed to producing high-quality rice for the country, while also fostering sustainable income for local communities.
Pichai Chirathivat, Executive Director of Central Group, stated that rice is a vital economic crop for Thailand, providing livelihoods for millions of farmers nationwide. It is essential for economic stability and food security in the country.
“Central Tham has been actively involved in revitalising local rice varieties and educating farmers on the importance of cultivating high-quality rice to improve yield. At Thailand Rice Fest 2024, we showcased over 19 rice varieties from 10 communities across eight provinces in Thailand, each offering distinct flavours and characteristics, at the Central Tham Pavilion under the theme Tham Kub Kao.”
The production and export of rice are crucial for national income, establishing Thai rice as a well-known export product on the global stage. Additionally, Pichai considers rice as not just an economic asset, instead, it is deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of Thailand, reflecting centuries of rice cultivation and the conservation of native rice varieties.
