Dollar Tree promises investigation after ‘ripping off’ shopper on gift card – and chain ‘refuses to refund money’

A SHOPPER recently took to X to share a video of a confusing encounter that happened in their local Dollar Tree.

Sharing a scathing account, the shopper warned other customers to beware of the ‘scam’.

Addressing @DollarTree directly, the customer started off the post by sharing:

“@DollarTree SCAM.”

“Buyers beware.” The post then quickly followed up, explaining what happened.

They then said, “I purchased a $50 gift card to Home Depot at Dollar Tree, scam card.”

“Zero balance. Got ripped off $50.”

Frustrated, the customer continued, “Dollar Tree refuses to refund my money.”

The post was accompanied by a 58-second video of the encounter.

A member of staff can be seen and heard saying, “We can’t give you a refund, sir.”

The customer is then told to “Call the number.”

The customer, then confused, asks the staff member which number they should be calling.

But that wasn’t the end.

The disgruntled shopper and staff member continued to go back and forth in the store.

Dollar Tree pricing

Despite the name of the store, Dollar Tree recently added items that cost more than $1 to its inventory.

Most items at the store cost no more than $1.25, but items in the Dollar Tree Plus section cost up to $5.

Dollar Tree introduced Plus aisles to 100 locations in 2019 as part of an effort to diversify its products.

By 2022, Dollar Tree had added the items to over 1,500 locations.

“We believe testing additional price points above $1 for Dollar Tree products will enable us over time to expand our assortments, introduce new products and meet more of our customers’ everyday needs,” president and CEO Michael Witynski said in a statement.

“Our brand promise is that customers get great value for what they spend at Dollar Tree. We will continue to be fiercely protective of that promise, regardless of the price point.”

@DollarTree’s official X account replied to the post.

Sharing, “Hello Scott – Thank you for reaching out and sharing this information with us.”

The discount store then followed up, “Please send us a DM with the exact address of the store you visited and your contact information, so that we may have this matter addressed.”

After this response, there were no further replies from either side, so it’s not clear what happened.

This isn’t the first time the retailer has come under fire. Recently, a shopper blasted the store for its tacky pricing tags.
