Superfine: Tailoring Black Style — Met Gala 2025’s theme explained

THE annual haute couture fundraising fashion festival known as the Met Gala has revealed its theme for 2025 — Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.

Here we take a look at what that means and who this year’s co-chairs are.

The theme focuses on the influence of black men’s fashion from the 18th century to the present day.[/caption]

The 2025 Met Gala theme was announced on October 9, 2024 — Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.

It takes the black dandy as its subject, exploring the influence of black men’s fashion from the 18th century to the present day.

The theme draws inspiration from the book book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity (2009), written by professor and chair of Africana studies at Barnard College, Monica L Miller.

Every year Anna Wintour – along with her co-chairs – preside over the gala and the museum exhibition.

Exhibition focus

The Costume Institute’s spring 2025 exhibition will showcase a variety of items, including garments, paintings and photographs, all of which delve into the enduring style of Black men in the context of dandyism.

This exhibition marks a significant step in diversifying the Met’s collections and addressing historical biases in curatorial practices.

Andrew Bolton, the Curator in Charge, emphasized the importance of making fashion at The Met more accessible and inclusive.

“At the vanguard of this revitalisation is a group of extremely talented Black designers who are constantly challenging normative categories of identity,” he said.

“While their styles are both singular and distinctive, what unites them is a reliance on various tropes that are rooted in the tradition of dandyism, and specifically Black dandyism”.

The exhibition will explore how Black individuals transformed from being viewed as luxury items during slavery to becoming autonomous, self-fashioning trendsetters on a global scale.

What dandyism means and historical Context

Dandyism is a cultural and aesthetic movement characterized by an emphasis on refined style, elegance, and individuality, particularly in men’s fashion.

Originating in the late 18th century, dandyism celebrates the art of dressing well and the cultivation of personal identity through clothing.

Dandies often challenge societal norms, using fashion as a means of self-expression and social commentary.

Anna Wintour is once again hosting the big event[/caption]

It served as a powerful form of resistance against oppression, allowing individuals to assert their identity and reclaim agency through their sartorial choices.

Dandyism, as defined by Monica L. Miller, can be understood as “dressing wisely and well”.

She also described black dandyism as “a strategy and a tool to rethink identity, to reimagine the self in a different context. To really push a boundary — especially during the time of enslavement, to really push a boundary on who and what counts as human, even.”

The exhibition will trace the evolution of Black dandyism from Enlightenment-era England to contemporary representations in cities like London and New York.

It is the first time since 2003 that a Costume Institute exhibition will focus solely on menswear.

Additionally, NBA legend LeBron James will serve as an honorary co-chair, marking his first appearance at the Met Gala.

How will bodybuilding be scored at Mr Olympia 2024?

Judges will score competitors according to the ‘total package,’ which is a balance of size, symmetry, and muscularity.

The IFBB Pro League has developed a scoring system based on averages. Typically, seven judges rank the competitors.

However, to achieve what the IFBB deems a fair average, each competitor’s highest and lowest scores are dropped.

In the Mr. Olympia, competitors are ranked from one through 15 and everyone outside of 15th place is in 16th place. The lowest score is equal to the highest ranking in bodybuilding, so the competitor with the lowest overall score wins.

Inflation creeps up again as shoppers forced to pay more for essentials like eggs and meat at the grocery store

NEW inflation numbers reveal consumers are paying more.

Inflation has creeped up by 0.2% in September, according to fresh data by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

September inflation is up by 0.2%[/caption]

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics released the September consumer price index (CPI) on Thursday morning.

Last month, CPI rose by 0.2% on a seasonally adjusted basis, matching the increase seen in July.

The August increase was the smallest 12-month increase since February 2021.

The steady inflation data helped shape the Federal Reserve’s decision to cut rates by an unusually large half-point in September.

‘That’s the end of Travis Kelce’, Kansas City Chiefs make major decision over tight end following bench decision talk

NFL fans are convinced Travis Kelce’s career is “OVER” following a major decision from the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 35-year-old’s future with the Super Bowl 58 winners has been up in the air for several months.

The Chiefs’ re-signing of Jody Forston has convinced some football fans that Kelce’s days are numbered[/caption]

And speculation that he could leave Arrowfield Stadium has ramped up after the Chiefs snapped up a new tight end.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has signed Jody Fortson from their practice squad to the active roster.

And the signing of Forston – which comes a little less than two months after he was cut by the Miami Dolphins – has convinced American football fans that Kelce’s Chiefs days are numbered.

One wrote on X: “Travis Kelce‘s replacement has arrived.”

Another said: “Travis is playing so bad they got to active Jody Fortson.”

And another said: “Travis Kelce’s career is over.”

Another chimed in: “How much help does Patrick Mahomes need?”

Four-time All-Pro star Kelce is hoping to lead the Chiefs to an unprecedented third Vince Lombardi Trophy under Reid this season.

And the beau of music sensation Taylor Swift is staying focused on the task at hand, despite the uncertainty over his future.

When asked how he’d react to being given a diminished role this season, Kelce said: “I probably wouldn’t listen to them if they did.

“You get more comfortable with your body. You learn things from the mistakes you made in years past and things like that.

“You just constantly keep getting better and keep getting more aware of where your body’s at.

“I’m excited. I get to play another year of football [with a] fresh slate.

“Get to kind of prove to ourselves and Chiefs Kingdom that we’re one of the top dogs and we can play at a high level.”

The Chiefs will be back in action on Sunday night, travelling to the Levi’s Stadium to take on the San Francisco 49ers.

Social Security COLA increasing to 2.5% in 2025 – but your age will depend on how much you get

THE SOCIAL Security Administration has made its annual cost-of-living adjustment announcement, giving recipients an idea of how much more money they will receive in 2025.

The predictions made by experts throughout the year have been confirmed as the increase is set to kick in at 2.5%.

Americans will see a significant benefits change in their Social Security checks

A smaller COLA may indicate lower inflation, which could reduce daily living costs
Getty Images - Getty

The Senior Citizens League, a nonpartisan advocacy group for senior citizens, has recently forecast a lower COLA for 2025 compared to the 3.2% increase in 2024.

Their latest prediction suggested a 2.5% COLA, a slight drop from their previous estimate of 2.57% in August.

This 2025 COLA would mean an average increase of $48 per month in Social Security benefits, bringing the average monthly payment to $1,968.

While this is lower than in recent years, it’s still close to the 20-year historical average of 2.6%.

FINANCIAL FEARS

For many beneficiaries, a 2.5% increase might not seem like enough.

However, a lower COLA typically signals that inflation is slowing down, which could lead to a reduction in the cost of daily necessities.

It’s important to remember that the $48 increase is just an average. Individual benefit increases will vary based on factors like the age at which you claim Social Security.

For instance, those who wait until age 70 to file for benefits will receive a larger monthly payment compared to those who apply at 62.

The annual COLA is closely monitored by seniors, as it’s meant to help them keep pace with rising living costs.

In recent years, COLA increases have been as high as 8.7%, but many beneficiaries feel it’s still not enough.

A survey by the Senior Citizens League found that 69% of respondents said their household costs outpaced the COLA, with food and housing costs being the biggest concerns.

FULL RETIREMENT AGE IN A NUTSHELL

Americans can start claiming Social Security retirement benefits as early as age 62, but doing so will result in a reduced monthly payment.

Full benefits are only available once an individual reaches their full retirement age, which varies depending on their birth year.

If they delay taking benefits beyond their full retirement age, up until age 70, their monthly benefit will increase.

WHEN SOCIAL SECURITY PAYMENTS ARE MADE

Social Security payments are issued on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of each month based on the recipient's birthdate:

  • Second Wednesday: For individuals born between the 1st and 10th of the month
  • Third Wednesday: For those born between the 11th and 20th
  • Fourth Wednesday: For those born between the 21st and 31st

For those who claim benefits early, a small percentage is deducted for each month prior to reaching full retirement age.

To understand how much benefits will be reduced if they start at 62, individuals can refer to the following, which factors in their birth year and provides estimates based on a full retirement benefit of $1,000.

Percentages are approximate, according to the SSA.

  • Age: 66
    • Months between age 62 and FRA: 48
    • Benefit reduced by: 25.00%
  • Age 66 and two months
    • Months between age 62 and FRA: 50
    • Benefit reduced by: 25.83%
  • Age 66 and four months
    • Months between age 62 and FRA: 52
    • Benefit reduced by: 26.67%
  • Age 66 and six months
    • Months between age 62 and FRA: 54
    • Benefit reduced by: 27.50%
  • Age 66 and eight months
    • Months between age 62 and FRA: 56
    • Benefit reduced by: 28.33%
  • Age 66 and 10 months
    • Months between age 62 and FRA: 58
    • Benefit reduced by: 29.17%
  • Age 67
    • Months between age 62 and FRA: 60
    • Benefit reduced by: 30.00%

Deciding when to start collecting Social Security benefits comes with both pros and cons.

Taking benefits before reaching full retirement age means individuals will receive payments for a longer period but at a reduced amount.

On the other hand, delaying benefits past the full retirement age allows Americans to earn delayed retirement credits, which increase the monthly payment.

Everyone’s situation is unique, so it’s important to weigh personal factors, like financial needs and health when planning the right time to begin receiving benefits.

Shocking moment female British tourist, 20, is sucker punched by thug in Australia leaving her with broken jaw

THIS is the moment a female Brit tourist was sucker punched by an Aussie thug in front of horrified onlookers – leaving her with a shattered jaw.

Poppy, 20, was on holiday in Australia to celebrate her birthday when a man assaulted her in a”disturbing” attack.

CCTV footage shows the Brit along with her friend walking down a road in Melbourne when a group of men pass them from the opposite side.

One man can be seen waving what appears to be a scarf in Poppy’s face as he walks past her.

Disgusted by the act, Poppy turns and appears to confront the man.

But the thug then reacts violently and instead brutally punches Poppy in the head, forcing her to reel backwards and fall in the middle of the road.

While the Brit woman was able to get up on her feet after the vile attack, she had her jaw fractured and her teeth broken – and had to get titanium plates installed.

Poppy told 7News: “The attack was disgusting … It was vile.

“I don’t understand how someone thinks that’s an okay reaction to have, especially to a young girl.

“I have had stitches from my left ear to my cheek to my mouth. I had to have a wisdom tooth taken out. I have two titanium plates [placed on my jaw].”

“I really hope he comes forward, or I really hope his friends push him to come forward. I think that’s just the morally right thing to do.”

It is understood the man who attacked Poppy eventually presented himself to Victoria police, but he has not been charged as of now.

A senior Aussie cop told Channel 9: “The footage is pretty horrific … its disgusting to see.

“Any person should be able to go out on a Saturday night and enjoy their time. Especially being a 19-year-old female in the company of just her friends

Poppy, who turned 20 on October 1, revealed she had to delay her planned trip to Australia’s east coast with friends because of the “vile” attack.

“I’ve had to put all of that on hold, and at the time, I didn’t know if it was going to cost me anything either,’ she said.

“[My parents] were really worried, and they were quite scared for me as well.”

The investigation into the case is ongoing.

It comes after an Aussie tourist died after smashing his head on the pavement from his Brit friend throwing a fatal punch.

The 58-year-old had been drinking beer with the Brit, 29, when they had a drunken row in front of their hotel in Pattaya, Thailand, before dawn.

The pair sparked panic as they came to blows in the street on September 27 as terrified locals watched.

The Brit reportedly threw a punch that caused the Aussie to smash his head on the pavement.

Medics were called to the scene at around 4.30am, where they found the Australian man on the ground with no pulse.

They performed CPR and rushed him to the Pattaya Memorial Hospital, but they said he could not be revived.

Roger Federer’s tribute to Rafael Nadal is as classy as you’d expect as he hails legendary tennis rival after he retires

ROGER FEDERER said he “hoped this day would never come” after Rafael Nadal announced his retirement from tennis.

Nadal, 38, called time on his incredible 22-Major, 23-year career on Thursday morning.

He released an emotional five-minute video on social media where he explained his decision, revealed he would bow out at next month’s Davis Cup finals and thanked his family, friends and fans.

Nadal also gave a special nod to his “great rivals” – none more so than Federer and Novak Djokovic, with whom he has shared the greatest era in tennis history.

And the Swiss great was one of the first big names to comment on Nadal’s post.

Federer replied: “What a career, Rafa!

“I always hoped this day would never come.

“Thank you for the unforgettable memories and all your incredible achievements in the game we love.

“It’s been an absolute honour!”

Although Federer made a name for himself first, the majority of his career is intertwined with Nadal’s.

They faced off 40 times, including in nine Grand Slam finals.

Nadal won the head-to-head record 24-16 – with arguably the most famous victory coming in 2008.

After defeat in the 2006 and 2007 Wimbledon finals, Nadal finally got his hands on the famous golden trophy.

It was virtually dark when he collapsed to the turf after completing a 6-4 6-4 6-7 6-7 9-7 win in four hours and 48 minutes on Centre Court.

Their thrilling rivalry concluded in 2019 when Federer came out on top in their Wimbledon semi-final.

Despite battling it out at the very top of tennis for just about two decades – along with Novak Djokovic who surpassed them both to 24 MajorsNadal and Federer forged a unique friendship.

And in 2022 when Federer retired, he asked Nadal to play doubles with him in his final professional match at the Laver Cup.

Following the match – which incidentally they lost to American pair Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe – the pair held hands in tears as tributes were made to the departing Federer.

Nadal said in 2022: “Due to our contrasting styles and personalities, due to affinity, in some way we have shared so much.

“Someone I have admired, who I have rivalled and also I have shared many beautiful things on and off the court was leaving.

“In that sense, all those moments, those feelings you have before playing a final of a Grand Slam, of an important tournament, everything that was in the air before those matches. It was different from other matches.

“You know you’re not going to live that again and a part of my life left with him [when he retired].

rafa nadal is one of three men to have won career gold medals ( including olympics )

“It was also the emotion of saying goodbye to someone who has been so important to our sport.”

There were suggestions Nadal may also have bid farewell at the Laver Cup but he has decided to bow out in front of a home crowd in Malaga – and he hopes with a fifth Davis Cup triumph to his name.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist won a staggering 14 French Opens, four US Opens and a pair of titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

In his video, Nadal said: “I think it’s the appropriate time to put an end to a career that has been long and much more successful than I could have ever imagined.

“But I am very excited that my last tournament will be the final of the Davis Cup and representing my country.

“I think I’ve come full circle, since one of my first great joys as a professional tennis player was the Davis Cup final in Sevilla in 2004.

“I feel super, super lucky for all the things I’ve been able to experience. I want to thank the entire tennis industry.

“All the people involved in this sport: my long-term colleagues, especially my great rivals.

“I have spent many, many hours with them, and I have lived many moments that I will remember for the rest of my life.”

As well as Federer, plenty of others also chipped in with heartfelt responses.

Nick Kyrgios said: “We had our differences but you were one hell of a warrior. Best wishes and good luck with whatever comes next.”

Coco Gauff added: “You are amazing! It’s been so incredible to witness your greatness and work ethic and be able to learn from it. Wishing you all the best in the next chapter.”

Katie Boulter joked: “Nope, I/we refuse this application to retire.”

Darren Cahill wrote: “Possessed every quality in an athlete that you want for your own kids to try and emulate. Kindness, respect, hard-working, loyal, generous, belief and a willingness to fight for every single point. A role model. An inspiration to every generation and all-time legend. Well done, Rafa.”

TennisTV replied: “Legend then. Legend now. Legend forever.”

And the French Open simply replied: “King.”

Rafael Nadal's farewell video in full

RAFAEL NADAL announced his retirement from professional tennis at the end of the 2024 season.

He released an emotional, five-minute video confirming his decision to hang up his racquets after 23 years on the ATP Tour and 22 Grand Slam titles.

Here’s what he said…

Hello everyone, I’m here to let you know that I am retiring from professional tennis.

The reality is that it has been some difficult years, these last two especially.

I don’t think I have been able to play without limitations.

It is obviously a difficult decision, one that has taken me some time to make.

But in this life, everything has a beginning and an end.

And I think it’s the appropriate time to put an end to a career that has been long and much more successful than I could have ever imagined.

But I am very excited that my last tournament will be the final of the Davis Cup and representing my country.

I think I’ve come full circle, since one of my first great joys as a professional tennis player was the Davis Cup final in Sevilla in 2004.

I feel super, super lucky for all the things I’ve been able to experience. I want to thank the entire tennis industry.

All the people involved in this sport: my long-term colleagues, especially my great rivals.

I have spent many, many hours with them, and I have lived many moments that I will remember for the rest of my life.

Talking about my team is a little bit more difficult for me because in the end my team has been a very important part of my life.

They are not just co-workers, they are friends.

They have been by my side at all the times I have really needed them.

Very bad moments. Very good moments. Moments when I had to be pushed. Moments they gave me more slack.

We have lived so much together that it is hard to explain.

My family is everything to me.

My mother. I think she has made all the sacrifices she had to make so that we would always have everything.

My wife, Mery, we’ve been together for 19 years. Thank you for everything you have done.

I think you’ve been the perfect travel companion during all these years of (my) career.

To come home and see how my son is growing every day has been a force that has really kept me alive and with the necessary energy to continue.

My sister, I think we have always had an incredible relationship.

My uncle, who is the reason I started playing tennis.

I believe that thanks to him, I have also been able to overcome many situations that have been difficult in my sporting career.

And to my father, who I believe has been a source of inspiration for me in every sense of the word.

I think he has been an example of effort, of overcoming.

Many, many thanks to my father in a very, very special way.

And finally, you, the fans.

I can’t thank you enough for what you have made me feel.

You have given me the energy I have needed at every moment.

Really, everything I have experienced has been a dream come true.

I leave with the absolute peace of mind of having given my best, of having made an effort in every way.

I can only end by saying a thousand thanks to all and see you soon.

Filly appeared in a Perth court for the first time today and was bailed for $100,000AUD (£51,000) and banned from leaving the state.

The rapper must also report to Perth Police Station in Northbridge every day.

The prosecution told the court “across her body is a history of violent acts” and “the allegation is a consensual issue”.

Filly’s defence lawyer argued the victim was drunk, Channel 9 reported.

The alleged attack happened on September 28 after he had performed a show on the 27th.

Filly was then arrested in Brisbane on Tuesday and sent across the country to Perth on Wednesday for the hearing.

Footage showed Filly being escorted through Perth airport with his hands cuffed in front of him on Wednesday flanked by two officials.

Further footage shows the influencer – who landed his own BBC show called Hot Property in 2019 – being placed in the back of a car.

He was in Australia for a music tour – with the alleged rape happening after a performance at Bar1 Nightclub in northern Perth.

Filly kicked off his Australia tour in Perth before heading to Melbourne, Sydney and the Gold Coast, where he played four shows.

He had performed at Havana Nightclub on the Gold Coast two days before his arrest.

Detectives from Western Australia Police’s sexual assault squad charged Filly with four counts of sexual penetration without consent.

They also arrested him on three counts of assault and one count of impede a person’s normal breathing or circulation by applying pressure to their neck.

Footage of the rapper performing at Perth’s Bar1 Nightclub was posted to TikTok by the venue.

YUNG Filly’s rise to fame saw him start out as a social media star.

The influencer got his big break on YouTube before moving into mainstream TV.

Although he goes by Yung Filly, his real name is Andres Felipé Barrientos.

He was born on August 6, 1995, and moved to the UK from Colombia when he was two years old.

Filly then relocated to southeast London during his childhood.

When asked what it was like growing up in the capital, he told Indy100: “I come from the bottom of the barrel…and that’s why I’m so grateful for the position I’m in now.

“My mum definitely shaped me with the lessons she taught me.

“She’s a single mum with three kids, my dad was a s*** dad so she just had to make it happen.

“She did loads of cleaning jobs. My mum worked at Poundland at the time I had some mad BBC series…just getting my mum out of the position she was in was just the biggest motivation.”

Filly is best known for being a member of the comedy group known as The Wall of Comedy.

He is affiliated with fellow YouTuber Chunkz and the pair have collaborated on many videos and tracks.

Over the years, Filly has also taken part in The Sidemen‘s Charity Football Match, organised by members Josh Bradley, Simon Minter, Tobi Brown, KSI, Ethan Payne, Vikram Barn and Harry Lewis.
