Tawanda Chirewa Sent Back to Wolves as Derby County Ends Loan Early
Zimbabwe international forward Tawanda Chirewa has returned to Wolverhampton Wanderers after his season-long loan with Derby County was cut short midway through the 2024/25 campaign.
The 21-year-old joined the Championship side in August 2024. Still, Derby County announced on their website that they had decided to exercise the option to terminate the loan during the January transfer window.
Why Derby County Ended Tawanda Chirewa’s Loan Spell Early
While Derby has not provided a detailed explanation for ending Chirewa’s loan, BBC Radio Derby’s senior sports journalist Dominic Dietrich shed light on the decision, citing financial constraints and the club’s need for immediate impact players.
“For the battle Derby are in this season, they can’t afford to let a player learn the hard way at Championship level, especially when money is tight and it takes up a precious loan slot, so they’ve made the decision to cut short his stay which, you’d think, means a player incoming won’t be far away on loan.,” Dietrich said.

Limited Opportunities at Derby
During his time with Derby, Chirewa made six appearances across all competitions, with five in the league. While his contributions were appreciated, Derby County emphasized that the decision was made in the club’s best interest.
In a statement thanking Chirewa for his efforts, Derby wished the 21-year-old forward well for the future:
“Derby County would like to thank Tawanda for his contributions during his time with the club and wish him every success in his career.”
What Next For Tawanda Chirewa?
The premature end of the loan leaves questions about Chirewa’s immediate future at Wolves. It remains to be seen whether the Premier League club will integrate him into their squad or seek another loan opportunity to further his development.
