Doctors had to restart my heart during the Rugby World Cup and I refereed the final just weeks later

WAYNE BARNES has revealed that he had his heart restarted just weeks before refereeing last year’s Rugby World Cup final.

The Englishman, 45, hung up his whistle after officiating South Africa’s 12-11 win over New Zealand at the Stade de France.

During the tournament, however, Barnes had suffered a major health scare.

Having taken charge of Ireland’s pool match against Tonga, the acclaimed official went out for what he expected to be a routine jog around Paris.

Around 15 minutes into his run, Barnes’ legs felt like “wet spaghetti” – with his heart rate reaching 230 beats per minute.

Barnes, who had an ablation operation after being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation in 2009, decided not to tell rugby officials, or even his wife Polly, about what had happened during his job.

And after resting the following day, he found himself officiating Wales’ clash with Australia that weekend.

“Three minutes into the game, Wales executed a move off a lineout and scrum-half Gareth Davies went flying over for a try,” Barnes recounted in his book, revealed in an excerpt in the Telegraph. “It was a start I could have done without, seeing as it required me to run about 50 metres.

“I thought, ‘Oh s***, I’m in trouble here’. I limited my running as much as possible for the rest of the first half, which both teams made easier for me by giving loads of penalties away, but I knew I had to tell my fellow referees during the break.”

Having skipped his usual post-match debrief beer, Barnes admitted on the phone to wife Polly that he was not feeling okay.

The following morning he feared that his career may be over, having already decided to hang up his whistle upon the tournament’s conclusion.

But in one last bid to prolong his decorated career by just a few extra weeks, Barnes got in contact with his cardiologist back in London.

After sending over an ECG reading, Barnes’ cardiologist told him that his heart had gone into tachycardia again, and that he could see him the following day to get it sorted.

So without telling rugby officials, he used his day off that week to fly back to London for a secret operation.

Barnes has since revealed: “While I was out for the count, Richard (his cardiologist) restarted my heart, and when I saw him again, he told me it had all gone to plan.

“Richard told me my left ventricle was still enlarged, that he might have to perform another ablation somewhere down the line, but that I’d be OK for the rest of the tournament.”

Just days later Barnes returned to the field, taking charge of Scotland’s thumping of Romania.

Despite his health scare, Barnes’ performances did not dip, impressing rugby chiefs.

He was then told that he would be taking charge of the Rugby World Cup final at the Stade de France, unless England would be in it.

So when Steve Borthwick‘s side were beaten 16-15 by South Africa in the semi-finals, Barnes was awarded the fairytale ending to his illustrious officiating career.

Russian cargo plane blasted with missile in giant fireball in ‘friendly fire’ disaster over Sudan leaving no survivors

A RUSSIAN cargo plane was shot down in a giant fireball after a friendly fire disaster that has left no survivors, reports say.

The transport aircraft flying over Sudan was hit by a guided missile fired by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The burning Russian-made Ilyushin Il-76T hit the ground and exploded in a giant fireball in the west of the country where fighting has been raging in the civil war

Debris burned across a wide area on the ground as the Sudanese soldiers celebrate around it, footage posted to social media shows.

Despite being Russian-made and crewed, the plane appears to have been working for the UAE – who have been backing the RSF rebels with weapons.

Documents belonging to two suspected Russian crew members with IDs linking back to a UAE company were found at the crash site.

Russian aviation channel Aviatorshchina on Telegram said: “The transport plane was mistakenly shot down early this morning by the Rapid Reaction Force, RSF.

“According to one of the commanders of the force, Ali Rizkallah, his subordinates used guided missiles to shoot down an ‘Egyptian Antonov’, which was allegedly used by the Egyptian military as a bomber.

“However, a little later they realised that they had shot down an Il-76, which was delivering aid from the UAE to Amjaras [in Chad], by ‘friendly fire’.”

Neighbouring Chad has become a staging point for weapons to go to before being smuggled into the RSF controlled areas of the country, experts say.

Documents at the scene are in the names of two Russian citizens Viktor Granov and Anton Selivanets, both aircraft engineers.

The Russian embassy in Sudan said it was in contact with local authorities and was investigating the circumstances of the incident.

The insurgent RSF have been fighting the government since the war broke out last year.

Russia has reportedly backed both sides in the conflict as it has sought to expand its influence in Africa.

Jane Banks tells tour tales as 1996 Lionesses get Hall of Fame recognition

The Lionesses will be inducted into rugby league’s hall of fame tonight
JANE BANKS

JANE Banks heard it all. Why are women playing rugby league? You should be in the kitchen. What is the point?

Being inducted into the sport’s Hall of Fame, along with the history-making Great Britain Lionesses side she was part of in 1996, is a pretty good reason.

Jane Banks, the youngest member of a groundbreaking tour, has told Great Britain’s Lionesses of 1996 did it
JANE BANKS

She can also say something many male players can only dream of saying. I beat the Aussies in Australia.

Aged 17, the Royal Mail worker Jane was the youngest member of the trailblazing side that funded itself to make the trip 28 years ago. She had to wait 26 to get the cap for it.

Now as she joins greats like Jim Sullivan, Billy Boston, Brian Bevan, Ellery Hanley, Martin Offiah and Andy Farrell – both individually and with her team-mates – it all seems worth it.

Jane, who was working part-time in a Pizza Hut when she was selected at 16, said: “It was all self-funded, we had no backing from anybody.

“We had to raise just over £50,000 to get there. It was things like bucket collections and bag packing. We did loads of bucket collections, we were at every match shaking a bucket!

“And we got people coming up going, ‘Women can’t play rugby league,’ as we were shaking a bucket trying to raise money to go on tour to Australia.

“Attitudes then were very different. We had, ‘Women can’t play rugby,’ a lot. Now we’re the only team to have won a series against Australia on their turf to this day.”

Even though it was the mid-1990s, bank transfers were unknown. So, the Lionesses’ tour manager flew Down Under with a suitcase full of money to pay for accommodation and travel!

And recognition of their 2-1 series victory was not exactly forthcoming.

“We were invited to Wembley for the Challenge Cup final,” Jane added. “We were thinking, ‘We’re Ashes winners, they’re going to parade us around.’

“We got there and it was like, ‘Here’s white tracksuits, white caps. You’re ging to shake that flag while the players come out.’

“It was crazy. At the time, we were like, ‘Are we dancing? A flag?’ It’s an ongoing joke now. It was bloody heavy, I’ll tell you!”

It may be more than 25 years late, but deserving recognition will come tonight when Jane, along with Michelle Land, is inducted individually into the Hall of Fame, along with the Lionesses – the first team to receive the honour.

Now working as a smoking cessation officer for Warrington Borough Council, the former player for her hometown team is ready for another ‘special’ moment.

She went on to be named player of the tour on the 1998 series in New Zealand and secured the player of the series award in the 2000 World Series, while playing in club matches her home town’s Victoria Park.

But Jane told SunSport: “It’s huge recognition for what we did. I was shocked when I found out I was being inducted as an individual but to be as a team as well makes it more special.

“I’ve not seen a lot of them for a while. We all got back in touch about two years ago when we got Great Britain caps, which we never received at the time.

“A lot of that was because it was all fairly hidden. No-one really knew what we’d achieved, then the heritage programme went through everything and sought us all out.

“At that point, we hadn’t seen each other for pretty much 20 years. Now we’re all on a group chat and talking all the time.”

Harvey Weinstein diagnosed with cancer weeks before he’s set to face retrial on rape and sexual assault charges

HARVEY Weinstein has been diagnosed with cancer.

The shamed Hollywood producer is battling the illness as he awaits a retrial – months after his 2020 rape conviction was overturned.

Weinstein has been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, as reported by NBC News.

Chronic myeloid leukemia is a type of bone marrow cancer, and around one person in every 526 will get the illness in their lifetime in the US, according to the American Cancer Society.

His team has slammed the speculation about his health.

“It is both troubling and unacceptable that such private and confidential health matters have become a subject of public discourse,” Craig Rothfeld, Weinstein’s prison consultant, told CNN.

“Out of respect for Mr Weinstein’s privacy, we will offer no further comment,” he said.

Disgraced Weinstein’s diagnosis comes just weeks after the 72-year-old underwent emergency heart surgery.

He received treatment after testing positive for Covid and contracting double pneumonia in his lungs.

Weinstein’s team said he suffered from a plethora of significant health conditions.

A date for Weinstein’s retrial on rape and sexual assault charges has been set for November 12.

It remains unknown if his cancer diagnosis will impact the timetable for his trial.

Weinstein was hit with a fresh indictment in September and is set to be retried on sex charges in New York.

He pled not guilty after being arraigned.

Prosecutors told how Weinstein was never charged for three alleged assaults mentioned during the 2020 trial.

They claimed that the alleged attacks took place in Manhattan hotels during the mid-2000s.

But Weinstein’s defense has hit back, saying prosecutors just want to add the new charges to their original case.

Lawyer Arthur Aidala said his team will not be ready for the trial.

A court of appeals overturned his 2020 conviction in the spring after claiming he didn’t receive a fair trial.

Weinstein had been serving a 23-year prison sentence when his conviction was overturned.

How Harvey Weinstein sparked the #MeToo movement

  • In October 2017, The New York Times published a bombshell article where numerous actresses alleged abuse at the hands of Harvey Weinstein.
  • Soon after, the actress Alyssa Milano asked women who have been sexually assaulted or harassed to share the words “Me Too” on social media.
  • The request quickly became a movement – with actresses like Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lawrence, and Uma Thurman all sharing their harrowing stories.
  • It was later revealed that “Me Too” was first used by activity Tarana Burke in 2006 to describe her sexual assault.
  • The media firestorm led to many media executives losing their positions, alongside backlash over whether the accusations were being properly investigated.
  • Weinstein remained at the center of it all and was one of the few who was hit with criminal charges.
  • A top executive who produced films like Pulp Fiction, Shakespeare in Love, and The Lord of the Rings, activist felt he was the perfect representation of how power and influence could be used for evil.

It’s expected that film producer Miriam “Mimi” Haley will be among those taking the stand when Weinstein’s retrial kicks off.

Weinstein remains behind bars after his rape conviction in Los Angeles.

In December 2022, he was found guilty of rape and sexual assault dating back to attacks that happened at a Los Angeles film festival in 2013.

At the time, Weinstein’s spokesperson Juda Engelmayer said the film producer was “obviously disappointed” in the verdict.

Meanwhile, in the UK, Weinstein will not face indecent assault charges after an investigation was dropped.

The probe, dropped in September, dated back to an allegation that Weinstein assaulted a woman between July 31 and August 31, 1996.

Harvey Weinstein Trial Timeline

  • October 2017: The New York Times reports the film mogul, whose Miramax film company won its first Oscar in 1997 for The English Patient, has reached legal settlements with eight women who accused him of sexual harassment spanning over 30 years. He is fired from his company, his wife leaves him, and the #Metoo movement is born.
  • May 2018: Weinstein was arrested on charges of rape and a criminal sex act involving alleged assaults of two women.
  • June 2018: He pleads not guilty to both charges and a third charge. One of them is eventually dropped.
  • December 2019: Weinstein agrees to a $25 million settlement with a number of women who accused him of wrongdoing.
  • February 2020: He is sentenced to 23 years in prison in New York for the charges brought against him in 2018.
  • December 2022: A jury in Los Angeles convicts him of raping a model.
  • February 2023: He receives a 16-year prison term, which runs alongside his New York sentence.
  • April 2024: His New York conviction is overturned, and a new trial is ordered.
  • September 2024: Weinstein undergoes treatment after contracting Covid and pneumonia.
  • September 2024: Weinstein hit with fresh sex charge.
  • November, 12, 2024: The proposed date for Weinstein’s rape retrial.
