National Farmers Day, also known as Kisan Diwas, is celebrated every year on 23 December in India. The aim of this day is to honour the unique contribution of Indian farmers and to ensure their welfare.
This special day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, the fifth Prime Minister of India. Chaudhary Charan Singh did remarkable work throughout his life to improve the rights and conditions of farmers.
The National Farmers’ Day was initiated by the Government of India in 2001. It was to praise the dedication and contribution done by Chaudhary Charan Singh for the farmers. He introduced and implemented many policies for their welfare, such as reforming the land, Minimum Support Price (MSP), irrigation system, etc. It was his opinion that ‘the soul of the nation lives in villages.’ Throughout his life, he catered to the interests of farmers.
Chaudhary Charan Singh is referred to as a true well-wisher of Indian farmers. He was born on 23 December 1902 in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh. He was very simple and always had the understanding of the problems of farmers. During his time, he introduced the laws for land reforms and loan waiver institutions and cooperative institutions so that the financial condition of the farmers may improve. His policies are still inspirational for the agriculture sector.
Farmers’ Day reminds us that farmers are not only the food providers of the country but also the basic foundation of our economy and society. Whether they are rich or poor, every person depends on the hard work of the farmer for food. Ensuring the well-being of farmers is essential not only for them but also for the overall development of the country.
National Farmers’ Day is not just one-day celebrations but a symbol of our commitment and gratitude towards the farmers. While remembering such a great leader like Chaudhary Charan Singh, we must see to it that farmers will remain on the right path towards furthering the progress of the nation as well as themselves in resolving the problems which bother them the most. Today itself, we come to realize that if farmers are strengthened, then food security along with prosperity can become our future.
