Alex and Franco compete for Overtake of the Year

Williams Racing fans, it’s time to rally behind our drivers! Both Alex Albon and Franco Colapinto delivered memorable moves this season, earning them the Overtake of the Month for both June and October respectively.

Now they are up for the top prize of Overtake of the Year! Need a reminder of the moves? Here they are…

Alex’s masterful double move in Montreal

Back in June at the Canadian Grand Prix, Alex showed his brilliance in mixed conditions. Starting in the top 10, Albono held his own in the pursuit of points on a track that dried after a mid-race downpour.

Albono locked onto the rear wing of Daniel Ricciardo’s RB as they rounded Turn 10 before heading into the final chicane.

Despite DRS being disabled due to the weather, our No23 slammed down the back straight. He used the slipstream to gain a lead, pulled alongside Ricciardo and made his first move.

But Alex didn’t stop there. Esteban Ocon’s Alpine was just ahead and slowed gently into the final chicane. With almost no time to react, Alex darted to the right, slipped through a gap between Ricciardo and Ocon, and claimed the lead with millimeter precision.

In just a few metres, Alex had turned P11 into P9, and was praised by commentator Jolyon Palmer, who called it “one of the big moves”.

Franco’s Bold Dive in Austin

Fast forward to October at the Circuit of the Americas, where the least experienced driver on the grid, Franco Colapinto, delivered a moment of magic against the driver with the most starts in F1 history, Fernando Alonso.

Franco shadowed Alonso through Austin’s twisty first sector, biding his time before hitting the long back straight.

The Aston Martin of Alonso threw everything at the defence, but Franco’s confidence proved unstoppable.

Perfecting his move, the Argentinian sprinted to the inside at Turn 12, bursting out of Alonso and taking the racing line. He held firm through the challenging sequence of turns 13-16, proving his mettle and climbing into the top 10.
