Dear Abby: Why do friends who mate insist on bringing their husbands with them when we get together?

DEAR ABBY: I have been happily single for most of my life, and I appreciate the friendship and companionship of my other female friends.

My question is about a situation that often occurs when one of them starts dating or gets married. They seem to feel that I should enjoy the company of them BOTH together from then on.

My response has been to decline all invitations, but that feels rude and impolite.

I would appreciate your advice and thanks! — LONELY BARN IN THE MIDWEST

BEST SINGLE LADY: Running away is not the answer.

Instead of cutting these women off without explanation when they become involved in a romantic relationship, it would make more sense to point out to them that women (and men) communicate differently when members of the opposite sex are present. That is the truth.

Couples don’t need to be joined at the hip 100% of the time, and it’s actually healthier for their relationship when they occasionally hang out as individuals.
