Mum, 31, denies playing cooking games on phone while seven-month-old son drowned in bath at home

A MUM denies playing cooking games on her phone while her baby son drowned in the bath.

Seven-month-old Charlie Goodall died in February 2022 after he fell from his newly-fitted seat which was inside the tub.

Mum Danielle Massey had placed the tot inside the bath and claims she left him unattended briefly, while she went to fetch a clean towel.

But prosecutors claim the 31-year-old actually ignored him for 26 minutes, in which time she possibly fell asleep on the sofa and played apps on her phone including ‘Cooking Madness: A Chef’s Game.’

When Charlie was found unresponsive, Massey called the emergency services who rushed to the property on West Chilton Terrace, County Durham.

He was airlifted the RVI in Newcastle but despite the best efforts, he couldn’t be saved.

‘IT’S MY FAULT’

The court heard Massey was arrested and later told a police officer: “It’s all my fault. I killed my baby.”

The mum has already admitted manslaughter and having possession of cannabis on the day Charlie died but is undergoing a trial of issue at Teesside Crown Court to contest the basis of her guilty plea.

She maintains her gross negligence is limited to the use of the “unsuitable” bath seat which Charlie fell from and not via the use of games on her phone.

The court was told the mother had been under the supervision of social services for the first few months of Charlie’s life.

Giving evidence, Massey said she had also been on a “bathing workshop” with a family worker before Charlie was born.

Richard Wright KC said: “The prosecution case is that defendant left her child unattended for a long period of time so that he fell out of his unsafe bath seat and drowned which would not have happened if he had been properly supervised as he should have been at the time.

“The defence cast the issue of whether the Crown can prove that the defendant was playing a game on her phone for 26 minutes during which time her son drowned.”

The court heard written evidence from a number of parties including the defendant’s mother and her ex partner, Charlie’s father William Goodall.

Mr Goodall said he was at home nearby, which he shared with his current partner, when he received a phone call from a panicked Massey telling him to come over.

Mr Goodall described seeing Charlie being worked on by the paramedics and said he noticed the house to appear dirty and untidy.

Mr Goodall was initially arrested but later cleared of doing any wrongdoing.

Taking to the witness stand, Massey said she had a broken sleep two days before Charlie died as her cat had recently given birth overnight.

She also admitted to habitually taking cannabis at night times, when Charlie was asleep.

On the day Charlie died, the court heard her phone was alleged to have been open for 26 minutes during the period he was in the bath between 1.40pm and 2.06pm.

But when asked by her defence barrister Martin Sharpe if she was using her mobile in that time she denied it, insisting she was bathing her son.

Referring to the bath seat he fell from, Massey told the court the equipment was brand new which she had fitted shortly before the incident.

Describing what unfolded, she said: “I went to pick up the towel but realised I didn’t have one in the bathroom so at that point that’s when I decided I had to go get a towel. I was only planning on going to the dining table.

“At that point I left the bathroom thinking I was only going to be a minute.

“I realised I took all the towels upstairs because the cat had kittens so I ran upstairs to see if I could find any clean towels.”

Massey, who was diagnosed with asthma in 2013, said she then returned downstairs to the same floor as the bathroom having failed to find any fresh towels but needed to sit down on the sofa to catch her breath.

She continued: “I closed my eyes during the breathing techniques. I’m not 100% if I feel asleep, I was exhausted.”

Mr Sharpe then asked: “Can you say with any certainty you were asleep on the sofa?” Massey replied: “No.”

Recalling what happened next, she said: “I walked in and I seen him laid there and I picked him up and started CPR.”

Massey described Charlie as laying to the side before she picked him to begin CPR while retrieving her phone from the sofa to call 999.

She said she carried on trying to resuscitate him until medics arrived.

But at the scene she told ambulance staff she had left Charlie to go make a bottle and not to get a towel.

When quizzed why by Mr Sharpe she replied: “My head was all over the place.

“I was an emotional wreck because I had no idea if my son was alive or dead at this point.”

Mr Wright KC told Massey phone records showed her opening three different apps including Cooking Madness at 13:40:19.

Massey replied: “I bathed my son, I went to get a towel. I did not play on the games.”

Mr Justice Goss adjourned the hearing until tomorrow.

The case continues.

Keely Hodgkinson’s SPOTY win could push Olympic superstar into the £1m-a-year bracket with sponsorships and endorsements

KEELY HODGKINSON’s SPOTY triumph is the crowning glory of a magnificent year.

And according to financial experts, she is due to receive a cash windfall – possibly pushing her annual earnings towards the £1MILLION mark.

And it could soon lead to her raking in the cash courtesy of endorsement deals[/caption]

She went into the Paris Olympics with an enormous weight of expectations on her shoulders as favourite for 800m gold.

But Hodgkinson, still only 22, coped admirably with the pressure to deliver emphatically over 116 seconds and two laps of the Stade de France track.

And now she can utilise her new-found fame with the BBC‘s SPOTY award to ensure her financial security for years to come.

Dr Dan Plumley, sports finance expert at Sheffield Hallam University, told casino.co.uk: “Scooping the SPOTY award will only increase her fame and status.

“She’s already becoming one of the most recognisable faces for UK Athletics.

“Her success can lead to off-track partnerships and endorsements with good relationships with brands and marketing agencies.

“Off-field earnings are a key driver of financial success for individual athletes.

“And it is not unusual to see athletes pursue sponsorship and commercial opportunities to boost their income.

“Form and success on the track will continue to drive what happens for next for Hodgkinson.

“But there is little doubt that the sponsorship opportunities will continue to come in.”

Hodgkinson stole the nation’s hearts last summer in Paris.

Everybody had expected Hodgkinson – the world’s leading 800 metres runner – to storm to victory on the night of Monday, August 5 and she did just that.

Her beaming smile and warm personality is why this girl from the Greater Manchester town of Atherton, who now lives in Salford, was voted last night as BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

This is the fourth successive year a woman has lifted the prestigious trophy – following tennis superstar Emma Raducanu and footballers Beth Mead and Mary Earps – and that is a record.

It is the 19th time in 60 years someone from track-and-field has received the main SPOTY Award, more than any other sport.

Decent company that includes former winners Steve Ovett, Seb Coe, Daley Thompson, Kelly Holmes and Mo Farah.

A reminder that even if some big names refuse to do media or the sport continues to suffer financial cutbacks, there is an appetite for athletics at the highest level.

These days Hodgkinson, is used to winning races that she enters but that was not always the case.

Until this summer, the middle-distance heroine had to accept silver at THREE major championships – the 2021 Olympics and 2022 and 2023 World Championships.

Those second-placed results really hit her hard, especially as she was defeated on each occasion by fractions of a second.

Concerns that she might once again become the bridesmaid were allayed as she entered the Games having posted a personal best of 1:54.61 in London in July – the sixth-best time in history.

Everything went perfectly on the track in 2024 – “the first time in a year where I’ve actually achieved everything ” – something that perhaps only happens once or twice in an athlete’s career.

Yet this time 12 months ago, she was unable to run for NINE WEEKS over Christmas and the New Year due to a serious knee issue.

It was all down to a freak accident where she had “torn a ligament and tendon and a little bit of my hamstring around the knee area”.

Whilst she was eager to resume training early, it was only by listening to and trusting her coach Trevor Painter that she managed to rest up and then make a successful return.

Sir Keir Starmer dealt major blow after Mauritius rips up plan to hand over Chagos Islands

SIR Keir Starmer has been dealt a major blow after Mauritius tore up his plan to hand over the Chagos Islands.

Newly elected Mauritian leader Navinchandra Ramgoolam declared the agreement “not good enough” and ordered it back to the drawing board.

He told his Parliament the pact “would not produce the benefits” his country deserved and revealed he had already relayed the snub to Britain’s National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell.

The move piles pressure on Sir Keir, who made sealing the deal one of his first big foreign policy priorities.

Mr Ramgoolam’s decision comes after a legal review recommended renegotiating the rushed agreement struck before Mauritius’s election.

Adding to Sir Keir’s woes, Donald Trump is reportedly ready to torpedo the pact over fears it threatens the US air base on Diego Garcia.

The base, crucial to American operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, sits on the strategically vital atoll in the Indian Ocean.

But there are growing concerns that Mauritius, a trade ally of China, could let Beijing spy on the base if it takes control.

Downing Street said their position on the deal hasn’t changed, with the PM’s spokesman saying: “There has obviously been a change of leadership in Mauritius.

“So we’ve been engaging with the new administration on the details of the deal… We’re confident that the agreement is in both sides’ interests.”

Tommy Fury, his partner, and their decorated Christmas tree.

TOMMY Fury today shared a rare look inside his new home as he put up decorations in preparation for his first solo Christmas after splitting from Molly-Mae.

The former couple announced their shock break-up in the summer leaving fans stunned.

This Christmas is in stark contrast to the happier photo from last year[/caption]

Tommy today shared a snap of his huge Christmas tree which took pride of place in his home.

The boxer moved into his bachelor pad after the breakdown of his relationship with Molly-Mae.

The lone Christmas tree is in stark contrast to last year, when the former happy couple shared a snap of themselves in matching PJs with daughter Bambi.

The pair loved sharing their festive photos with their fans, which often included showing off their lavish gifts.

But this Christmas will be a whole different ball game, as they navigate the holidays without each other.

Meanwhile, the festive photo comes just days after the pair were was spotted in public together for the first time since their break-up.

Tommy and Molly-Mae, whose romance began on Love Island, sparked speculation about a possible reunion after being seen together.

The duo were seen leaving a venue in Cheshire with their daughter, Bambi.

The split was surrounded by rumours of infidelity on Tommy’s part, allegations he has strongly denied.

Molly-Mae and Tommy, who shocked fans when they broke-up over the summer, have been navigating co-parenting their one-year-old while adjusting to their new chapter.

But in a recent video shared on Molly-Mae’s YouTube channel, the fashion icon explained to fans that she has been struggling to keep up with life lately.

Speaking to her 1.96million subscribers, she said: “After the last week, my cup feels a little bit empty to be honest with you, just emotionally.

“With the documentary and everything, it is just a lot.

“A lot of work and we are trying to get everything done so we can wrap up for Christmas and I just feel very very busy at the minute.”

But The Sun previously revealed how Molly-Mae was not rekindling her romance with Tommy Fury.

The influencer enjoyed a weekend away with her girls as she ignored reports accusing her of reuniting with the shamed boxer.

She re-emphasised this in a YouTube vlog where she said: “This next chapter of my life, and this next one with Maebe, I honestly feel it will be the best yet.”

A source recently told The Sun of her priorities post-split and said: “Molly-Mae’s attention has shifted towards building her brand and embracing new opportunities.

“She’s putting all her energy into the business while maintaining a strong co-parenting relationship with Tommy.

“Molly-Mae’s only focus right now is giving her business the best lift off – this project has been a childhood dream and years in the making.”

Timeline of Molly-Mae and Tommy Fury's split

After five years together, Molly-Mae and Tommy Fury split up in August 2024.

At around 4pm on Wednesday, August 14, Molly-Mae and Tommy suffer an explosive showdown and Molly-Mae announces her split from fiancé Tommy Fury, saying ‘ I never imagined our story would end, especially not this way’.

An hour later Tommy shares a separate and brief statement confirming they have parted ways, and thanks Molly-Mae for making him ‘a dad’.

The real reason they split emerges and on Thursday, August 15 The Sun reveals how Molly-Mae learned Tommy had cheated on her – leading to an explosive showdown.

On Saturday, August 17, The Sun reveals how Molly-Mae had been sent an upsetting video showing Tommy kissing a girl in a nightclub in North Macedonia on a lads holiday.

Exactly one week after the split a Danish woman accused of getting close to Tommy speaks to The Sun. On Wednesday, August 21, she denies she is the girl who kissed Tommy.

Fury as Ed Miliband says it’s ‘completely logical’ to say energy bills will come down in dash to Net Zero

ED MILIBAND came under fire last night for saying it’s “completely logical” to say energy bills will come down in the dash to Net Zero.

The Energy Secretary has previously pledged he would be able to save consumers £300 as part of the government’s clean energy drive.

His intervention came as he said the green action taken so far by the government, including decarbonising the electricity grid by 2030, was “just the beginning”.

The coming months will see the government also unveil an updated plan to meet its carbon budget – which places a restriction on the total amount of greenhouse gases it can emit.

He also told MPs he is “very sympathetic” over calls for all new homes to have solar panels installed on the roof, saying: “Watch this space.”

But the rush to hit the targets will affect people’s cars, their boilers and their energy bills, the Tories said.

Shadow Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho: “Ed Miliband promised to cut people’s energy bills by £300, but instead is leaving pensioners in the cold this winter.

“He’ll make the country poorer, send industry fleeing, and leave taxpayers with a colossal bill.

“We only produce 1% of global emissions, yet Ed will make us a warning not an example for the rest of the world.”

Five clubs Marcus Rashford could join after bombshell revelation he ‘wants a new challenge’

MARCUS RASHFORD sensationally threw his future into doubt by revealing he is ready for a “new challenge”.

The boyhood Manchester United fan and player was dropped for his side’s 2-1 win at the Etihad against rivals City.

Marcus Rashford sensationally threw his Man Utd future into doubt[/caption]

And that came amid speculation the club are ready to sell the England international.

Now in an interview with journalist Henry Winter, he said: “For me, personally, I think I’m ready for a new challenge and the next steps.”

With Rashford’s next move in question, here SunSport looks at five teams he could join.

PSG

The French champions have been heavily linked with Rashford over the past few seasons.

And PSG are yet to fully replace Neymar on the left-wing, opening up the opportunity for Rashford to do so.

Bayern Munich

The German giants were linked with Rashford earlier in the season, just after the summer window.

England skipper Harry Kane could help tempt over Rashford but he would have heavy competition in Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry.

Barcelona

The Spanish champs reportedly turned their attention to Rashford after missing out on the signing of Nico Williams last summer.

Barcelona are stocked up on wide options but with Robert Lewandowski now 36, Rashford’s ability to play centrally could be key.

Arsenal

The Gunners have never shied away from signing stars from rivals, recently Kai Havertz and Raheem Sterling from Chelsea.

And if Rashford wants to remain in the Premier League, a move to Arsenal under Mikel Arteta could attract the forward.

Chelsea

An outsider could be a move to West London – like Rashford’s former United team-mate Jadon Sancho did last summer.

But, Chelsea are well versed on the left with Sancho, Joao Felix and Pedro Neto all playing on that flank this campaign.

Huge 90s band spark rumours they’re reuniting as they share new photo seven years after death of frontman

THE surviving members of iconic rock band Soundgarden have sparked reunion hopes after performing together at a charity fundraiser.

Guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Ben Shepherd, and drummer Matt Cameron, reunited under the moniker Nudedragons – an anagram of Soundgarden – for the charity event in Seattle.

The performance, part of the annual Smooch benefit concert supporting Seattle Children’s Hospital, featured a six-song set with Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, and vocalist Shaina Shepherd filling in for late frontman Chris Cornell.

The setlist included tracks like Hunted Down, Outshined, Flower, and Beyond the Wheel, with McKagan joining for Kickstand and a rendition of MC5’s Kick Out the Jams.

This marks the first time the trio has performed together since 2021, sparking speculation about a potential full-scale reunion.

In April 2023, Soundgarden reached an agreement to release seven unreleased tracks featuring Cornell’s vocals.

However, no official release date has been announced.

While the recent charity performance has fueled reunion rumours, the band has not confirmed any plans for future projects or tours.

The band shared a photo with fans through a heartfelt post on social media.

The image shows the surviving members standing together, signaling a moment of unity for both them and their fans.

It comes after the tragic death of their legendary frontman Chris in 2017.

Cornell’s death, ruled as suicide, sent shockwaves through the music world and brought increased awareness to mental health struggles.

He was found dead on the bathroom floor of his hotel room in Detroit at around 12.05am on May 18, 2017.

A toxicology report showed he had drugs – including those used to counter the effects of opioids – in his system.

Cornell had spoken openly in interviews of his struggles with drugs as a teenager and later with alcohol.

He said in 2007 he had been sober since checking himself into rehab in 2002 and spoke of periods of depression and agoraphobia.

Chris had been married to wife Vicky for 13 years.

They shared children Toni, 20, and son, Christopher, 19.

Chris also had another daughter, Lillian, 24, from a previous marriage to Susan Silver, who was also the manager of Soundgarden.
