“Two Crocodiles Were Eliminated”
Zimlive reports that the incident occurred on 17 December when Bernard Sithole, a local fisherman, was dragged into the water by a crocodile while fishing. ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the tragic event and the subsequent response by authorities.
“It is unfortunate that a 23-year-old man was killed by a crocodile at Chilo Gorge in Gonarezhou,” Farawo stated.
Authorities acted swiftly to address the situation.
“Two crocodiles were eliminated, and body parts of the deceased were recovered from the bellies of the crocs,” Farawo added.
The decision to eliminate the reptiles was taken as part of efforts to recover Sithole’s remains and to prevent further attacks in the area.
ZimParks Responds to Human-Wildlife Conflict
Crocodiles are a well-known danger in the Gonarezhou National Park, which forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park.
ZimParks has repeatedly warned communities to exercise caution near water bodies, but human-wildlife conflicts remain a challenge.
Farawo highlighted the dangers posed by crocodiles, stating:
“These animals are highly territorial and aggressive, especially in areas like Chilo Gorge. We had to act to ensure the safety of others.”
ZimParks has expressed its commitment to managing wildlife and protecting communities living near the park.
“We work tirelessly to address human-wildlife conflicts and educate people on how to coexist with nature,” Farawo explained.
Measures to Prevent Further Tragedies
ZimParks has urged residents and visitors to avoid activities such as fishing in high-risk areas without proper safeguards.
While Gonarezhou is celebrated for its biodiversity, tragic incidents like this highlight the risks of living near wildlife habitats.
