Dallas experienced a 7-10 season with more downs than ups as McCarthy’s future has been under a microscope.

With the Cowboys’ season officially over last weekend, the team hasn’t indicated their official decision on the 61-year-old’s status throughout the week.

However, it appears that Cowboys owner and general manager Jones is eyeing to end the conundrum with McCarthy shortly.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Jones and McCarthy are expected to begin contract talks that would keep him in Arlington.

The conversations between Jones and McCarthy will reportedly occur after the Cowboys have spent the last few days discussing the 2024 season and the team’s future.

Dallas will be able to sign McCarthy to a new contract before Tuesday.

If a deal doesn’t get reached by then, the former Green Bay Packers coach has the right to speak with other teams about their head coaching vacancies.

The Chicago Bears requested an interview with McCarthy this week which was reportedly denied by the Cowboys.

Also, the Cowboys’ assistant coaches will have the capability to take other jobs beginning next week.

During McCarthy’s Dallas tenure, he led the franchise to three 12-5 seasons and two division titles.

However, he has a 1-3 playoff record with the Cowboys.

McCarthy entered the 2024-25 campaign without an extension in place – a decision that was made by the Jones family as the team was coming off an upset blowout loss to the Packers last season.

Dallas suffered a disappointing season, but McCarthy lost his starting quarterback, Dak Prescott, for most of the season due to a hamstring injury.

McCarthy has a 49-35 record with the Cowboys.

He has led the team to two one-and-done appearances in the Wild Card round.

Dallas’s finish in 2024 was the worst record since McCarthy’s first season with the franchise in 2020.

The organization went 6-10 in that year.

He won a Super Bowl as the Packers’ coach in 2011 with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.
