Accumulating snow today; Strong winds and Wintry Mix Likely Thursday

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) —Snow is on the way today for several areas of KELOLAND. A Winter Weather Advisory has been posted for the areas shaded in blue. This advisory includes Pierre, Huron, Brookings, and Worthington. Expect a general 1-3″ of accumulation, with isolated amounts to 4″ possible. Watch for slippery travel and expect winter driving conditions in these areas.

Here’s a closer look at our snow forecast. Huron, Brookings, and Marshall are on the list for slightly more snow.

We are watching that snow on several of our LIVE CAMS, including this view from Terry Peak.

You can see the snow expanding on radar. Keep in mind that not all of this is reaching the ground, but some steady snow is falling now in portions of central SD.

Sioux Falls will have a chance of light snow off and on during the day. Temperatures will slowly rise into the upper 20s.

On Futurecast, you can see how the snow will expand across the advisory area today. The snowfall rates should decrease by late this afternoon and evening as this compact system departs KELOLAND. Expect dry and cool conditions tomorrow before an Alberta Clipper arrives on Thursday.

An Alberta Clipper will track into KELOLAND on Thursday. We are expecting a wintry combo of snow, sleet, and freezing rain on Thursday morning from northwest to southeast across the areas shown in pink on the map below.

We also expect accumulating snow on Thursday for areas north and east of Sioux Falls. This storm has the potential to produce several inches of snow in Bismarck, Fargo, and Minneapolis. We also anticipate strong winds on the backside of the system along with sharply colder temperatures Thursday afternoon and evening. We’ll have more details later today…stay tuned.

Here are the details of the forecast.
