What happened on the fishing trip on Gavin and Stacey? Theories explained

GAVIN and Stacey fans have long since wondered what REALLY happened on Uncle Bryn and his nephew Jason’s fishing trip.

The story has been teased ever since the first series, but it has never actually been revealed what happened.

What happened on the fishing trip?

Many Gavin and Stacey fans were still left wondering what on earth happened on Uncle Bryn’s (Rob Brydon) fishing trip with his nephew Jason (Robert Wilfort).

It was brought up again in the 2019 Christmas special, but was still not explained.

We know that what ever happened between Bryn and Jason happened because they “were very cold”, and that it was “legal in Wales“, and somehow involved “soup”.

With only snippets of information to go, fans have cone up with their own theories of what happened on the now famous fishing trip.

Things got heated

From what we know happened, it is suggested it was highly embarrassing, hence the need for secrecy.

It could also be potentially sexual due to the taboo way it’s talked about.

That could lead many people to believe that Jason and Bryn had some sort of sexual contact in order to keep warm.

However, this fan theory can be easily squashed, due to the fact Bryn also states at one point that what happened is “legal in Wales”.

As the pair are nephew and uncle, any sexual relationship they would’ve had would’ve been illegal.

They fell into the river

As we know, what happened, happened, because they “were very cold”.

One fan tweeted: “More than likely, Bryn and Jason went out fishing. Jason fell in and Bryn jumped in after him.

“After pulling him put, Bryn knew that getting warm was essential and, being Bryn, didn’t think before he got them both stripped to get out of their soaking wet clothes and to cuddle to get warm.

“Upon realising, after a while, that they were two men, not to mention uncle and nephew, and both gay, they both have a sickening feeling of guilt about the situation.”

They went to a hotel

It suggested that the duo had been intent on camping out during their fishing trip, but it soon became too cold to remain in their tents.

Instead, they checked into a hotel – and the proprietor, worried about their exposure to the rain and winds, made up a special vat of leek and potato soup for the pair to enjoy in their rooms.

While Jason was in the bathroom, Bryn made use of the television set in their room to find an “adult program”.

He settled back in the bed to watch the admittedly frisky show, resting the mug of soup on his stomach to keep himself warm.

However, when Jason came in, Bryn jumped, spilling the soup all over his trousers – and even causing some to splash upwards onto the ceiling.

With the adult program still playing in the background, things obviously looked a little confusing to Jason.

The entire situation remained awkward between the pair of them forever more.

The big mystery

The mystery was never solved during Gavin and Stacey’s original run.

Just as Uncle Bryn was finally about to tell his friends and family what actually happened during the Christmas Special, he was interrupted by the children.

But it turns out show writers Ruth Jones and James Corden had originally planned to explain the fishing trip mystery way back in series two, before changing their minds.

Lisa Edwards – who owned the house the show used as Bryn’s home – previously revealed how she still has a script of a never-aired episode.

The script had been left in their home on Trinity Street in Barry and promised to solve the show’s biggest mystery.

Speaking to Wales Online, Lisa said: “We have a script for an episode which was never aired.

“It was supposed to be Uncle Bryn and his nephew watching this VHS.

“They both watch it together to see what happened on the fishing trip. But they decided to not show the episode.”

Unfortunately the script didn’t even reveal what happened on the fishing trip, and as the episode never aired, fans remain in the dark after all these years.

The mystery began in series one at Gavin and Stacey’s wedding reception with Jason attempting to clear the air with Bryn outside the venue.

He said: “I never told anyone, you know. And besides, it wasn’t a big deal. Lots of people do it, it’s not against the law.”

How to watch the Gavin and Stacey’s Christmas special

Gavin and Stacey will air on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer special at 9pm on Christmas Day.

Fans are being treated to an extra long episode which will last for 1 hr 35 minutes, finishing at 10.35pm.

Gavin and Stacey became a surprise hit when it first launched on the BBC in 2007, and went on to have three series and two Christmas Specials.

Every single episode that has aired between 2007 and 2019 can be watched on the iPlayer right now.

Gavin and Stacey's Best Moments

With the news that the show is set to make an exciting return to screens, let's take a look at some of the comedy programme's biggest and best moments...

  • Smithy and Rudi’s American Boy rap – No one will ever forget when James Corden and Sheridan Smith rapped perfectly word for word the Kanye West and Estelle hit American Boy as they walked across the car park on the phone to Gavin.
  • Pam’s Vegetarian faux pas – Despite loving a cheesburger, Pam found herself caught up in a web of unexpected lies when she claimed to be Vegetarian. She is forced to keep up the secret throughout the entire show and uses hubby Mick to help her scoff meat. She is later rumbled when Stacey catches her in the act as she scoffs ham in the kitchen. Stacey says to her: “Is that ham, Pam!?… “I’ve seen you, Pam. A scotch egg here, a bit of bacon there, putting those regular sausages into the Linda McCartney box”.
  • THAT fishing trip – It remains one of the biggest mysteries in Gavin and Stacey history as to just exactly what did happen on the ill-fated fishing trip. Bryn appears to be hiding a secret as to an occurance between him and his nephew Jason which has left relations fractures. Ness’ on-off boyfriend, Dave, is the only other person to know the whole truth. Bryn did appear to allude to him and Jason lying together naked to keep warm as he said to Dave: “We’re going to have this out, once and for all, man to man, you may know what happened, David, but you don’t know why it happened! It was freezing cold, it was! And when you are that cold…”
  • Islands in the Stream – No one can ever forget the classic Karaoke performance of Islands in the Stream. Nessa and Bryn performed the track in front of all their nearest and dearest. It saw the whole pub burst into some line-dancing as they enjoyed a boozy night out.
  • The Xmas special proposal – In 2019, fans were left overjoyed when the show made a comeback but it ended on the ultimate cliffhanger. Nessa asked Smithy if she would marry him as she finally laid bare her feelings for him. Fans were gutted as the show then cut straight to the credits as they never found out just how Smithy answered. Will all be revealed in the brand new episode?

Phoenix Suns announce ‘mind-blowing’ $2 menu for all home games in 2025 NBA season – way cheaper than New York Knicks

HUNGRY basketball fans are in for a festive treat after the Phoenix Suns announced a dramatic menu makeover.

The NBA franchise has slashed prices on a number of popular concourse items in the run-up to Christmas.

Suns owner Mat Ishbia unveiled the fan-friendly menu on Thursday ahead of the game with the Indiana Pacers.

“When I walk the concourse at games there aren’t food options for families who don’t want to spend a lot of money,” Ishbia explained.

“That needs to change.”

The Suns’ solution has been to create what they call the NBA’s “most affordable, fan-friendly menu.”

A hot dog at the Footprint Center will now set back fans just $2, down from a previous price of $9.

The same price has been applied to a bag of chips and popcorn, reducing the cost by over 60 per cent.

While 16oz bottles of water and soda have also been capped at the $2 discount price.

For comparison, a hotdog at the New York Knicks will set you back $9, with a beer priced at $16, per Delish.

“Every professional team can do this,” declared one impressed fan.

“They know they are price-gouging their fans. Tickets, Parking, Jerseys etc… those are already expensive enough. Price of food at games should NOT be like they are.”

“Sporting events should have a family-friendly atmosphere. Charging insane amounts of money for food takes away from the experience,” said another.

“I support this!! Other owners have 24hrs to respond,” challenged a third.

“I am moving to Phoenix!” joked a fourth.

“$8.50 for a bottle of water is criminal,” declared a fifth.

New rights deal

The NBA signed an 11-year deal with three networks for the league's rights from the 2025-26 season.

And there will be no games on TNT for the first time since the network launched in 1988.

The Walt Disney Company will continue to show the league with 80 regular-season games across ESPN and ABC.

They will also show around 18 playoff games from the first and second round, a Conference Finals series for 10 of the 11 years, and remain the home of the NBA Finals.

NBC will return as an NBA broadcaster for the first time since 2002.

The network will show up to 100 games per season across it’s channels and Peacock streaming service.

It will also be the home of NBA All-Star and show approximately 28 playoff games from the first and second round.

NBC will show one Conference Finals Series for six of the 11 years, rotating with new broadcaster Amazon Prime.

Amazon will show 66 NBA regular-season games including one on Black Friday.

The streaming service is also the home of the latter stages of the NBA Cup and the entire Play-In Tournament.

Prime will also broadcast around one third of the playoff games in the first and second round.

Phoenix has committed to the new $2 menu for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.

“A family of 4 used to spend $98 on hot dogs/water/popcorn,” Ishbia added.

“Now they can enjoy that same meal for $24.

“Our fans and community are the foundation of what we do and we will continue to invest in making this the best organization in all of basketball, on and off the court.”

Ishbia bought the Suns from Robert Sarver for $4 billion in December 2022.

The fan-focused owner has since promised to revolutionize the way supporters interact with the franchise.

Earlier this year, he helped make select Suns games available to watch on free, over-the-air television.

Driver hit with $8,600 repair bill over simple issue – then gets parts himself and fixes it for $50 instead

A FUMING driver has revealed he managed to fix an issue with his car himself for just $50 after being quoted $8,600 by a dealership.

TikTok user Earl, who’s part of Texas-based rock band Earlshreds, took a break from posting about music to reveal what he described as “one of the biggest scams in the automotive industry.”

The musician dubbed it ‘one of the biggest scams in the automotive industry’[/caption]

In the video, Earl reveals he took his Toyota to a dealership in Humble, Texas, after it started “shifting rough” and displaying the check engine warning.

Hoping to get the issue fixed, he took the Toyota truck to a local dealership, but was horrified by the price of $8,600 for the repairs.

This is when it appears Earl decided to take matters into his own hands, managing to fix the problem himself – spending just $50 “in fluid and parts” and manually changing out the car’s transmission fluid.

He said: “$50 later, changed out the transmission fluid, runs just fine.

He added: “It’s the biggest scam I’ve ever seen in my entire life.”

At the end of the video, which has since gone viral and amassed thousands of likes, Earl advised his Texas-based followers not to visit the dealership, alleging he had more “horror stories” about them.

This comes as another Toyota driver was recently hit with a $4,000 repair bill after she noticed the car’s engine was making sputtering sounds.

Heather Velasco was heading out to lunch with one of her coworkers when she noticed a strong gasoline smell in the area where she parked her Toyota on September 19.

Velasco had parked her pick-up truck outside Kindred Hospital in Rancho Cucamonga, California, just west of San Bernardino.

However, Velasco immediately pushed her concerns aside when she noticed a diesel truck nearby and believed the gasoline smell emanating from there.

But, when she got in her truck and began driving, her new Toyota, which she had purchased three years before, began making sputtering sounds.

“We drove across the street, and my car started sputtering,” Velasco told KTLA.

When she pulled over and began inspecting her vehicle, Velasco said she noticed her truck was leaking gas from underneath.

“I just looked under, and sure enough, there was a hole, and it was leaking gas, and then I looked up, and I saw another hole,” the mother of three said.

Velasco had to get her vehicle towed and was forced to pay $4,000 upfront or risk paying a $1,000 deductible with an increase in her auto insurance.

“It’s hard times. We’re living in times where everything is inflated,” she told KTLA.

And elsewhere, a beloved Toyota model is being discontinued in just weeks after drivers were excited to see its recent return to US markets.

The Toyota Venza won’t make it to the next model year after four years for sale as a reborn hybrid SUV, known in other markets as the Harrier.

Toyota confirmed that Venza would cease production after the 2024 model year to make way for the first-ever 2025 Toyota Crown Signia when it was announced last year.

The auto giant is now replacing the Venza with the Crown Signia to continue offering crossover SUVs in their lineup.
