I’m a gardening pro – the four houseplants that are virtually impossible to kill… you can basically forget about them

DO you want to own plants but they always seem to die on your watch?

If you fit this description, panic not, as a garden expert has revealed five plants which are “virtually impossible” for owners to kill.

If you always kill plants, there are four varieties you should try[/caption]

Money trees come highly recommended by the experts[/caption]

Experts from Stelrard shared the houseplants which have few care requirements compared to other options.

Here are the five you should consider buying…

Money tree

Money trees were said to be one of the top options for people who are not green fingered.

The experts told The Express: “Who says money doesn’t grow on trees? Well not literally with the money tree, but it is believed to bring good luck to whoever owns this plant.

“Simply water it weekly and place it in direct and partial sunlight.”

It’s important to note that money trees do need plenty of room to grow and if they do need repotting you should do this in spring.

Peace lily

Peace lilies are said to not need much care[/caption]

One pretty plant which is low-maintenance and easy to care for is a peace lily.

The gardening pros advised: “This is perhaps one of the easiest plants to take care of, it prefers bright, indirect sunlight but can tolerate lower light levels. It produces an attractive white flower that can last for weeks.”

The only thing you may wish to look out for is they are said to be sensitive to tap water, so you should water them with filtered water if possible.

Spider plant

Spider plants don’t require much attention[/caption]

Spider plants not only look interesting but are also very easy to look after too.

The pros said: “You can basically forget about this plant and it will still thrive in your home.”

While they could be the ideal plant for busy people, you should watch out if you have cats because they are “mildly hallucinogenic and slightly addictive for some.”

Just take care to not over water your plant and you should allow it to dry out between watering.

Devil’s ivy

Devil’s Ivy could also be the plant for you if you kill plants easily[/caption]

Another low-maintenance plant which is very popular is Devil’s Ivy.

The experts say they are very adaptable to different spots in your home, and do well indoors or in a shaded outdoor spot.

All they need is a little bit of indirect sunlight and some water whenever the soil feels like it needs some moisture.

Other plants that were advised for people who kill plants are aloe vera, corn plant, panda plant and the Chinese evergreen.

October gardening jobs

The Sun’s Gardening Editor, Veronica Lorraine, has shared the jobs you need to tackle in October.

“It’s a good time to trim deciduous hedges – like box, yew, hawthorn, hornbean and beech – plus hedge trimmers are a great upper body workout!

Make leafmould – gather up all the fallen leaves and fill either bin bags or plastic carrier bags. Seal the top, stick a few small holes in the bag – and then store for a year or more. Free compost!

It’s unlikely you’ll get any more red tomatoes so have one final harvest and chuck the plants on the compost. See if you can get the green ones to ripen by putting in a drawer (some say with a banana). Also keep the seeds from a couple – and plant again next year if they went well.

Finish getting in your spring bulbs. Ideally you’d have done daffs and alliums, but tulips are better in the ground when the soil temperature gets a bit colder.

It’s good to leave some plant litter in the ground – it adds to the nutrients as it rots down, and provides shelter and food for insects. But remove the manky brown bits collapsing all over the lawn/winter structure.

Mulch – it not only suppresses weeds, but keeps the soil warm, improves water retention and adds a little winter duvet to your outside space.

October’s a good month for carrots, peas, asparagus, broad beans, and rhubarb.”

Four ways to save money and the planet when getting your kid a Halloween costume

KIDS love getting into the Halloween spirit.

But parents will be horrified to learn that seven million scary costumes are thrown away in the UK each year.

Try these Halloween costume tricks to save the planet and your purse[/caption]

That’s a lot of money wasted for one day of the year.

To save your purse, and the planet, try these tricks and treats . . .

SWAP SHOP: Halloween costume swaps are popping up across the country.

Check out local libraries, community hubs and Facebook groups to see if there is one near you.

If not, you could organise your own.

Set a date, put the word out among friends, school groups or social media and give it a try.

With a tight time-frame this year, you could start small and aim to make it more of an event in 2025.

SPOOKY SAVINGS: Charity shops are the perfect place to put together a spooky Halloween costume on a limited budget.

You may be lucky to snap up a complete second-hand fright night outfit.

If not, use a charity shop find to put together your own look.

Look for a cheap wedding, bridesmaid or evening dress.

Add rips and fake blood stains, then go all out on some scary make-up.

SECOND-TIME SCARIES: Marketplaces like Vinted have grown hugely in recent years and they’re an essential stop for anyone looking for a Halloween costume.

Go to the Fancy Dress & Costumes section to pick up a bargain on a pre-loved outfit.

Little witches and wizards can pick up a scary look for under £5, including postage.

MAKE IT UP: Halloween costumes are two-a-penny, but it is shocking make-up that will make you stand out from the crowd.

Save on your outfit and go to town on your face effects instead.

Get a face paint pallet for under a fiver from a supermarket or Superdrug and use it to terrifying effect.

YouTube is packed with Halloween make-up tutorials to get you started.

Who is Monique Hoyt? 15-year-old who survived Rodney Alcala rape and kidnapping ordeal

MONIQUE Hoyt was one of the few people who survived an encounter with serial killer Rodney Alcala, during his crime spree which ran from 1968 until 1979.

The murderer’s crimes were dramatized in Netflix’s Woman of the Hour, which is set a year before Rodney murdered Monique.

Surviving Rodney Alcala

Monique was fifteen years old when she crossed paths with Rodney Alcala on Valentines Day in February 1979.

She was hitchhiking home when Rodney offered to drive her home, before actually taking her back to his apartment and raping her.

He then took her to a mountainous area in California, where he took pictures of her as taking pictures of his victims was one of Rodney’s modus operandi.

Rodney hit Monique in the head with a rock, but she managed to slip away when he drove to a gas station to use a bathroom.

She filed a police report about her terrifying experience, but Rodney’s mother posted his bail.

The Dating Game Killer’s crime spree

Rodney’s crime spree began in 1968, when he attacked 16-year-old Morgan Rowan and 8-year-old Tali Shapiro.

Both of his victims survived their traumatic encounters, but Rodney then murdered Trans World Airlines hostess Cornelia Crilley.

After being charged with child molestation for his attack on Tali in 1971, Rodney stayed in prison until 1977.

However, he then murdered a 27-year-old nurse named Georgia Wixted and an 18-year-old girl named Jill Barcombe after his release.

Rodney later appeared on The Dating Game in 1978, where he tried to charm a bachelorette named Cheryl Bradshaw into choosing him as a date.

Cheryl did eventually pick Rodney, but chose not to go on the date after he made several sinister jokes.

Eventually, Rodney was brought to justice after murdering a 12-year-old girl named Robin Samsoe.

The police circulated a sketch of the suspect which was recognised as Rodney by his old parole officer.

He was arrested in 1979 and sentenced to death in 1980.

However, the sentence was overturned in 1984 and he spent the rest of his life in prison, before dying in 2021.

Woman of the Hour

Rodney’s crimes are dramatized in Netflix’s Woman of the Hour, which is set a year before he attacked Monique.

The film’s ending focuses on his encounter with Monique, though, and stays close to the real-life events that inspired the movie.

However, the film does not reveal that Rodney’s mother was the one to post bail which allowed him to escape the law once again.

The film was directed by Anna Kendrick, who also stars in the movie as Cheryl Bradshaw.

Woman of the Hour made its Netflix debut on October 16, 2024, and is available for streaming.

Incredible 100-1 darts underdog who stunned Luke Humphries WHITEWASHES world No16 at Czech Darts Open

LAST week, Mike De Decker was the toast of Leicester.

This week, the Belgian darts star, 28, is continuing his rapid rise with another astounding win.

Luke Humphries was beaten by De Decker in the World Grand Prix final last week

On Saturday, De Decker faced off against the much-fancied Danny Noppert.

And he absolutely destroyed the Dutchman 6-0 in a one-sided contest.

Amazingly, De Decker averaged 102 in the whitewash.

It followed his impressive performance on Friday, when he disposed of Brett Claydon 6-1 and averaged 104.

Noppert only managed one dart at a double, in the second leg on double tops.

When it was missed, De Decker punished him – checking out 150.

De Decker then followed that with two 15-darters, a 12-darter and 14-darter in the thrashing.

The impressive win comes after De Decker stunned Luke Humphries at the World Grand Prix.

Coming into the tournament, he was a 100-1 shot for victory.

However, he looked anything but the novice – winning 6-4 against the world champion and scooping a £120,000 jackpot.

He admitted: “It feels amazing. Oh my goodness I’m over the moon.

“I’ve been happy with my performances this week but this tops it off.

“The way Luke has been playing since last year. Being the person who beats him in a final, picking up this trophy, I have no words. I’m so happy.

I won three Super Bowls with Patriots but had bad record in first season – Jerod Mayo has to measure success differently

SCOTT Pioli has urged the New England Patriots not to panic and judge their season by more than just wins and losses.

The Patriots flew to London this weekend to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars with just one win from six games.

Jerod Mayo has to establish his process and measure success different from wins and losses, Scott Pioli thinks[/caption]

Scott Pioli won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots[/caption]

Pioli, 59, was director of player personnel on Bill Belichick’s Patriots dynasty for eight years.

He helped turn the franchise around in the year 2000 before overseeing three Super Bowl wins.

And, in an exclusive interview with The Sun, Pioli drew on his own experience to send a message of advice to new head coach Jerod Mayo.

“Our first year in New England we were 5-11 – people forget that,” Pioli said.

“We were internally making significant strides so people could see we were getting better with our strength and conditioning, our preparation and our understanding of our system.

“I think Jerod Mayo has to establish his system and process.

“You have your plan, you go to work and you execute your plan.

“Not to say you don’t tweak things, but in order for you to maintain credibility with the people you’re leading, everyone in the organization has to understand what’s expected.”

Pioli added, “Progress in year one and two isn’t necessarily based on wins and losses.

“It’s a new team, it’s a new direction and it’s a new era and things don’t happen overnight.

“Whether players are doing things well fundamentally – I think that’s how you measure success.

“That’s how we won a lot of championships, because the team was prepared for situational football.

“We had success and won the Super Bowl in our second season.

“But we also married into a lot of very good talent.”

Pioli was also wary of making a “blanket statement” on the development of rookie quarterbacks.

The former Patriots director of player personnel (right) admitted they married into some good talent – like quarterback Tom Brady (left)[/caption]

Drake Maye, 22, made his first start last weekend since he was drafted No. 3 overall this summer.

“Every single player has a different developmental cycle and a way to develop,” Pioli said.

“Guys like Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes didn’t play at all in their first year.

“Some players go right to it – that ruins some careers but it helps some careers for players.

“You can’t make blanket statements, but you don’t want to put him in harm’s way.”

You have 20/20 visions and a high IQ if you can spot the photographer hidden among the trees in under five seconds

THIS mind-boggling optical illusion has puzzle fanatics stumped and struggling to find the answer – but do you have what it takes?

If you can spot the sneaky snapper hiding in this funky brainteaser in under five seconds, you may have 20/20 vision and a high IQ.

Everyone can see the trees perched on the cliff edge – but only those with a high IQ can solve the taxing illusion and find the cameraman.

It may look like a simple nature scene – cliffs surrounded by deep blue mountains, green fir trees and large clouds.

But the busy scene makes it near impossible to distinguish where the photographer is lurking inside the image.

Are you able to work out where the snapper lies in the image?

It might seem a bit daunting at first, but the key is to carefully examine each section of the scene.

Be quick, the clock is ticking! Scroll down to reveal the answer if you’re still stumped.

Meanwhile, why not try some other optical illusions while you scroll?

Test your brain power and solve the questions in this test to reveal if you have a high IQ.

This picture will surely leave you baffled – and you might scratch your head trying to find the correct solution.

Although it may seem like an ordinary image, this is no easy feat, and the average person gives up after a minute.

How can optical illusions and brainteasers help me?

ENGAGING in activities like solving optical illusions and brainteasers can have many cognitive benefits as it can stimulate various brain regions.

Some benefits include:

  • Cognitive stimulation: Engaging in these activities challenges the brain, promoting mental agility and flexibility.
  • Problem-solving skills: Regular practice enhances analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Memory improvement: These challenges often require memory recall and can contribute to better memory function.
  • Creativity: They encourage thinking outside the box, fostering creativity and innovative thought processes.
  • Focus and attention: Working on optical illusions and brainteasers requires concentration, contributing to improved focus.
  • Stress relief: The enjoyable nature of these puzzles can act as a form of relaxation and stress relief.

If you look thoroughly, you’ll spot a photographer hiding behind the vibrant green leaves at the centre-left of the picture.

But don’t panic if you didn’t spot it – scroll down below to find the solution.

Psychologists at The University of Glasgow found that staring at an optical illusion can improve eyesight by allowing you to see small print.

Escape London says puzzles can also give your mind a great workout and may “boost your brain’s activity” which “reduces the risk of dementia.”

And according to ZenBusiness: “These visual puzzles can give you a good mental workout that can, in turn, help you think more efficiently and solve problems more easily.”
