A man who is dedicated to helping others

RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) -South Dakota is known for its amazing faces and amazing places. Every Sunday, KOTA Territory News will feature a great face in KOTA Territory. This week we highlight a man who is on a mission to help others.

Scott Marshaus never thought he’d end up working as an addiction counselor for Care Campus in Rapid City when he started college for a history major before working as a park ranger and starting a small business. He now calls it his third calling.

“Definitely the field I’ve noticed there, second calls, third calls, fourth calls would be the way to put it. It’s usually people who have been through some trouble, either personally or within their family,” Marshaus said.

Marshaus assesses people who first come to Care Campus to determine the level of care they need. He said it’s amazing to see the changes made in the people he helps, whether it’s seeing them get a driver’s license, reconnecting with family members or just seeing the realization that they can stay sober.

“It just makes you feel good about what you’re doing and that there’s hope. Knowing that’s why we’re here every day. It’s to help people who want to help themselves along the way. That’s the most rewarding part is to just help provide that guidance,” Marshaus explained.

He added that his job has opened up new layers of society for him, especially when it comes to talking to a population that most others don’t, but it doesn’t come without its challenges.

“The hardest part of this job would be the fact that you want to do everything for everyone all the time. And you just can’t do that. And those are boundaries, and setting those boundaries is going to be the hardest part for me,” Marshaus says.

Marshaus says that despite some tough times, the addiction counseling field will be where he stays until it’s time to retire.

“When I’m here and when I’m doing this kind of work, there’s no other place I’d rather be, and no other profession,” he said.
