A host of wrist injuries have hampered Buffalo Bills.
Rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman and defensive end Dawuane Smoot suffered wrist injuries in the second half of the Buffaloes with a 30-27 victory over the Miami Dolphins.
Smoot was placed on damaged reserve and is scheduled to undergo surgery, Bills coach Sean McDermott said Monday. McDermott hopes Smoot can return this season but his recovery time won’t be complete until after surgery.
Coleman was injured on one illegal helmet-to-helmet hit by Miami safety Jordan Poyer on the last run. Poyer’s left shoulder and helmet crashed into Coleman’s hands as the wide receiver tried to inbound the ball.
The severity of Coleman’s wrist and hand injuries is uncertain. McDermott called it “an ongoing evaluation” and said he’s “holding out hope” it’s not a long-term injury.
That brings the team’s injured wrist total to five. Wide receiver Amari Cooper and cornerback Christian Benford were held out with injured wrists against the Dolphins. Rookie defensive tackle DeWayne Carter is on injured reserve after undergoing wrist surgery. Carter is eligible to return in Week 13.
McDermott said Cooper, Benford and fullback Reggie Gilliam are considered day-to-day.
The Bills (7-2) trip to face the Indianapolis Colts (4-5) at 13.00 Sunday.
Indianapolis starting offensive tackle Bernhard Raimann remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol to begin the week. He did not play in Week 9.
The Colts have 11 players on injured reserve.
NFL teams must submit a practice attendance report on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for a Sunday game. There are three levels of internship participation that can be entered: did not participate, limited participation, and full participation.
A game status report must be submitted no later than 5pm on Friday for Sunday matches.
Here’s the Bills vs. Colts claim report for week 10:
Buffalo Bills injury update for Week 10
Keon Coleman, WR, wrist
Keon Coleman injured his right wrist on a receiving end of a helmet-to-helmet hit by Dolphins safety Jordan Poyer on the Bills’ game-winning drive. Poyer was flagged for a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty on the hit, causing the ball to be released on a deep pass attempt by Josh Allen. The penalty extended Buffalo’s drive, allowing Tyler Bass’ 61-yard field goal for the 30-27 win.
Coleman held his wrist as he walked to the sideline. He headed to the locker room in the final seconds and had a brace on his wrist after the game.
The rookie wide receiver underwent an MRI on Monday.

He was evaluated for a concussion in the second quarter and returned to the field to start the second half. Bernard injured his right ankle in the third quarter. Bernard’s foot was stepped on by offensive lineman Dillon Radunz as he rushed the quarterback. He went down on his back and grabbed his right ankle after the play. Curtis Samuel, WR, pectoral
Curtis Samuel played against the Dolphins but was held without a catch. He was the only Bills active wide receiver or tight end without a reception in the win.
Samuel missed week 8 with a chest injury.
Samuel sustained the injury in the first quarter in Week 7 and was later ruled out for the rest of the game.
Samuel started a play in motion out of the backfield on the Bills’ second possession. Josh Allen’s pass intended for Samuel was tipped at the line of scrimmage. Samuel turned and reached for the ball with his right arm before falling onto his right side. Samuel made his way to the sideline but went down on one knee and was watched by medical trainers before entering the medical tent. He went to the locker room with a trainer and didn’t come back.
