SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — One person is in the hospital and another is in jail charged in a shooting at an assisted living center in Milbank. It happened just before noon Wednesday.
The Attorney General’s office tells KELOLAND News it started with a disgruntled employee, but it’s still investigating the crime and looking for answers, including the motive.
At 11:45 this morning authorities in Milbank were alerted to a report of a gunshot at the Avantara Nursing home, which is next to the Wellshire Park Place assisted living center.
“What had occurred at the Milbank nursing home was an employee had shot a supervisor over a conflict,” South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley said.
Jackley wouldn’t go into details what that conflict was about. But he did say the suspect and victim are both women.
Jackley says the suspect tried to leave the facility right after the shooting, but she was caught.
“Local law enforcement acted promptly and an arrest has been made, there’s no further danger to the public, this was a very targeted and isolated incident,” Jackley said.
A representative of Wellshire Park Place told KELOLAND News no residents were evacuated and everyone was safe.
Authorities from South Dakota and Minnesota responded to the call.
Don: Did the nursing home have to take any sort of emergency response?
Marty: I think everybody acted appropriately and quickly, this occurred very abruptly. A 911 call was made immediately and local law enforcement did a very strong job of responding making the apprehension, DCI was called we were on the scene, interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence, we collected a firearm and obviously a shell casing and we are monitoring the victim’s condition,” Jackley said.
Jackley wouldn’t release the name of the suspect until charges have been filed.
