A significant traffic incident unfolded yesterday evening in Nakhon Ratchasima when a pickup truck carrying medical equipment veered off the road and into an irrigation canal. Fortunately, the canal contained only a small amount of water, which helped avert a more serious outcome.
The accident occurred at approximately 8.30pm yesterday, December 24, along the Phimai-Dong Yai road, near the entrance to Ban Chiwan Moo 11, Tha Luang subdistrict, Phimai district.
The truck involved was a Toyota Revo, registered in Bangkok, with a closed-box cargo hold that detached from the vehicle and was left severely damaged on the roadside. The cargo hold was filled with boxes of peritoneal dialysis solution, many of which were scattered and damaged in the mishap.
Inside the vehicle was 56 year old Uthai, the driver, who sustained a head injury and had lacerations on his arm. Rescue teams from Hook 31 Korat, Pimai unit, provided initial first aid before transporting him to Phimai Hospital for further treatment.
A nearby resident reported hearing a loud crash and seeing flames along the road. Upon investigating, they discovered the truck had plunged into the canal and observed smoke emanating from the engine area.
Quick actions from the locals prevented further injury, as they managed to extract Uthai from the vehicle before the arrival of emergency services.
Uthai, the truck’s driver, explained that he worked for a transport company responsible for delivering peritoneal dialysis solution to hospitals and medical facilities across Nakhon Ratchasima. He was returning from Prathai District and heading towards Huai Thalaeng District when the accident occurred.
According to Uthai, the cargo hold unexpectedly dislodged from the rear of the truck, causing him to lose control and subsequently crash into the canal. Despite the damage to both the vehicle and the medical supplies, Uthai expressed relief that there were no fatalities, reported KhaoSod.
“I was driving back from Prathai and heading to Huai Thalaeng when, suddenly, the cargo hold came loose. The truck lost balance and veered into the canal,” Uthai recounted.
Police are now focused on determining the precise cause of the accident. Investigations will likely examine whether the cargo was securely fastened and if there were any mechanical failures that might have contributed to the hold’s detachment. The police have indicated that they will conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain all factors involved.
