‘Emilia Pérez’ Makes a Strong Showing on the Oscar Shortlists

Major names from the music world could figure prominently at the Oscars in March if the shortlists that the academy released Tuesday are any indication.

Alongside expected nominations for the Disney entries “Moana 2” and “Mufasa: The Lion King,” tunes from documentaries about Elton John (“Never Too Late”) and Pharrell Williams (“Piece by Piece”), as well as from a biopic about Robbie Williams (“Better Man”), made the cut for best original song. So did “Emilia Pérez” tracks sung by Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña. Artists with country roots also made a showing, with Maren Morris (“The Wild Robot”) and Lainey Wilson (“Twisters”). And as so often happens with this category, a Diane Warren song is potentially in the running (“The Journey” from “The Six Triple Eight”).

There weren’t any major surprises. Kristen Wiig may be a contender for her “Will & Harper” composition. And some pundits thought Lady Gaga might get in for “Folie à Deux,” from the “Joker” sequel. But given that movie’s underwhelming box office, her omission doesn’t feel like a snub.

(“Wicked,” adapted from the stage show, didn’t feature any original songs, but it is in the running for best score.)

The academy unveiled shortlists in 10 categories; the final nominations will be released on Jan. 17. Here is a look at best song, score, documentary feature and international feature. For the complete list, go to Oscars.org.
