Salmon coin TRIPLES in value after being named rarest 50p beating Kew Garden – details to spot if yours is valuable

A NEW King Charles III coin has tripled in value after being crowned the rarest 50p in circulation, beating the Kew Garden design.

The rare coins market has been shaken up by the newcomer, with collectors scrambling to get their hands on the newly crowned rarity.

Undated handout photo issued by the Royal Mint of 50p coins depicting the Atlantic Salmon and bearing the King's portrait, it is the rarest such coin in circulation, the Royal Mint has confirmed. The coin has knocked the "highly collectable" 2009 Kew Gardens 50p off the top spot for the first time in 15 years, the official maker of British coins said. Issue date: Monday October 7, 2024. The Atlantic Salmon 50p has been crowned the rarest 50p in circulation

The Sun exclusively revealed this week that the Atlantic Salmon has taken the top spot as the rarest 50p coin in UK circulation.

Previously the title was held by the famous Kew Gardens design, which features the site’s iconic Chinese Pagoda and displays the years 1759 and 2009.

The new coin, which is one of the first released featuring King Charles’ face, features an engraving of salmon fish jumping out of Atlantic ocean water on the other side.

The value of the Salmon coin has since skyrocketed after the Royal Mint revealed to The Sun how few of the them have gone in to circulation.

According to Changechecker, the piece, initially worth around £50, has shot up to £150 in the secondary market, with prices expected to rise further.

A Changechecker spokesperson said: “The circulation 2023 Salmon 50p has knocked the legendary Kew Gardens 50p off the top spot, meaning Britain has a new rarest 50p for the first time in 15 years.

“It was announced on October 7, 2024 that just 200,000 2023 Salmon 50ps entered circulation in November 2023.

“Due to it’s incredibly low mintage, just one in 335 people in the UK could have the chance of finding one in their change.

“When the Kew Gardens 50p was first issued in 2009, collectors didn’t initially realise just how rare it would be, and many people who found one in their change parted with it and later kicked themselves.

“Now, 15 years later, the Kew Gardens coin regularly sells for between £150 to £250 on the secondary market, so it’s no surprise that they’re already selling on the secondary market for up to £200.

“For many, snagging a Salmon coin could be a second chance at coin-collecting glory.

“In terms of identifying rare coins, we would urge collectors to check mintage figures as well as keep up to date with our Scarcity Index which is updated quarterly.”

Eager collectors are rushing to secure one before values spiral even higher.

Coins have already fetched high bids on eBay, with one coin selling for £164 on October 7.

Another listing currently sits at £185, and yet another is asking for a staggering £500 as demand surges – though there’s no guarantee that these will sell for that much.

A coin is only ever worth what someone else is willing to pay at the time.

The Royal Mint confirmed that 200,000 Atlantic Salmon coins were distributed to banks and post offices late last year, as part of a commemorative series marking the ascension of King Charles III.

This figure beats the 210,000 Kew Gardens coins minted 15 years ago, making the Atlantic Salmon officially the rarest 50p in circulation.

Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coins at The Royal Mint said: “The releasing of mintage figures is an eagerly anticipated event among the coin collecting community.

“This year is particularly exciting as we reveal the Atlantic Salmon as the rarest 50p in circulation.”

As the Atlantic Salmon swims to the top of the rarest 50p list, the Kew Gardens coin drops to second place, followed by other valuable pieces such as the Olympic Football and Olympic Wrestling coins.

Top ten rarest 50p list

The updated top ten now includes:

  1. 2023 Atlantic Salmon – 200,000 made
  2. 2009 Kew Gardens – 210,000 minted
  3. 2011 Olympic Football – 1,125,000 minted
  4. 2011 Olympic Wrestling – 1,129,500 minted
  5. 2011 Olympic Judo – 1,161,500 minted
  6. 2011 Olympic Triathlon – 1,163,500 minted
  7. 2018 Peter Rabbit – 1,400,000 minted
  8. 2018 Flopsy Bunny – 1,400,000 minted
  9. 2011 Olympic Tennis – 1,454,000 minted
  10. 2011 Olympic Goalball – 1,615,000 minted

Rare coins, especially those with low mintages, can fetch hundreds, even thousands of pounds.

Error coins, produced with manufacturing mistakes, are also highly sought after by collectors.

Some have been known to sell for as much as £1,500 to £2,500.

How to sell a rare coin

There are three ways you can sell rare coins – on eBayFacebook, or in an auction.

If you’re selling on Facebook, there are risks attached.

Some sellers have previously been targeted by scammers who say they want to buy a rare note or coin and ask for money up front to pay for a courier to pick it up.

But the courier is never actually sent and you’re left out of pocket.

Rather than doing this, it’s always best to meet a Facebook seller in person when buying or selling a rare note or coin.

Ensure it’s a public meeting spot that’s in a well-lit area and if you can, avoid using payment links.

Next, you can sell at auction, which is generally the safest option.

You can organise this with The Royal Mint’s Collectors Service.

It has a team of experts who can help you authenticate and value your coin.

You can get in touch via email and a member of the valuation team will get back to you.

You will be charged for the service though – the cost varies depending on the size of your collection.

You can also sell rare coins on eBay.

But always bear in mind, you will only make what the buyer is willing to pay at that time.

You can search for the same note or coin as you have to see how much the same one has sold for on the website previously.

This can help give you an indication of how much you should sell it for.

Meanwhile, it’s not just 50ps that could land you a small fortune.

A coin expert has revealed the tiny clue on the edge of a £1 coin could make it worth 2500 times its face value.

Elsewhere, one lucky collector scored a hefty £30,000 on his coin because of an unusual design.

How to spot valuable items

COMMENTS by Consumer Editor, Alice Grahns:

It’s easy to check if items in your attic are valuable.

As a first step, go on eBay to check what other similar pieces, if not the same, have sold for recently.

Simply search for your item, filter by “sold listings” and toggle by the highest value.

This will give you an idea of how much others are willing to pay for it.

The method can be used for everything ranging from rare coins and notes to stamps, old toys, books and vinyl records – just to mention a few examples.

For coins, online tools from change experts like Coin Hunter are also helpful to see how much it could be worth.

Plus, you can refer to Change Checker’s latest scarcity index update to see which coins are topping the charts.

For especially valuable items, you may want to enlist the help of experts or auction houses.

Do your research first though and be aware of any fees for evaluating your stuff.

As a rule of thumb, rarity and condition are key factors in determining the value of any item.

You’re never guaranteed to make a mint, however.

Honda recalls 1.7million cars over deadly issue – warning signs to look out for from strange noises to ‘sticky’ steering

HONDA has been forced to recall 1.7 million cars over a potentially deadly issue.

Drivers have been urged to look out for some key warning signs, including unusual noises and “sticky” steering.

Getty
Honda has recalled 1.7 million vehicles over a potentially deadly steering issue[/caption]

The recall was announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in conjunction with the manufacturer.

According to the notice, certain Hondas can suffer from steering issues as a result of damage to the gearbox.

It explained: “The steering gearbox assembly may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can cause excessive internal friction and lead to difficulty steering the vehicle.”

The agency suggested that this could increase the risk of a crash in affected models.

A total of 28 model variants are believed to be impacted, amounting to as many as 1.7 million vehicles on US roads.

How can I check if my car is part of a recall?

If you own a car that's been recently recalled, you can easily check your VIN.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) makes it incredibly quick and easy for drivers to check and see if their vehicle is part of a recent (or past) recall.

The VIN checking tool also allows drivers to see whether or not the repair was completed within the last 15 years, making it an incredible tool for buyers of used cars.

All recalls initiated by the NHTSA mean free repairs for drivers, even if it’s an engine or a transmission replacement. If your VIN shows an active recall that has not been repaired, it’s important to make an appointment at your nearest dealership.

Here’s how to make an appointment for a recall:

  1. Look up your VIN using the NHTSA tool.
  2. Find out the recall number/ID from the manufacturer.
  3. Call your nearest dealership’s service center with the ID number handy, and mention you’d like to schedule an appointment to repair the recall. The repair can only be done at a dealership, as they’re authorized by the manufacturer to conduct the repair free of cost using genuine parts.
  4. Try to make the appointment as soon as possible.
  5. Once the repair is completed, the dealership will update the information associated with the VIN to reflect it’s been completed.

Source: NHTSA

Drivers have been advised to listen out for unusual noises coming from the gearbox or a “sticky” steering column leading to difficulty turning.

You can check if you car might be affected on the NHTSA website or by calling Honda customer service on 1-888-234-2138 and quoting recall numbers SJS, MJU, QJT and VJV.

Honda will also be sending letters to potentially affected motorists by November 18.

If the issue is found to be present, you can take the car into the nearest Honda dealership.

Technicians will then replace the “worm gear spring and redistribute or add grease as necessary”.

All repairs will be carried out free of charge.

The affected models were all produced between 2022 and 2025, according to the NHTSA.

They come from the Civic, CR-V and Acura lineups.

Some of the popular variants involved include the Civic Type R, CR-V Hybrid and Acura Integra.

It comes after Chrysler recalled 129,000 vehicles over a dangerous tech malfunction.

Robert Saleh escorted out of New York Jets training facility by security without being able to say goodbye to team

ROBERT SALEH was escorted out of the New York Jets training facility by security after he was fired.

The dismissed head coach was removed from the building without being able to say goodbye to the team.

Saleh was fired by the Jets on Tuesday after three years in the role and just five games into the season.

Sunday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings left the team with a 2-3 record this season.

After the match, Saleh predicted his own dismissal in an eerie press conference.

Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich has been placed in interim charge ahead of the game against the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.

The Jets have also been urged to hire six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick to replace Saleh and link-up with star quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

However, he would inherit a locker room that has been left “shocked” by the decision to fire Saleh.

It comes after Jordan Schultz reported Saleh was escorted out of the building by team security on Tuesday.

He was removed from the premises shortly after being fired, without a meeting with his players to say goodbye or inform them of the news.

Getty
Saleh was not able to say goodbye to his team after he was dismissed on Tuesday[/caption]

The 45-year-old’s predecessor Adam Gase was not removed by security when he was fired by the Jets in 2020.

Saleh’s exit comes after he had reportedly been set to shake up play-calling duties within his staff.

Why firing Saleh is the right call

By Ryan Sanudo, sports reporter

The New York Jets stunningly fired Robert Saleh after a 2-3 start to the season, but his resume and recent coaching showings did him no favors.

The Jets had their eyes set on not just being a playoff team, but also a Super Bowl-contending team with the return of Aaron Rodgers and other offensive additions.

But New York sits at 2-3 after consecutive disappointing losses – the first which occurred against the then-winless Denver Broncos while having a 10-day layoff.

The second defeat in London was the final straw for Jets owner Woody Johnson.

Mistakes and penalties have plagued the team on both sides of the ball – and both issues have been a consistent issue for New York in Saleh’s three-plus seasons at the helm.

Saleh has seen his defensive unit play stellar against the pass over the last two seasons, but he has been responsible for hiring the offensive staff that has come under fire.

The 45-year-old Saleh has also appeared to have a dicey relationship with Rodgers, who will always have his say respected.

Remember, Saleh seemed to pin false starts in the team’s loss to the Broncos on Rodgers’ cadence.

Saleh’s press conferences haven’t been pretty, either, as he has seemed tense since the Week 4 loss.

And when you factor in Saleh’s results, it’s hard to wrap your head around how he even lasted more than three campaigns.

He went 20-36 over 36 games with the Jets.

The NFL is a what have you done for me lately business and while the timing of Saleh’s firing stunned the world, the decision comes at a time when the New York squad needs motivation ahead of their Monday Night Football game with the Buffalo Bills.

Rodgers and company will now be playing under interim head coach and highly respected Jeff Ulbrich, who was the team’s defensive coordinator.

According to SNY, he was going to take them off Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and give them to Todd Downing.

Reports claiming Hackett would also be sacked by Saleh are wide of the mark, though.

The decision to hand play-calling duties to Downing was said to have been made on Tuesday morning.

Just minutes later, Saleh was sacked by Jets owner Woody Johnson.

The U.S. Sun has contacted the New York Jets organization for comment.

Shoppers are picking up Amazon’s Prime ‘Big Deal’ carpet cleaner for $81.99 – it’s even good for cars

Shoppers are racing to get their hands on Amazon’s Prime ‘Big Deal’ carpet cleaner – and it’s even good for cars.

The Ainlinso Bissell Multi-Purpose Portable Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner is a compact deep cleaner perfect for tackling tough messes.

The product claims it’s perfect for getting rid of strong stains[/caption]

It claims to remove spots and stains from carpets, upholstery, car interiors, and more.

Currently on sale for $81.99, this cleaning device comes in green and features a tank that holds around 48 ounces of cleaning formula.

It boasts a strong spray and suction to help remove tough stains and includes a Febreze Freshness formula.

Many people who have purchased the product are raving about it, giving it a five-star rating.

One detailed review explains why they love the product so much: “I wanted to wait to write a review until I had tested the Little Green on multiple types of stains on various fabrics/carpets, and it was not disappointing.

“So far, I’ve had 100% success cleaning up cat vomit, dog bile, and mud. These stains were cleaned off a wool throw rug, nylon/polyester blend carpet, and polyester upholstery, respectively.

“I used the provided Bissell Spot & Stain Febreze solution and didn’t find it to have an overwhelming scent.

“It works, which is the biggest thing for me! Plus, a couple of these stains, like the cat vomit one on the living room wool rug, had been there for months and nothing I tried would get it out.

“The machine is relatively light to carry around and is compact to stow away when finished. I liked that the electrical cord was very long which made it easy to use in rooms with only a few outlets.

“Any animal lover will know that no matter how much vacuuming you do, there’s always going to be some stray hairs left behind.

“I’m pleasantly surprised that the Little Green has yet to get clogged while I’ve been cleaning.

“I always wash the pieces after each use, but it seems like my Lab’s hair could clog anything. But, not Little Green!”

The same shopper did give a fair review and revealed the cons too: “I wish I could remove the hose completely to clean it, but the parts that can be removed to clean are easy to do so.

“When you load up the water-solution mixture into its tub and turn it upside down to install it into the machine, it does leak a little bit.

Next job, a complete clean of the inside of the car including the seats—nice job for a sunny day. I have pet strength fluid to be added

Amazon review

“Once it’s in the machine, it doesn’t continue leaking but it did catch me off guard the first time I used it thinking I did something wrong.

“I wish the instructions told me how best to use each of the attachments. It tells you how to install them, but I had to search online for more guidance on appropriate usage.”

But overall, they love the product and said: “Overall, the cons are very small compared to the pros.

“Especially if you have animals (or children), I would highly recommend this little guy. I’ve been telling family and friends about it ever since I got mine!”

Another satisfied customer added: “I’ve owned my machine for eight years now and it does the job every time.

“I house rescue dogs (three at the moment) so it has been used frequently and has never let me down. My home is fresh and clean, doing a thorough job every time.”

A third reviewer mentioned: “I’ve used warm plain water in it and it’s taken the mud off my pale blue leather settee beautifully (two spaniels).

“Next job, a complete clean of the inside of the car including the seats—nice job for a sunny day. I have pet strength fluid to be added.”

Nasa smashes deep space laser record paving the way for humans to land on Mars in the 2030s

NASA is celebrating an out-of-this-world milestone that may help land humans on Mars for the first time in the 2030s.

The US space agency is racing to send astronauts to the Red Planet as China advances with its own mega plans.

Distance is about the same as Earth and Mars at their furthest[/caption]

As part of the huge effort, Nasa will need to be able to communicate with astronauts in the deepest depths of our solar system and send huge amounts of data.

Experts managed to send a signal to spacecraft out in space using laser communications further than ever before.

Laser signals were pinged to Nasa’s Psyche spacecraft, which is currently on a mission to a unique metal-rich asteroid.

The signal travelled a whooping 290million miles, setting a new record.

That’s about the distance from Earth to Mars when it’s at its furthest.

Lasers are particularly desirable for future hopes of reaching Mars, as it can send important data at rates up to 100 times higher than radio frequencies.

This means more complex scientific discoveries can be beamed across, along with mind-blowing HD images and videos.

“The milestone is significant,” said Meera Srinivasan, from Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

“Laser communication requires a very high level of precision, and before we launched with Psyche, we didn’t know how much performance degradation we would see at our farthest distances.

“Now the techniques we use to track and point have been verified, confirming that optical communications can be a robust and transformative way to explore the solar system.”

Nasa Administrator Bill Nelson added: “Congrats, team. This extraordinary achievement will transform the way we explore the solar system.”

The US space agency is up against China who also has its eyes set on the Red Planet.

China recently announced that it will launch a historic sample mission around 2028, bring precious rocks from Mars back to Earth.

The country is planning to land its own astronauts on Mars by 2033.

ANALYSIS: Are we in a new space race?

By Millie Turner, Senior Technology & Science Reporter

Visions of humans on the Moon once more has sparked a renaissance for the space race of the 1960s.

While China has replaced the Soviet Union in this iteration, it is once again the US going toe-to-toe with whichever global superpower is brazen enough for the challenge.

The pair are already locked into an Earth-bound tech war, with fist-shaking over computer chips, AI and TikTok, which has somehow erupted into a race for the stars.

Nasa boss Bill Nelson hasn’t shied away from calling it a “race”, either.

Under President Xi Jinping, China spent roughly $14billion (11.2billion) on its ambitious space programme in 2023, according to Statista.

The US space agency has dominated the industry so far, though has only recently swallowed the bitter pill of scrapping the Viper Moon mission after $450million had already been spent, citing spiralling costs and delays.

Nasa’s own Mars Sample Return has also been subject to pushbacks, as the mission timeline falls back into the 2040s from its original 2028 launch date.

China’s knack for building things fast, and well, could tip the scales – effects of which we might be seeing in real-time, as the country looks set to beat Nasa to Mars.

Though I have no doubt that date will be revised at some point in the future.

The Airbus 350 had departed Seattle on Tuesday evening and was on its way to Istanbul when the tragedy happened.

Plane tracking website FlightRadar24 shows the aircraft flying north over Canada, before turning around over Baffin Island.

The 59-year-old had worked for the airline since 2007 and had passed a medical examination in March, the flag carrier said.

A spokesperson posted on X: “After an unsuccessful attempt to give first aid, the flight crew of another pilot and a co-pilot decided to make an emergency landing, but he died before landing.

“We wish Allah’s mercy upon our captain and patience to his grieving family, all his colleagues and loved ones.”

Passengers now stuck in New York will now fly to Istanbul out of New York, the spokesperson said.

I’ve been branded ‘UK’s strictest headteacher’ for kicking pupil out for their haircut – I don’t care I have standards

A HEADTEACHER was branded the ‘UK’s strictest’ after booting a student out of school over his haircut.

Despite parental uproar, Jon Richardson from Strood Academy in Kent has refused to change the rules.

Liam suffers from eczema and long hair causes his skin to flare up on his neck[/caption]

Liam, 15, was placed in a behavioural unit due to his skin fade, which he allegedly has to ease his eczema.

His stepdad Barry Sandman explained that his hairstyle was a way of cooling his neck to stop flare ups.

The youngster’s condition has worsened due to the “stress” of being removed from class – but Mr Richardson isn’t budging.

“Strood Academy is committed to maintaining a positive and inclusive learning environment where high standards of behaviour and appearance are upheld,” he told The Sun.

“These standards are consistently applied across the academy to ensure all students are prepared for learning and that our school community remains focused on achieving the best possible outcomes for every child.

“We are aware of concerns raised by a parent regarding a student who was placed in the academy’s behavioural unit following concerns over the length of his haircut, which did not meet the academy’s uniform policy.”

He explained that the academy has a “clear dress code”, which includes “guidelines on appropriate hairstyles”, which he says are communicated to parents and students.

Noting Liam’s condition, the head teacher said that the school will work “collaboratively” with his parents.

“We are in communication with the parent and have offered a meeting to discuss their concerns in more detail.

“We always take into consideration any specific circumstances, including medical conditions, and seek to work collaboratively with parents to resolve matters.

“At this time, no formal complaint has been lodged, and we continue to engage with the parent to find an appropriate resolution.”

The school’s policy states: “No extreme haircuts. eg: Skin fades, graphics, lines and must be a minimum of grade one cut (senior leadership teams discretion).”

Mr Sandman, says punishing Liam for his haircut is “unnecessary” and “horrible”.

He also said that he’d called reception as many as 18 times without getting an answer so has decided to lodge a formal written complaint.

The teen visited a barber shop on September 21, and remained in lessons until September 25, when he was told his trim did not meet guidelines.

He was placed in the behavioural unit the next day, before his furious mother marched into the school, which is part of the Leigh Academies Trust, and took him home.

Liam spent Friday at home doing school work and later visited the doctor, where he obtained a letter confirming his skin condition.

We are aware of concerns raised by a parent regarding a student who was placed in the academy’s behavioural unit following concerns over the length of his haircut, which did not meet the academy’s uniform policy.

Jon Richardson

He was allowed back into lessons on September 30, as his hair was deemed to have grown out long enough, Mr Sandman said.

But the 47-year-old says his stepson should have been exempt from the rules due to his eczema.

He said: “Something needs to change as Liam shouldn’t be missing out teaching time in his final year of GCSEs for a haircut that looks smart.

“It’s not like he has a mohawk, massively long braids or blue-dyed hair…

“If he had dreadlocks that were bright pink that would probably be fine.

“It is a sensible haircut. Pretty much every teenager in Medway has a similar haircut.

“Professionals have similar trims and it would not stop him from getting a job.

“Plus he has his haircut like this as he has suffered from eczema for years and the skin fade keeps his head cool during the autumn and summer months as the heat from wearing a blazer, shirt and coat makes him sweat and irritates his skin.

“He has been having the same haircut for years and we have provided the school with the medical details but because it doesn’t say explicitly that he needs a skin fade the school did not take it into account.

“Him being taken out of class for this is ridiculous and unnecessary. It did not stop him or other kids from getting on with their work.”

The American missed Wimbledon this year[/caption]

But after 30 years on the WTA circuit and seven Grand Slam titles, she insists she is not prepared to call time on her extraordinary career just yet because she still loves tennis.

That is despite the fact she has not played since first-round defeats in the Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and Miami in March – and not won a match since August 2023.

Williams, born in June 1980, told the Irish News: “I’m not done with the racquet yet.

“At this point, it’s about picking and choosing places I want to be.

“Last year I really wanted to play in Miami – home – because I hadn’t played there in like five years.

“It’s nice to be in a place where I can pick and choose, but my game is always at a high level. Even if I’m not on tour, I always keep my game quite high.

“I took some time off the court [after Miami] to do all kinds of things – I’m like, I need to go back to tennis so I can have some time to myself.

“I always watch the tournaments as much as I can – it’s hard to sit in front of the TV, and a lot of times by the time I have time at like 11pm it’s a replay, but it’s still fun to watch all the competition.”

Venus has won five Wimbledon titles while Serena collected seven of her 23 Majors at the All England Club.

But this summer’s tournament, won by Barbora Krejcikova, was the first women’s singles draw not featuring either Williams sister since 1996.

Venus, currently ranked No958 in the world with £32.6million in career earnings, has not been sitting around twiddling her thumbs during her time away from the court, though.

She runs her own interior design company, owns a plant-based protein shake called Happy Viking, wore an outfit of recycled tennis bags at Vogue World fashion event in Paris and released her latest book.

Strive: 8 Steps to Find Your Awesome is all about maximising potential to live and achieve your best life – something she has demonstrated in the past decade since her diagnosis for the autoimmune disease Sjogren’s syndrome.

Williams added: “Finding out I had an incurable autoimmune disorder – one that flares up unexpectedly, causing pain, numbness, and fatigue – was one of the hardest things to accept, especially when my career expects me to be at my physical best.

“Who gets diagnosed with a disease that starts with ‘S’ and ‘J’, you know? First of all, how do I pronounce this?

“It definitely made me look at things differently. Even when it was hard to look at things differently, just to focus on what I could accomplish instead of what I couldn’t.

“I think even this year I definitely pushed too hard, and it left me feeling very unmotivated, even though I had stuff to do.

“As an athlete, as a tennis player, you’re playing ten months a year – what balance is that?

“Number one is happiness. If you are not happy, nothing feels good – nothing feels successful or happy when you are sad inside.”

Wimbledon ditching line judges a double fault for British tennis

By Joshua Jones

THE absence of line judges at Wimbledon will be a sad sight.

For as long as I can remember, the men and women decked out in their Ralph Lauren outfits have been part of the furniture at the All England Club.

Yes, they provided some mild entertainment on the court when one would call “fault” with plenty of extra, and unnecessary, gusto and volume that boomed around Centre Court, prompting a snigger from the fans.

Then there was the ongoing game of dodgeball they had to play when a big serve nailed a mammoth ace down the line and they had to take rapid evasive action or take a whack to the top of the head.

And challenges provided some audience participation, excitedly joining in the clapping countdown before the inevitable “oooh” when the graphic showed just how close the ball was to landing in or out.

Purely objectively, Wimbledon’s decision to replace line judges with Hawk-Eye Live makes total sense.

The accuracy and consistency of calls in real-time will speed things up, save time and should mark the end of arguments over the tight incorrect calls – well, until the technology malfunctions.

And Wimbledon’s hand was somewhat forced to ditch tradition for their standing in tennis.

The Australian Open and US Open already use electronic line calling and the ATP Tour is adopting Hawk-Eye Live across all of its tournaments from 2025.

Wimbledon’s refusal to comply would leave them lagging behind and exposed to the threat of needless controversy over human error.

But the impact – as is so often the case in these decisions – has ramifications further down, below the surface with very little impact on Wimbledon’s Championships or the players.

It is on the line judges themselves.

Approximately 300 officials – aged from 18 to 80 – covered more than 650 matches at Wimbledon.

A fraction travel internationally with the circuit but the vast majority of those are part-time line judges based in the UK, earning up to £180 per day to work at the prestigious tournament and their chance to play their part at Wimbledon.

For many, they will help out at British tournaments throughout the year, spurred on by the possibility of taking to the lawns of the All England Club.

But it is understood many of those officials would be reluctant to work at the lower-level tournaments without the carrot of Wimbledon dangling in the summer.

That in turn will put a major stumbling block in the pathway for British tennis umpires, who grind up through the ranks to reach the pinnacle of the sport.

Like football with referees, tennis needs umpires and line judges.

So the inability to call “out” at Wimbledon could prove to be a major “fault” for the future of the UK’s tennis officials and therefore the state of the sport on these shores.
