We bought a ‘clunker’ from dealership and were promised $10,000 check for repairs – it still didn’t come after 5 months

A FAMILY traveled over 100 miles to buy a used SUV from a dealership but said they were victims of a bait-and-switch scheme.

The Scarantino family traveled from Dunmore, Pennsylvania, near Scranton, to pick up their newly purchased vehicle at Venture Motors in Hackensack, New Jersey.

The Scarantino family discussed their issues with ABC affiliate WABC-TV’s Nina Pineda

However, when the family arrived to get the keys to the GMC Acadia, they said the car was a “clunker.”

“The windshield wiper was busted down to here,” Jason Scarantino told ABC affiliate WABC-TV‘s Nina Pineda.

“There was one brand new tire, and all the rest were bald.”

Scarantino said the car’s air conditioning also didn’t work, and the key fob did not start the vehicle.

“This whole seat belt was cut off. The vents only blow hot air, not cold air,” Jason’s wife, Nichole, recalled.

The family eventually returned the car after the issues emerged and received an agreement from the dealership.

“We got an agreement, and we owe you. Within 14 days, we could bring [the car] back,” Nichole told Pineda.

The family traveled three times to Venture Motors in hopes of retrieving the vehicle, but each time, they said the repairs were not complete.

Five months passed, and the family was still without a car despite paying monthly for the vehicle’s insurance.

The dealership owner said they sent a $10,000 check to the family for their troubles.

However, months passed, and the family never received the money or their repaired vehicle.

Pineda and her team visited Venture Motors in an attempt to recover the family’s refund or fixed car.

During their investigation into the dealership, WABC-TV learned Venture Motors was previously probed for selling cars without titles in 2019 and 2022 and threatened with suspension for misusing dealer plates.

Pienda eventually recovered the family’s SUV with all its repairs complete and had the dealership pay for registration fees and transfer a clear title.

“Having you guys on our side, I feel a lot better that he can’t do this to anyone else,” Scarantino said.

“So, it’s going to be stopped.”

Venture Motors apologized to the family and said he never meant to hurt anybody, according to WABC-TV.

The dealership’s license has since been revoked by the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Division of Motor Vehicles, the outlet reported.

Dealership Tips

Here are some expert tips when purchasing a car from a dealership lot:

  • 1. Set your price: Ensure you’ve calculated your monthly budget before going to the lot. You should include the car’s loan payment, insurance costs, fuel, and regular maintenance.
  • 2. Research: Make sure you know which cars you’re interested in test driving before you reach the dealership.
  • 3. Pre-approval: Secure financing before you go to the dealership. Dealerships may give you a better interest rate if they are competing with an outside bank.
  • 4. Test away: Get behind the wheel before making any payments. A car purchase will be worth thousands of dollars – drivers should ensure they like the drivetrain, steering feel, and comfort of the car before taking it off the lot
  • 5. Haggle: Drivers should always try to negotiate the price. There are so many good cars on the American market – buyers have a strong hand when negotiating price.

Five facts an AI must never learn about you – even your birthday is too dangerous to give away on a chat

THERE are at least five facts about yourself that you should never let artificial intelligence know.

If you’re using regular AI-powered chatbots – even trusted ones from respected brands – you still need to be very careful.

The Sun spoke to top security experts who warned over the dangers of over-sharing with AI bots.

Chatbots seem to be everywhere these days: not just OpenAI’s ChatGPT, but even in common Meta apps like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.

They offer humanlike conversation, but the problem is that you don’t know where the info you’re sharing will end up.

“When it comes to using large language models and chatbots it’s important to realise that your information is going to be processed by the platform and used for further model training,” said security expert James McQuiggan, speaking to The Sun.

“Anything you upload should not be sensitive or private information otherwise it could end up in someone else’s prompt response.

“It’s best to use general information and, if sensitive information is needed for the response, then mask it or use disguised names or information.”

James, a security awareness advocate at KnowBe4, told The Sun that there are at least five facts you should never share with AI bots.

“You never want to share credit card info, addresses, names, birthdays, identification numbers,” he explained.

James added that it’s important to not reveal “anything else that identifies you or someone else”.

It’s best to use fake names and info when asking for more personalised advice from chatbots.

RULE OF THUMB

One of the easiest ways to stay safe when using chatbots is to pretend that your conversations aren’t private at all.

Imagine you’re literally posting online for the whole world to see.

That’s the advice from Paul Bischoff, Consumer Privacy Advocate at Comparitech, who told The Sun that it lets you avoid having personal info scooped up by the AI machine.

“A good rule of thumb is that if you wouldn’t post it publicly on social media, then you shouldn’t share it with an AI chatbot,” Paul said.

STAY AI SAFE

Here’s the advice from The Sun’s tech expert Sean Keach

Chatbots are on the rise – and soon it’s going to be very hard to avoid them.

They’ll be built into lots of the apps you use. For some, they’re already there.

So it’s important to get ahead of the AI revolution and make those good habits now.

Start off strong by understanding why it’s important to not overshare with chatbots.

After all, you don’t really know where that information is going to end up.

Even tech companies are still getting to grips with their own AI products.

That’s why you should treat these chatbots with caution, and limit what you say to them.

If you must ask more personal questions, be sure to change key details so that the AI isn’t absorbing real info about you.

And try to stick to well-known and well-reviewed chatbots from reputable brands.

It’s not a guarantee of your safety, but it helps if you know you’re at least chatting a legitimate AI bot.

“Any information you share with an AI chatbot could be added to that chatbot’s corpus of data that’s used to generate answers for other users.

“You could inadvertently give personal info to the chatbot that it then shares with other users, not to mention the chatbot’s administrator.”

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg says that nearly 500 million people have used his Meta AI.

And this number is sure to rise in the future, so it’s important that users know how to use their AI helpers safely.

Diddy’s trial date set as rapper’s kids and mom show up to court to support him at hearing over sex trafficking charges

SEAN ‘Diddy’ Combs’ sex trafficking trial will begin May 5, a judge has ruled.

The rapper, who is also facing racketeering charges, appeared before Judge Arun Subramanian in Manhattan federal court on Thursday.

After entering the courtroom, the music mogul, 54, hugged his lawyers and waved to his relatives in the gallery.

During the hearing, which was attended by Diddy’s mom and daughters, Judge Subramanian also set deadlines for lawyers on each side to submit their arguments in the case.

Combs has pleaded not guilty to the charges lodged against him last month.

These include racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking based on allegations that go back to 2008.

Combs’ mom, Janice Smalls Combs, last week slammed her son’s “public lynching,” speaking “as a mother that is devastated and profoundly saddened by the allegations made against my son.”

“It is heartbreaking to see my son judged not for the truth, but for a narrative created out of lies,” she told The Daily Mail.

“To bear witness what seems to be like a public lynching of my son before he has had the opportunity to prove his innocence is a pain too unbearable to put into words.”

While she admitted her son is “not perfect” she said that “not being entirely straightforward” does not mean Diddy is guilty of the “repulsive allegations.”

An indictment alleges Combs coerced and abused women for years with the help of a network of associates who helped him silence the victims though violence including kidnapping and physical beating.

Scientists uncover world’s biggest insect a mega millipede the size of a CAR that roamed Earth 340 million years ago

SCIENTISTS have uncovered a terrifying mega millipede that was the size of a car when it roamed Earth 340 million years ago.

Following centuries of mystery, the face of Arthropleura has been unveiled – thanks to two well-preserved fossils.

The arthropod hid in forests near the equator between 346 and million and 290 million years ago during the late Paleozoic era.

Arthopleura could grow to a whopping 8.5 feet long and weigh over 45kg.

The mega millipede has left palaeontologists perplexed for decades.

The body of the creature had characteristics similar to a millipede, but experts had never before seen its head.

They therefore couldn’t work out its relationship to modern arthropods.

But now the head has been unearthed, with its round structure adorned with two short, bell-shaped antennae.

According to new research it also has two protruding eyes like crabs have today and a small mouth for scavenging leaves and bark.

Despite its massive size, the creature’s diet was likely just vegetation from the forests it lived in.

Like other arthropods, the Arthopleura would shed its exoskeleton through the head opening – but therefore left behind clues of its gigantic size but no indication of its facial structure.

Now, with more juvenile fossils found, experts have been able to study its head and find out more about the beast.

Arthopleura was an arthropod – a group that includes modern-day insects, crabs and spiders.

Study co-author Mickael Lheritier explained: “We discovered that it had the body of a millipede, but the head of a centipede.”

To model the head, researchers used advanced CT scanning techniques while also examining the fossils.

The fossils were taken back in the 1980s in a French coal field and were still embedded in rock.

The scans allowed the team to examine hidden details without causing any damage to the invaluable fossils.

Palebiologist James Lamsdell, who wasn’t involved in the study, said: “We’ve been wanting to see what the head of this animal looked like for a really long time.

“When you chip away at rock, you don’t know what part of a delicate fossil may have been lost or damaged.”

Despite the fossils only measuring around two inches long, the researchers believe they provide important insight into what the Arthropleura was like.

Pamela Bozanich: What we know about the Menendez brothers prosecutor

PAMELA Bozanich was the prosecutor during the infamous Menendez brothers’ first trial.

The brothers were accused of murdering their parents, Kitty and José, in a crime dramatised in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series Monsters.

After the series hit Netflix, Pamela appeared in the 2024 Netflix documentary The Menendez Brothers despite keeping a low profile for years.

In the interview, she recounted the experience which made her and her clients famous.

The Menendez Trial

Pamela was a deputy district attorney in LA County in 1989, when she was assigned to be the prosecutor in the Menendez brothers’ trial

In the courtroom, she was in opposition to Leslie Abramson who was defending Erik and Lyle.

The trial was aired on Court TV and soon millions of Americans were checking the news for updates on the story.

In one shocking moment, the Brothers alleged that their father, José, had been sexually abusive towards them and claimed that this was part of the reason that they committed the crime.

Ultimately, the trial led to a hung jury and a second trial with restrictions was ordered.

Eventually, the brothers were sentenced to life in prison without parole, leaving their lawyer Leslie furious that they were not offered the lower charge of manslaughter.

The Menendez brother’s crime

Erik and Lyle murdered their parents on August 20, 1989, and lived a lavish lifestyle with the inheritance handed down to them.

The brutality of the murder, which had been carried out with shotguns, led police to initially suspect that Kitty and Jose had been murdered in a gang killing.

The brothers later claimed that an argument over Lyle’s toupee led them to opening up about the alleged sexual abuse they both suffered at the hands of their father

The brothers claim this event, which took place just five days before they killed their parents, led them to planning the murder.

Life after the trial

Since the trial, Pamela has kept a low profile but Ryan Murphy’s Monsters has renewed public interest in the case.

When interviewed for the Netflix documentary The Menendez Brothers, Pamela commented on the calls to free the brothers which have been supported by celebrities like Kim Kardashian

She said: “The only reason we’re doing this special is because of the TikTok movement to free the ‘Menendi’ (Menendez brothers).

“If that’s how we’re going to try cases now, why don’t we just, like, have a poll? You present the faces, everybody gets to vote on TikTok, and then we decide who gets to go home.

“Your beliefs are not facts. They’re just beliefs. And by the way, all you TikTok people, I’m armed. We’ve got guns all over the house. So don’t mess with me.”

She also commented on her former courtroom rival Leslie Abramson

Pamela said: “If I told you what I really thought of Leslie Abramson, I would be sued. Because she, I think, has lost all her money, and I’m not giving up my house.”

The moment came when Trump acknowledged several high-profile guests in attendance and sent a special shout-out to businessman Massad Boulos, Tiffany’s father-in-law.

“And a very special man, a great guy, Dr. Massad Boulos,” the former president, 78, said.

“Many of you know him. He’s a very successful man. He happens to be the father of Tiffany’s husband, Michael, who’s a very exceptional young guy.

“And she’s an exceptional young woman. And she’s going to have a baby. So that’s nice.

“Thank you for being here. It’s a great honor.”

Tiffany, 30, married Michael Boulos in November 2022 in a lavish ceremony at her father’s Mar-a-Lago estate.

It’s unclear how they met, but a source told PEOPLE that they connected at Lindsey Lohan’s nightclub in Greece.

Michael’s father, Massad, has become a key source for Trump in his latest presidential campaign, as he’s lobbied for Lebanese-Americans to vote red.

Rob Marciano’s fans beg him to ‘stay safe’ as he reports from Hurricane Milton’s terrifying winds in return to TV

FORMER Good Morning America star Rob Marciano has made his return to TV on a rival network six months after being axed.

The 56-year-old weatherman, who was fired from his job on ABC in April, has landed a new job for the CBS Evening News.

Reporting live from Bradenton, Florida, Marciano was seen standing in torrential rain as he spoke about the latest on Hurricane Milton ravaging the area.

Wearing a baseball cap and a raincoat, the storm was seen picking up speed behind him as he talked to camera from the street.

Fans of the star were delighted to see him back on screens, though urged him to ‘stay safe’ amid the ongoing crisis as he struggled to stand straight.

During his report, Marciano noted emergency services had been suspended in the area ahead of the expected hurricane force winds.

Speaking on Instagram, one fan wrote: “Great seeing you Rob, wondered what happened to you.”

“Thank you for the amazing coverage!” said another. “Please stay safe,! 🙏❤ It great seeing you back on air! ❤

“Great to see @robertmarciano back on the national news! A trusted correspondent and friendly weather reporter!” noted a third.

“Great to see you back. Stay safe out there,” said a fourth, while a fifth added: “Feel for you all, prayers 🙏 are with you all x”

On his return to TV, Marciano also returned to social media, sharing a photo from Tampa, Florida with the caption: “Back to work… be safe Florida”

It was his first post on Instagram in over 24 weeks, with the star going quiet following his TV exit.

Marciano was let go from his position on ABC after 10 years of appearing on GMA and World News Tonight after it was reported multiple co-stars filed complaints about his behind-the-scenes behaviour.

According to New York Post, his exit reportedly had to do with “anger management issues”, which stemmed from his split with his ex-wife, Eryn, which was finalised in March 2023.

The pair had been married for 11 years and together they share two children.

Eryn filed for divorce from the star in 2021, with the ongoing legal battle occurring over the following two years.

The same month his divorced was finalised, he was temporarily barred from the GMA set in New York City over “making a female colleague uncomfortable”.

The sources did not share which colleague he made feel uncomfortable or what happened between Rob and them.

The meteorologist was then seen doing most of his weather reports from outside, or in a different state.

Despite his break-up from Eryn, she was seen earlier this month helping the star look at real estate in New York.

Andy Reid makes major decision over Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes’s future for Kansas City Chiefs NFL bye week

TRAVIS Kelce and Patrick Mahomes’ have revealed their Week 6 bye plans which appear to confirm Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s decision for what he’s seemingly letting his players do this week.

The two NFL stars are coming off a Week 5 Monday Night Football win over the New Orleans Saints.

The Chiefs have plenty of reasons to unwind in their bye week after winning each of their first 5 games of the season.

Mahomes shared his plans for the Week 6 bye, saying he’ll enjoy being with his family.

“I’ll be spending most of my time running around with the kids,” Mahomes said with a smile while speaking to reporters after Monday night’s win.

“It won’t be a lot of relaxation, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Mahomes essentially confirmed that the Chiefs’ head coach Reid has allowed his players to take time off this week.

During his New Heights podcast, Kelce revealed that he will have plans this week, but he wouldn’t divulge what he’ll actually do.

“Of course I do,” Travis answered when NFL icon and brother Jason Kelce asked if he had bye-week plans.

“Are you gonna tell anybody?” Jason then asked.

“No, but if any of it comes out I’m sure we’ll be talking about it on the show,” Travis said.

He will likely spend time with his girlfriend and music icon Taylor Swift.

The 14-time Grammy winner will resume her iconic Eras Tour in Miami later this month.

The tour will finish in Vancouver, Canada in December.

Kelce discussing his bye week plans comes as he was reportedly spotted with Swift while on an East-Coast-bound plane on Tuesday night.

The 34-year-old appeared at Kelce’s game in Kansas City on Monday.

He recorded nine receptions for 70 yards in the game.

Swift had missed his previous two NFL games – both were on the road.

Kelce and Mahomes seem to have their chemistry back, connecting 16 times in the last two games.

They had connected eight times in the previous three contests combined.

Unlike Kelce, Mahomes has already shown the world his off-the-field adventures.

The two-time NFL MVP appeared at the Kansas City Royals ALDS Game 3 loss to the New York Yankees in a suite on Wednesday night.

Mahomes may be in attendance at the elimination game on Thursday night as the Yankees lead the series 2-1 and need just one more to advance to the ALCS.

Kansas City will play their next game in Week 7 when they go on the road to face the San Francisco 49ers.
