New Year’s Day or January 1 is, technically, the first day under the Gregorian calendar. The history of New Year’s Day dates back to about 45 BC, when the Roman emperor Julius Caesar declared January as the first month of the year. The day was associated with the Roman god named ‘Janus’, who was considered the god of new beginnings. From then on, January 1 was considered the beginning of the New Year.
In the 16th century, Pope Gregory XIII adopted the Gregorian calendar, and proclaimed January 1 as New Year’s Day. Then this custom gradually spread to all around the world. Today most countries consider the first day of the year as 1st January.
New Year’s Day in India is a grand celebration. Although it is not considered to be a government holiday, the occasion is still observed with a lot of pomp. In most places, it remains an optional holiday. Many government offices and businesses keep working, but the employees often arrive late, for they have probably slept in till noon the day after partying hard on New Year’s Eve.
On New Year’s Day, special events are arranged in most of the cities in India. These include Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Chennai. Famous Bollywood celebrities take part in these events. In many cities like Mumbai and Delhi, grand live concerts attract huge crowds.
New Year’s celebration is always a day of happiness, excitement and new resolutions. People greet each other by saying ‘Happy New Year’. A significant element of this day is – New Year’s resolutions. Many people make resolutions in their lives for positive change. For instance, losing weight, forming good habits and working more hard.
This day is celebrated in India with colorful clothes. People sing, dance, play games, and party. Night clubs, movie theaters, resorts, restaurants, and amusement parks get crowded. They also exchange messages, greeting cards, and gifts.
On New Year’s Day, most offices in India remain open, but the day is like a normal day with public transport. In big cities, security is increased, as incidents of molestation and violence have increased on New Year’s Eve in recent years.
