A cheeky family caused a more than a storm in a tea cup at a café in Kanchanaburi province after refusing to pay for their cake order.
The café took to Facebook to recount the incident, revealing that the family tucked into two cakes before brazenly leaving without settling the bill. When staff confronted them to settle the bill, the family claimed they wouldn’t pay unless a QR code was provided.
The family, comprising a man, a woman, and two children aged four to five, visited the café at around 11am on Sunday, January 12.
Initially, they sat outdoors, ordered food, and paid for it. They later moved inside to the air-conditioned area, ordering a cake without paying. The woman approached the counter and ordered another cake, totalling 240 baht and asked for a QR code to pay.
At that time, the QR code sign had been temporarily moved outside for other customers, leaving none at the counter. The woman returned to her table without paying.
The staff attempted to retrieve the QR code but the woman, visibly annoyed, did not make the payment and allowed the children to eat the cake. After finishing, the family attempted to leave the café without paying for the two cakes.
As they were leaving, the staff reminded them of the unpaid bill. However, the woman disregarded the reminder, and the man started the car.
The staff pursued them to the vehicle, offering the QR code for payment but the woman refused, stating she would not pay without a QR code, and the man drove off, leaving the staff and other customers bewildered, reported KhaoSod.
The café owner, Tai, mentioned that such an incident had never occurred before in her years of operation. The café is known for community activities and typically does not encounter such issues.
Tai expressed disappointment, noting that the cakes, though sold at a minimal profit, were consumed without payment. She expressed concern that the children might copy such behaviour, potentially leading to societal issues in the future.
Comments on the café’s Facebook page criticised the actions of the couple, believed to be the children’s parents, expressing concern that such behaviour could negatively influence the children’s development.
A Facebook user shared a similar incident at another café, where a family attempted to avoid paying an entrance fee, causing a disturbance before leaving without paying.
