Govt Must Lead By Example & Also Forgo Festivities, Fix Things: Zimbabweans React to Lake Chivero Crisis Comments

Zimbabweans Demand Govt Forgo Festivities and Fix Nation’s Crisis

Zimbabweans are demanding that the government lead by example and forgo Christmas festivities to address pressing national issues. This comes after government spokesperson Nick Mangwana suggested that Harare City Council officials skip Christmas festivities to focus on solving the ecological disaster at Lake Chivero. Social media users, however, turned the spotlight back on government leaders, urging them to prioritise fixing critical problems like hospitals, the economy, and national infrastructure.

Mangwana had tweeted, quoting an editorial from the Sunday Mail,

“If Harare City Council officials are serious about protecting the lives of residents and seen to be providing some solutions, then they have to forego Christmas festivities to focus on solving the ecological disaster at Lake Chivero.”

Social Media Erupts

Zimbabweans flooded social media with reactions, with many calling for government leaders to practice what they preach.

Journalist Zenzele Ndebele wrote,

“I hope govt officials will also forgo festivities and fix public hospitals with no functional mortuaries.”

Another journalist Mduduzi Mathuthu echoed similar views, stating,

“Please forgo your festivities, Cde, and fix the economy.”

Other users criticised the government for shifting blame to the city council. @rashweatm wrote,

“Chivero is a national disaster and not a broke and inefficient city of Harare matter, bla Nick. Please stop politicking and attend to matters that affect us all.”

Misplaced Priorities

Social media users questioned the government’s focus during a national crisis.

“How about you guys forego new car purchases and focus on fixing the economy?” tweeted @RealKingSlayy.

Another user, @TZvakwana, called on the highest office to take action:

“Same applies to @edmnangagwa. Pliz fix the economy nenyika yacho; it’s a mess.”

The country’s ageing infrastructure also came under scrutiny.

“You guys should be ashamed that since Smith left office, you’ve neither added nor upgraded even a single water pipeline in Harare,” said @Sibandakd.

Broader Frustrations

The Lake Chivero crisis has ignited broader frustrations about governance and priorities. @robpongs questioned,

“Why did the cabinet decide to be petty, gathering to rename an unfinished roundabout while the ecological disaster at Chivero is unfolding?”

Another user, @FloydChiriseri, added,

“It’s now time for our government to step in. The city council has failed.”

Summing up the public sentiment, @Ngoni57822786 posted,

“Nick, the country is boiling. People are in pain. Tell Mthuli Ncube that abantu bazondile.”

With anger growing over the lack of action, Zimbabweans are making it clear that they expect government leaders to prioritise fixing the nation over festivities.
