MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – A fire was reported at approximately 10:30 pm Wednesday evening in the 200 block of 5th Avenue in the Tuxedo community of Meridian. Meridian Fire Department arrived on scene and spoke with three people who were seen leaving the structure. Witnesses could not confirm whether other people were in the building.
Chief Michael Evans confirmed that the city is working to clear debris from the scene to look for signs of any deaths related to this fire.
City officials are asking residents of the Tuxedo community to report any information they may have about the fire or possible missing persons from the area to Central Dispatch, 911, or by calling the fire station at (601) 485-1822.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation and is not believed to be related to any arson investigation.
The Meridian Fire Department believes this was caused by people trying to stay warm. Chief Evans encourages anyone who needs help staying warm during the winter weather to visit the warming shelter at the Multi-County Community Center, located at 2900 St. Paul Street.
