I had trials with Tottenham and was desperate to be a footballer – now I’m one of England’s best in different sport

He has fast-become one of the biggest names in English rugby.

But things could have been very different had he made it in his preferred sport, football.

Speaking on The Stomping Ground, he said: “Growing up I always wanted to be a footballer. My mum was always pushing it to me – the money is a lot better in footballer.”

He continued: “When I moved to England when I was 13 I went to Brighton College down in Sussex.

“That school is predominantly rugby and cricket and growing up my dad always preferred rugby.

“I was still adamant I wanted to be a footballer and then at 14 or 15 I had a trial at Tottenham. I didn’t get in and I remember crying.”

Smith played all six of England’s World Cup matches last year, scoring two tries.

Steve Borthwick’s side reached the semi-finals before losing 16-15 to South Africa.

Watch moment sick passengers are airlifted off stranded cruise ship off Florida coast as Hurricane Milton barrels in

WATCH the moment sick passengers are airlifted from a stranded cruise ship off the coast of Florida.

Hurricane Milton is barrelling down on the state causing millions to evacuate and preventing the holiday vessel from docking.

Sick passengers were airlifted via helicopter from the Sun Princess cruise ship yesterday – which had left Southampton 16 days ago.

The storm was heading directly for the ship which was due to dock in Fort Lauderdale, north of Miami, this morning.

But due to the incoming hurricane, the dock is closed and the Sun Princess was stranded at sea.

The boat has since turned south and is now just north of Cuba, according to CruiseMapper, as it seeks to avoid the monster storm.

Around 6,000 people can be on board the Princess Cruises-operated ship which only began sailing this year.

Hurricane Milton is set to smash Florida within hours bringing with it 160mph wind and 15ft storm surges.

It has already forced 5.5million to evacuate largely through the centre of the state.

Milton is currently 405 miles southwest of Tampa and is expected to cross the Gulf and hit the west of the state on Wednesday night.

The hurricane has brought the state’s tourism industry to its knees with cruise ships not able to dock, evacuation orders, and cancelled flights.

Disney World and Universal Studios in Orlando are also set to close in preparation for the storm.

Airlines including TUI, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have cancelled flights into the state as most of the airports are already closed.

Orlando Airport has stopped all operations today with Tampa airport closing at 9am yesterday.

St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport is being transformed into a mandatory evacuation zone after the final flight leaves today.

Ticket prices have also soared with American Airlines and Delta Air Lines increasing the costs of the final few seats by hundred of dollars.

It comes as…

Tampa’s mayor has warned those who want to stay in the city that they will die.

Jane Castor told CNN: “I can say this without any dramatization whatsoever: if you choose to stay in one of those evacuation areas, you are going to die.

“This is something that I have never seen in my life, and anyone who was born and raised in the Tampa Bay area has never seen this before.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the hurricane as a “monster” and warned the damage will be “significant”.

While US President Joe Biden said those staying in their homes were facing “a matter of life and death”.

He said: “This could be the worst storm to hit Florida in over a century, and God willing, it won’t be, but that’s what it’s looking like right now.”

The government of the Bahamas has also issued a tropical storm warning for the northwestern areas of the island.

Scary footage shows scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) being thrown around the flight.

The aircraft named “Miss Piggy” was collecting data on the hurricane heading towards Tampa on Tuesday morning when the footage was captured.

The fearless boffins bump around the cabin and documents are thrown around as the men are forced to hang on.

Princess Cruises have been approached for comment.

What is a hurricane and how do they form?

A HURRICANE is another name for a tropical cyclone - a powerful storm that forms over warm ocean waters near the equator.

Those arising in the Atlantic or eastern Pacific are called hurricanes, while those in the western Pacific and Indian Ocean are dubbed typhoons or cyclones.

North of the equator they spin anticlockwise because of the rotation of the Earth, however, they turn the opposite way in the southern hemisphere.

Cyclones are like giant weather engines fuelled by water vapor as it evaporates from the sea.

Warm, moist air rises away from the surface, creating a low-pressure system that sucks in air from surrounding areas – which in turn is warmed by the ocean.

As the vapour rises it cools and condenses into swirling bands of cumulonimbus storm clouds.

The system grows and spins faster, sucking in more air and feeding off the energy in seawater that has been warmed by the sun.

At the center, a calm “eye” of the storm is created where cooled air sinks towards the ultra-low pressure zone below, surrounded by spiraling winds of warm air rising.

The faster the wind, the lower the air pressure at the center, and the storm grows stronger and stronger.

Tropical cyclones usually weaken when they hit land as they are no longer fed by evaporation from the warm sea.

But they often move far inland – dumping vast amounts of rain and causing devastating wind damage – before the “fuel” runs out and the storm peters out.

Hurricanes can also cause storm surges when the low air pressure sucks the sea level higher than normal, swamping low-lying coasts.

Wimbledon will never look the same as tennis championship DITCHES line judges for first time in 147-year history

WIMBLEDON are set to ditch line judges for the first time in its 147-year history.

And that will mean the Championships will never look the same again.

PA:Press Association
Wimbledon are set to replace line judges with Hawk-Eye Live[/caption]

Tennis fans know Wimbledon is synonymous with the men and women calling “fault”, decked out in their expensive Ralph Lauren outfits.

And although the Hawk-Eye challenge system has been used at the tournament since 2007, the decision has been made to fully replace the line judges with AI.

It is understood the All England Club were reluctant to make the switch from people around the lawns to electronic line calling (ELC).

However, the 300 officials will now be sidelined with the automatic Hawk-Eye Live system taking over across all 18 tournament courts including Centre Court.

Hawk-Eye Live was first used for a Grand Slam during the 2020 US Open at the height of the pandemic.

It means the razor-sharp cameras pick up when shots land out and automatically trigger an “out” call over the PA tannoy system.

ELC is deemed to be the most accurate way of ensuring line calls are consistent – rather than having humans make the judgement which players can challenge up to three times incorrectly in a set.

The Hawk-Eye Live format, though, is much quicker and eliminates the need to challenge – because the tech is used in real time, a tenth of a second to be precise.

The reaction to the move is likely to be split.

Fans adore the tradition of Wimbledon and this change feels like a key part of the furniture being ripped away.

But the players will no doubt appreciate the transition, especially because the men’s ATP Tour is upgrading to ELC for all its events from the 2025 season.

Philadelphia Eagles brutally CUT Super Bowl winner without him even playing a snap after signing $4million deal

DEVIN WHITE has been brutally cut by the Philadelphia Eagles without playing a snap.

The Super Bowl winner signed a one-year deal worth $4million with the Eagles during the off-season.

He had been a free agent following five seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

However, the linebacker failed to force himself into starting contention for his new team.

Instead, he missed out on a starting spot to Nakobe Dean and Zack Baun for Nick Sirianni’s side.

As a result, White did not play a single snap across the Eagles’ opening four games of the season.

He also struggled with an ankle injury, which ruled him out of their opener against the Green Bay Packers in Brazil.

Meanwhile, he missed Sunday’s 33-16 loss to the Buccaneers due to personal reasons.

That defeat leaves the Eagles 2-2 for the season ahead of this weekend’s clash with the Cleveland Browns.

The Eagles confirmed they reached a deal with White to allow him to leave before the trade deadline.

White was the fifth overall pick in the 2019 draft by the Buccaneers and spent five seasons with the franchise.

During that time he won Super Bowl LV in 2021, making the game-winning interception on Patrick Mahomes.

He also made the Pro Bowl in 2022 and holds a number of franchise records in Tampa.

Amongst them are most forced fumbles in a single game as well as the most recovered by a rookie in a season.

Apple declares millions of gadgets ‘obsolete’ as popular iPhone and iPad models are added to doomed list

APPLE has added a number of popular gadgets onto its doomed “obsolete” and “vintage” list of dying devices.

Owning and using one of the products in question can be a real headache, so those affected might want to consider upgrading now.

The move also spells the end for iPod Nanos
Apple

The tech giant routinely adds older kit onto the two lists after so many years.

Apple declares a gadget “vintage” five years after it was last distributed for sale.

And after seven years, it moves to the dreaded “obsolete” list.

This is a particular problem because all hardware services are discontinued and replacement parts can’t be ordered either, making it near impossible to repair damages.

In the latest update to the lists, a number of iPhone, iPad, Mac and iPod models have been added.

Where iPods are concerned, it means the final farewell for two models: the iPod Nano and the iPod Shuffle.

For iPhone, it’s goodbye for the main iPhone 6 – the larger iPhone 6 Plus was made obsolete back in April.

See the full list of obsolete products added to the list below.

  • iPhone 6
  • iPod Nano (7th generation)
  • iPod Shuffle (4th generation)

As for the vintage list, it’s nearing the end of the line for one iPad model and one MacBook.

This includes the base iPad, sixth generation, which was released in 2018.

And the MacBook that’s considered vintage is the 12-inch 2017 version.

Here is the full list of obsolete iPhones you need to be aware of:

  • iPhone
  • iPhone 3G (China mainland) 8GB
  • iPhone 3G 8GB, 16GB
  • iPhone 3GS (China mainland) 16GB, 32GB
  • iPhone 3GS (8GB)
  • iPhone 3GS 16GB, 32GB
  • iPhone 4 CDMA

  • iPhone 4 16GB, 32GB
  • iPhone 4 GSM (8GB), Black
  • iPhone 4S
  • iPhone 4S (8GB)
  • iPhone 5C
  • iPhone 5S
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus
  • iPhone 6s (32GB)
  • iPhone 6s Plus (32GB)

And here is the full list of “vintage” iPhones to be aware of:

  • iPhone 4 (8GB)
  • iPhone 5
  • iPhone SE
  • iPhone 8 Red
  • iPhone 8 Plus Red
  • iPhone X

Time to upgrade?

Analysis by Jamie Harris, Assistant Technology and Science Editor at The Sun

The gadgets listed above have all long been discontinued so you can no longer buy them.

Due to their age, they won’t be eligible for free iOS upgrades either.

Given these include important security updates, you should have already moved on to keep the contents of your phone safe.

It’s annoying to have to buy a new smartphone – especially when they don’t come cheap – but now you won’t even be able to get it repaired.

The safest option is to upgrade to a newer handset.

Breakthrough new ‘exercise pill’ mimics benefits of high-speed 10km run without ever leaving the sofa, scientists say

A BREAKTHROUGH new pill could mimic the health benefits of running – but you don’t even have to leave the sofa.

Scientists at Aarhus University in Denmark developed a drug that they claim can replicate the impact of jogging at high speed for 10 kilometres.

The pill contains a molecule called LaKe that can mimic the effect of exercise on the body’s metabolism after fasting – the practice of abstaining from food or drink for a period of time.

Exercise and skipping meals can make your heart stronger and reduces fat levels in the blood, researchers said.

Working out helps to increase levels of lactates and ketones in the body, chemicals which our body’s cells use for fuel.

This in turn can increase the production of appetite-suppressing hormones while bringing down levels of fat in the blood.

LaKe contains a chemical fusion of of lactate and ketones.

Prof Thomas Poulsen, from the Department of Chemistry at Aarhus University, said: “We’ve developed a molecule that can mimic the body’s natural metabolic response to strenuous exercise and fasting.

“In practice, the molecule brings the body into a metabolic state corresponding to running 10 kilometers at high speed on an empty stomach,” he explained.

“When lactate and ketone levels in the blood increase, the production of an appetite-suppressing hormone increases and the level of free fatty acids in the blood decreases.

“This has a number of health benefits, for example reducing the risk of developing metabolic syndrome.”

According to the professor, it’s not possible to achieve the same effect through diet alone, since lactate and ketones can’t be consumed in high enough quantities without the buildup undesirable by-products such as acid and salt.

This is where LaKe comes in, as the pill contains lactate and ketones without the harmful add ons.

Prof Poulsen said: “We have now created a molecule which allows us to artificially control the amounts of lactate and ketones safely.”

So far, the pill has only been tested on rats.

But the first clinical trials in humans are now underway at Aarhus University Hospital.

According to Prof Poulsen, the trials could pave the way for the molecule to become a nutritional supplement if they’re successful.

Scientists behind the study – published in the scientific journal: Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry – said people who can’t follow a strict exercise and diet plan might find it helpful.

Dr Thomas Poulsen, a chemist at Aarhus University who led the research, said: “It can be difficult to maintain motivation to run many kilometers at high speed and go without food.

“For people with physical ailments, such as a weak heart or general weakness, a nutritional supplement can be the key to better recovery.”

According to the researchers, LaKe also has potential to ease struggles with concentration and may even be used in the treatment of serious diseases such as Parkinson’s and dementia.

These diseases are often characterised by low energy levels in the brain, which inhibit its optimal functioning, he explained.

Prof Poulsen said: “Because lactate can take over the role of glucose in the brain under stressful or traumatic conditions, there have been experiments to increase lactate levels in people with concussion.

“Patients who cannot perform strenuous exercise will benefit greatly from a drug that can boost these levels.”

Moment iconic Las Vegas Tropicana hotel implodes and is reduced to rubble in 22 seconds – months after closing doors

DRAMATIC footage has captured the moment the iconic Tropicana hotel in Las Vegas imploded and collapsed into a pile of rubble.

The so-called Tiffany of the Strip, which featured in the James Bond movie Diamonds Are Forever and the 1972 blockbuster The Godfather, came crashing down in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The Tropicana Hotel was part of the Las Vegas strip for seven decades[/caption]

The implosion occurred just months after the hotel closed its doors to the public, ending 67 years of history.

Before the towers crashed, an impressive fireworks and drone show dazzled the Nevada skyline.

Before the blast, an impressive seven-minute show featuring 500 drones and over a hundred pyro drones was held.

There was a nod to Las Vegas’ rich gambling history in the show, and a projection of the famous Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign appeared on the screen.

The drone show also featured a tribute to the Oakland A’s—a nod to the team that will play at the new state-of-the-art baseball stadium worth $1.5 billion that will be constructed on the hotel‘s site.

At least 2,000 pounds of explosives were used to carry out the implosion.

The Paradise Tower came down first, followed by the 23-story Club Tower.

Officials said it would take 22 seconds for both towers to come crashing down after the order was given.

Dynamite was put inside the Club Tower ahead of the implosion.

But a charge was used to help bring the Paradise Tower down.

This was because the structure was made of steel.

Mark Loizeaux, the president and owner of Controlled Demolition Inc., revealed that one tower would fall, and the second would crumple.

“In a concrete structure like the club tower, we’re dealing with sticks of dynamite like you would see in the cartoons,” he told the ABC affiliate KTNV-TV.

Teams who helped prepare for the explosion admitted they were unprepared to see the hotel come crashing down.

“When I see the lot completely gone, it’s going to be very, very sad,” Debby Lamm said.

She revealed she first visited the hotel in 1981 and had stayed there another 10 times.

The implosion is the first such event that Las Vegas has seen in almost a decade.

In 2016, the final tower of the Riviera Hotel, also located on the famous Strip, was leveled.

The only standing Las Vegas strip resort from the 1950s remains the Sahara.

Tourists booked rooms in advance and bought gas masks and hazmat suits, per the Fox affiliate KLAS-TV.

Anna Otero told the network she booked a hotel room across the road from the Tropicana around four months ago.

“We were going to make the date come up here to come see it,” she said.

Tourists said they flocked from California and Tennessee to see the event.

“It’s something we’re all going to remember,” Corey Brady told the ABC affiliate KTNV-TV.

“We’re going to go as close as we can get,” Dakota Baldwin, also from Tennessee, said.

Cops closed roads along the Las Vegas strip in the hours before the event.

An exclusion zone was also set up ahead of the event.

The Tropicana opened its doors in April 1957 and it’s estimated that more than 12,500 flocked to the casino resort for its grand opening.

It cost an estimated $15 million to build, and it was the most expensive resort in Vegas at the time.

The hotel was known for its mosaic tiles and its mahogany panels, and its lobby featured a towering tulip-shaped fountain.

A local press report said the Tropicana was built as a “resort hotel” rather than a casino.

A RICH HISTORY

The hotel had a rich history, with A-listers, including Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and the famous magicians Siegfried and Roy, all taking the stage.

And the resort also made appearances in hit movies like The Godfather and Diamonds Are Forever.

In the Bond classic, Agent 007 famously said: “I hear that the Hotel Tropicana is quite comfortable.”

The iconic hotel was Michael Corleone’s casino business in the first Godfather movie.

In The Godfather Part II, the hotel name was switched to the Tropigala because of copyright issues.

The resort also appeared in Elvis Presley’s 1964 movie Viva Las Vegas.

The singer Gladys Knight and Wayne Newton, who was known as Mr. Las Vegas, even had residencies at the resort.

The Tropicana faced challenges throughout the history.

During the 1970s, resorts such as Caesar’s Palace and Las Vegas Hilton opened.

Hotel chiefs scrambled to ensure the resort remained relevant, and it underwent a $70 million revamp.

Throughout the decades, ownership changed hands, and the hotel was bought by Bally’s Corporation in 2022.

But the hotel closed its doors for the final time in April 2024.

“Our team felt that this was the right time, post the peak season, to prepare to close the Trop,” the company chairman Soo Kim said.

“It’s been in the works for some time.”

Fred Doumani, who owned the hotel between 1974 and 1979, said the implosion marks the end of an era.

“There are no more original hotels to be knocked down, really,” he said.

Once the land has been cleared, construction on the new baseball stadium will begin.

The Oakland A’s team is expected to move in ahead of the 2028 season.

The new arena will be able to seat around 33,000 fans at full capacity.

‘It’s a load of b*****ks,’ fumes Gary Anderson as he rants at lack of ‘respect’ for world’s top darts player

GARY ANDERSON has launched a passionate X-rated defence of world darts number one Luke Humphries.

Anderson, 53, has claimed that Humphries doesn’t get the attention he deserves despite being the best darts player around at the moment.

Anderson reckons Humphries doesn’t get the attention and respect he deserves for his sensational success in recent times[/caption]

Humphries has had an exceptional 12 months, rising to the top of the PDC Order of Merit and adding the World Championship and World Cup of Darts to an already glittering CV.

And Anderson reckons that the 29-year-old is often overlooked by many despite earning his spot on top of the pile.

The Scot, who is currently in Leicester fighting for the World Grand Prix title, fumed in his press conference this week.

He ranted: “It’s not just being world champion, what has Luke won over the past two years?

“This is the thing, he has won just about everything since this last year. He’s not just world champion, he’s there for a reason.

“World champion was added onto his CV, he’s won so much more.

“And the boy gets overlooked every time, which I think is a load of b******s.

“He’s deserved everything that he’s worked for, everything he’s got. And talk to the other players [they feel the same]. Rubbish, absolute rubbish.

“Just a little respect, it’s always other people. But Luke goes on you go.

“As long as they’re talking about other people, the limelight’s off of him so he can just carry on what he does. He’s handling it well but deep down he must be cheesed off.”

Fans have agreed with Anderson’s sentiment, suggesting that some of the other players are often prioritised over Humphries despite his success.

On social media one fan wrote: “Littler and MVG are all the pundits faun about so Gary Anderson is spot on”.

While another added: “Well said Gary. Luke Humphries never gets the recognition he deserves for being the world darts champion.”

Anderson was full of praise for his other colleagues too, gushing about his excitement for what’s to come in darts.

He added: “You’ve got Luke Humphries [who is the] best player in the world no doubt. Should do a bit more interviews with Luke because he deserves it.

“What he has won over the last 12-18 months, he deserves it. Luke Littler‘s coming through firing all guns.

“You’ve got Mike de Decker cracking player. Darts is going to be a funny place in the next couple of years.”

Humphries and Anderson have both booked their spot in World Grand Prix last 16 with their matches set to take place over the next few days.

Cool Hand Luke takes on world no.32 Ricardo Pietreczko, while Anderson will face Mike de Decker after showering him with praise.
