I’m a pensioner & Labour’s fuel duty hike is kick in the teeth after losing Winter Fuel Payment – I’ll struggle for food

A PENSIONER has revealed that she’ll be forced to cut down on food if fuel duty rises as expected this month.

Millions of pensioners are facing a double whammy this winter as duty rises are combined with prior cuts to Winter Fuel Payments.

Pensioner Judith Briggs says she’ll be foreced to ‘cut down on a meal or reducing the size of meals’ after cuts to Winter Fuel Payment and the fuel duty hike
a button that says keep it down with a gas pump
The tax has remain frozen for more than a decade, in part thanks to The Sun’s Keep It Down Campaign

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is widely expected to reverse the 2022 cut in fuel duty in the upcoming Autumn Statement on October 30.

The main rate of the tax has remained frozen for more than a decade in a victory for The Sun’s long-running Keep It Down Campaign.

Now, this added cost is expected to ramp up expenses for drivers by 20 to 48 per cent this winter – as the impact of colder conditions will be combined with potential fuel duty increases, according to the statistics from the AA.

This comes just months after Keir Starmer’s Labour government agreed to make Winter Fuel Payments available only to those on pension credits or other means-tested benefits.

For many pensioners, the rise in fuel duty is a kick in the teeth and could see the difference between putting food on the table or not in the coming months.

72-year-old Judith Briggs, from Pudsey in West Yorks, is just one of those set to bear the brunt of any decision to increase the costs at the pump.

Speaking to The Sun, Judith said she fears pensioners and working people are not being protected by the government ahead of this month’s budget.

Indeed, an increase of 5p or even 10p in fuel duty for Judith would mean “cutting down on a meal or reducing the size of the meals.”

She added: “Everything seems to be hitting pensioners at the moment, particularly.

“We don’t have an opportunity to earn more money. Where are we going to get extra from?

“We can’t claim anything because we’re just so over the limit.

“We’ve paid a pension at work for the privilege of having a little bit more than the state pension, and now we’re being penalised for it.”

Judith, who drives a Volkswagen Passat to do her weekly shopping and other errands, also mentioned that she tries to use public transport whenever she can as it’s cheaper.

However, she describes her local service as unreliable that “doesn’t serve the purpose.”

In a message to the Chancellor, Judith urges her to “stop attacking pensioners” and to go after the people “earning the big money.”

This comes as Reeves was warned a fuel duty hike in the budget would come at the “worst possible time” for drivers.

With clocks going back on October 27, a deadly combo of freezing temperatures and early darkness will make engines work harder and guzzle more fuel.

Elsewhere, millions of drivers could be affected following fresh legislation to combat dangerous driving.

Motorists under 21 in the UK would be hit by the moves put forward by the AA.

The Sun's 14-year campaign to freeze fuel duty

The Sun has backed drivers as part of the Keep It Down campaign with rates of fuel duty not rising since the start of 2011.

Former Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt earlier this year thanked Sun readers for helping him to make the case to freeze fuel duty in his last Budget.

The freeze meant drivers would not have to face a potential £100 rise in motoring costs as a result of a 12p per litre duty hike.

Our decade-long campaign fights on behalf of readers to freeze duty on petrol and diesel to help deal with rising living costs.

Mr Hunt said: “I know how much Sun readers are feeling the pinch right now.

“Whether you drive a van, a hatchback or a people carrier I know how much you need to be on the road.

“Keeping it down means hard-working people will have an extra £100 this year without having to cut down using their vehicle.”

Strictly fans spot ‘secret show feud’ as they slam judge’s ‘spiteful’ scoring saying ‘he just doesn’t like them’

STRICTLY think they’ve spotted a “secret show feud” after “spiteful” scoring from one of the judges.

Saturday night’s Strictly Come Dancing saw Dr Punam Krishan and Gorka Marquez dance a Viennese Waltz.

Shirley was also accused of favouritism by unimpressed fans[/caption]

The performance achieved an overall score of 21 from judges Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and Anton Du Beke.

But it was Craig’s low score of four that got viewers talking on social media – with some accusing him of “not liking” Punam.

Craig told Punam and Gorka: “I thought it was a little bit too social, like you were just going for a stroll in the park without a care in the world.

“It’s true. It lacked musicality, it lacked energy.”

One viewer commented: “Recently he’s given a couple of 4s that just seem a bit spiteful and I’m not sure why (Paul last week and Punam this week).

“While the other 3 seem to overscore their faves, Craig seems to have people he just doesn’t like.”

Another said: “Craig is such a villain.” Someone else wrote: “Shirley shure has her faves… And Craig.”

And a third added: “Thought Craig’s 4 for Dr P was harsh.”

Fans also accused Shirley of favouritism after her comments for Pete Wicks and Jowita Prystal.

After their dance, Shirley said: “A very masculine approach to the Rumba, I like that. With a very feminine lady on the end of your arm.

“I loved all the lifts. There probably shouldn’t have been lifts, should’ve been keeping your feet on the floor.

“But I’m going to let them slide. You picked up – they were excellent in what you did.”

She added: “You isolated the upper-half of your body and you rolled those hips in the figure eight… I was mesmerised.

“I just need a little bit more of that figure of eight everywhere and you would have delighted me.

“That isolation, I’ll be thinking about that for a week!”

Some viewers, however were left unimpressed by Shirley’s assessment.

One wrote: “Shirley says she’ll ignore Pete’s faults & illegal lifts cause she was turned on by ONE hip movement… HOW IS SHE EMPLOYED?!”

Liam Payne never stopped loving Cheryl after split – this will be so difficult for her, says Simon Cowell’s brother Tony

LIAM Payne ‘never stopped loving Cheryl’ after their split, according to Simon Cowell’s brother Tony Cowell.

The One Direction band member, who shared son Bear, aged seven, with the Promise This hitmaker, passed away aged 31 after falling from a hotel balcony.

Liam and Cheryl share a seven year old son named Bear together[/caption]

And Tony has said this will be “so difficult” for singer Cheryl.

He told Closer magazine: “Liam was just 16 years old when I first met him backstage at The X Factor in 2010.

“I will never forget how open and honest he was. He always had a huge smile on his face. He had a quiet maturity about him, even then.

“Our family has known Liam for so many years. I will always remember how he always made the effort to speak to our late mum, Julie, when she was in Simon’s dressing room.

“Yes, the fame took its toll on his mental health, but he remained kind and considerate and an incredible friend to so many, and a wonderful father to [his son] Bear; so generous and private.”

He continued: “Liam was determined to gain Simon’s approval [on The X Factor]. He desperately wanted to please him.

“We are devastated. I feel for Simon, too. He met with Liam a few months ago, when Liam took Bear to see him at his house in the Cotswolds, and Bear played with his son, Eric.

“I also feel for Cheryl, as I know Liam never stopped loving her and Bear. It’s going to be so difficult for her. I can’t imagine her pain. Louis Walsh is devastated too. He told me, ‘Liam had this star quality about him. I will miss him.’

“It’s been moving to see this outpouring of grief around the world for Liam. I want to remember him as a beautiful young man, a normal kid trying to battle his demons.”

Liam was 23 on Bear’s arrival in 2017.

A source previously told how Little Things hitmaker Liam was building things back up for his son and said to OK! Magazine: “We don’t see a lot of Bear on Liam’s social media but I think he wants to prove to Cheryl that he’s getting his life together.”

During a podcast interview in June 2022, Liam described Bear as “a lovely, lovely boy” and praised his ex-partner Cheryl, 41.

Inside Liam Payne and Cheryl's romance

By Joanne Kavanagh, Showbiz Reporter

It was a romance that caused a media storm.

One Direction hunk Liam Payne was only 14 when he met former X Factor judge Cheryl during the show in 2008.

But it wasn’t until 2016 – when the Girls Aloud singer was divorcing her second husband – that the pair got together despite their ten-year age gap.

The couple made their relationship official in May of that year when they appeared at Eva Longoria’s Global Gift Gala in Paris.

In 2017, Liam paid a sweet tribute to his girlfriend by getting a tattoo of her eye on his arm.

Cheryl was pregnant at the time and gave birth to a boy on March 22, 2017.

She posted a picture on Instagram of Liam cradling their 7lb 9oz baby and captioned: “On Wednesday Liam and I became parents to an incredibly beautiful, healthy baby boy looking like a dream.”

One pal told The Sun: “Liam didn’t leave Cheryl’s side throughout the birth, and like her, he is besotted with their new son and can’t wait to take him home.

“This is the perfect Mother’s Day for Cheryl.”

The Sun revealed in May 2017 that the couple named their son Bear.

They decided on the unusual name after spending a week getting to know him.

In February 2018, The Sun broke the news that Liam’s constant travelling to promote his solo career had placed a huge strain on the relationship, and the pair were ready to split.

That same month, Cheryl said “none of it matters” as she shrugged off questions about her crumbling romance with Liam during a BBC Breakfast interview.

They then put on a united front together at the Brit Awards where they smiled on the red carpet and Cheryl joked about the couple’s ‘safe word’.

However, by July 2018, Cheryl and Liam made the decision to split.

A pal told The Sun: “Cheryl and Liam worked really hard on their relationship – they had troubles earlier this year and were able to get through them.

“But they’re in different stages of their lives and, after a lot of careful thought, came to a decision that it’s best for everyone if they do go their separate ways.”

Liam and Cheryl released a statement confirming their break-up which read: “We are sad to announce that we are going our separate ways. It’s been a tough decision for us to make.

“We still have so much love for each other as a family. Bear is our world and we ask that you respect his privacy as we navigate our way through this together.”

He said: “She is the best mum in the world, I couldn’t ask for someone better.”

Last year, he revealed he spent 100 days in a wellness clinic.

He told of his rehab stint and said: “I just needed to take a little bit of time out for myself actually, because I kind of became somebody who I didn’t really recognise any more.”

At the time, he praised Cheryl and their son and said: “Honestly, more than anything I want to say thank you to Bear and his mum for giving me a little bit of freedom to go and get well.

“There is no point trying to be a dad when you have nothing to teach.

“I feel like I have a grip on life now.

“After I got back out, that process had worked for me, but there were still some little bits left that I kind of had to deal with myself.”

Major airline introduces new boarding system that stops the ‘worst kind’ of airport passengers

A NEW system could soon stop those annoying passengers who try to board the plane too early.

American Airlines is rolling out the new technology at a number of airports.

Some annoying passengers try to board before their gate is called[/caption]

One frustrating passenger behaviour is those who try to board too early, before their group is called.

Back in 2018, a study conducted by London Stansted Airport and YouGov revealed the top 10 most annoying passenger habits at the airport.

Queue jumpers came out on top.

But American Airlines’ new system will see a loud sound played for passengers who scan their boarding pass at the gate if they are boarding in the wrong group.

They will then be told by staff to wait for their group to be called.

Currently in place at Albuquerque International Sunport airport and Tucson International Airport, it will test it at others including Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).

A spokesperson told Travel and Leisure: “We are in the early phase of testing new technology used during the boarding process.

“The new technology is designed to ensure customers receive the benefits of priority boarding with ease and helps improve the boarding experience by providing greater visibility into boarding progress for our team.”

And there is a reason airlines board from front to back too, and its to encourage passengers to buy more expensive tickets.

First boarding usually include those in first class and business class, as well as frequent fliers.

Despite this then meaning huge queues in the aisle for economy passengers, experts have said the priority boarding can entice travellers to book tickets in a better class.

In theory, the best way to board a plane would be all of the window seats, followed by middle seat and aisle.

United Airlines currently uses the WILMA system, which stands for “window-middle-aisle”.

Otherwise there is also a boarding technique called the ‘Steffen method’.

This would implement the window-middle-aisle technique, but board all odd rows before even rows.

This means allowing more space between rows for passengers to put bags in overhead lockers and get into their seats.

But until all airlines roll this out, you can expect passengers to still crowd at the gates, especially on budget flights where there is limited overhead locker space.

This annoying airport habit is gate-licing – where passengers congregate at the boarding gate even if they are not called for boarding.

Viewers struggled to hear the singer[/caption]

The Murder on the Dancefloor singer was “drowned out” by cheering, clapping and even screaming audience members.

“I had to switch it off it was hurting my ears,” complained one fan.

“Why is it that women today feel the need to scream at every opportunity its not just Strictly it’s a lot of these reallity shows as well.”

Another added: “I noticed that woman’s stupid scream, but wondered if someone told her to stop being annoying as she quickly calmed down.”

Someone else said: “It was dreadful. I honestly thought someone had forgotten to turn Sophie’s mic on!”

A viewer commented: “The sound level was atrocious for Sophie Ellis-Bextor, since her singing was easily drowned out by the audience.”

“The hand-clapping really irritates me ! Not sure how you’d stop it at this point, though.”

Paul Merson became the fourth celebrity to be eliminated from the 20th series of the competition.

The former footballer failed to impress the judges in the dance-off against JLS star JB Gill and his dance partner Amy Dowden.

Speaking to hosts Tess Daley and Claudia Winkleman after his and Karen Hauer’s axe, Paul said: “It’s been really good. For anybody I talk to, I would say you’ve got to go on this show. It’s amazing – everybody.

“It’s been amazing, honestly, amazing. I loved every minute of it, I’ve had a great teacher. Karen’s been amazing, absolutely amazing and I couldn’t wish for a better coach.

“I’ve loved every minute of it. I can dance now – I’ve won because I can dance, I couldn’t dance before and I can half dance now. It’s a bonus, absolute bonus.”

I’ve been married for 28 years but we sleep with other people, it makes our relationship stronger, says Michelle Visage

MICHELLE Visage has been married for 28 years, but she’s recently revealed all on her open relationship.

The RuPaul’s Drag Race judge confessed that she and her husband David Case have full transparency in their relationship and claimed that their openness makes them stronger.

Speaking on the Origins With Cush Jumbo podcast, Michelle explained “we live openly, so he would get off knowing that I was so happy”[/caption]

Speaking on the Origins With Cush Jumbo podcast, Michelle Visage, 56, explained how she met her now-husband.

She shared: “So when I met David, I was 26. I got married at 27. Still young.

“We’ve been together for 28 years now and I met him in New York City in Central Park and I had just gotten out of a relationship that was like the love of my life and he destroyed me.

“After that, I had a summer of debauchery and then I met David in Central Park and he was so opposite. He was very much like Michael, my ex fiance.”

The three-time Emmy winner then shared all on her unique and open relationship.

In Hollywood, a long marriage is the stuff of fairy tales, but Michelle is frank about the dynamics of their relationship and how it thrives.

She revealed: “[David] works drag cons with me, and he comes to all these things with me, and listen, my husband’s quite good looking, so the gay men have let it be known that he’s quite good looking.

“He beams with pride. He’s got that thing down. I think you call it compersion.

“We live openly, so he would get off knowing that I was so happy and no matter what it is that I do, and I’m not just talking sexually.

“Whatever it is, I don’t know if I have compersion in me to be really excited if he’s doing something with another woman but I know that it exists and he is 100% that.”

Cush Jumbo, the actress best known for her leading role as attorney Lucca Quinn in the CBS drama series The Good Wife, chimed in and said: “It’s like giving you the opportunity to have the space to feel like you never have to hide any piece of yourself.”

To this, the former Strictly star replied and confirmed: “And I don’t and neither does he. Sometimes that hurts, but that’s what makes us stronger.

We live openly, so he would get off knowing that I was so happy

Michelle Visage

“The full transparency of the way we live our lives. Completely and, by the way, sometimes it’s not even necessary.

“It’s just, meaning, we don’t do anything. It’s just the ability to be able to. […] And that’s what works for us.”

The star, who grew up in New Jersey as Michelle Shupack, met her husband when she was singing in the girl band Seduction.

David, a successful screenwriter from Los Angeles, was starting out as an actor when he was introduced to Michelle at an industry party.

What is an open relationship?

An open relationship means having more than one sexual partner at the same time.

Both parties in the relationship agree to be non-exclusive and one or both parties engages in sexual activities outside the relationship.

If one or both parties engage in sexual relationships without an agreement, this would be classed as cheating.

Other names for an open relationship are polyamory and consensual non-monogamy.

They married in 1997 and have two daughters Lillie, and Lola, with David putting his career on hold to raise the girls while Michelle worked.

Michelle, who appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2015 and has been a staunch LGBTQ+ supporter for decades added: “David and I just started talking, and it was like magic. We got engaged six weeks later and we got married nine months later. Right away. Straight away. That night. Done.

“And he wouldn’t sleep with me that night. I tried. And he’s like, I just want to make sure this isn’t a rebound. Came back the next night. But the first night, he said no. He said no.

As we grow together, we also grow separately, and our needs and our wants will change

Michelle Visage

“He’s so opposite of anybody I’ve ever dated. The kindest soul. He’s lovely.”

When it comes to an almost 30-year marriage, Michelle revealed the secrets to the success of their relationship.

She confessed: “Kindness, understanding, independence, knowing who you are, knowing what you need from your partner, knowing what you’re willing to negotiate, I think is important because as we grow together, we also grow separately, and our needs and our wants will change.

“So you have to be able to talk about that and sometimes you can work it out and in your case sometimes you can’t.”

Married At First Sight’s controversial bride Hannah takes savage swipe at ex Stephen after ‘wife swap’ scandal

MARRIED At First Sight bride Hannah has taken a savage swipe at ex Stephen after her kiss with Orson was exposed last night.

In a tense commitment ceremony, Stephen and Hannah AND Orson and Richelle called time on their romances – after a shock wife swap.

Hannah hinted that her time on the E4 show is not over

Last week saw Stephen try to crack on with Sionainn, which sparked a huge row with Ryan.

Meanwhile, Hannah enjoyed a secret snog with Orson on the last day of the retreat after developing a bond with him.

After last night’s commitment ceremony was aired, Hannah took to social media with a lengthy statement and had some brutal words for her ex.

She cheekily told her ex Stephen to kiss her “a***” and hinted that she is set to recouple with Orson on the E4 show.

Hannah wrote: “So many mixed emotions as I close the chapter on a very short & pretty chaotic ‘marriage’ – but before I get into all that let’s hope my two week husband sees the divorce era pics cos he can kiss my,” with a peach emoji.

She continued: “Despite living through and watching back one of the most challenging experiences of my life’s little journey I am so god damn proud of myself and I am walking away with my head higher than it’s ever been before.

“I am so proud to be a woman who gives everything she does her absolute all, no matter what hurdles I face!!”

Hannah admitted she was true to herself despite making a few mistakes along the way.

She went on: “Yes I made some mistakes which I’ve owned and I am far from perfect but living in a super stressful environment when you’re isolated & excluded, with only a couple of people in your corner & then having your whole personality bashed & your integrity questioned on a daily basis sure was not easy!

“And the only way my MAFS journey could have been any different was if I forced myself to change who I am.

“I refuse to filter my personality & be quieter. I will not become a shell of myself because I’m not fitting the narrative of the people around me.

“I won’t let anybody try to change my personality when it becomes “too much”.

“I refuse to let group gossip stop me from being myself.”

Hannah concluded saying she was grateful for her MAFS experience and hinted: “Peace out wifey life…but maybe not completely the end just yet!”

Besides getting into blazing rows with her husband Stephen, Hannah has also gotten on the wrong side of a few female co-stars for ‘flirting’ with their husbands.

Things got even more awkward during tonight’s episode when Lacey revealed that Orson and Hannah had shared a kiss.

And perhaps not surprisingly Richelle and Orson also decided to leave as they exchanged insults on the sofa.

Those watching at home were pleased that Hannah and Stephen have called it quits.

One person commented: “Stephen you tried NOTHING.”

A second said: “Stephen has been gone for a few weeks already.”

While a third added: “Hannah you deserve more better than Stephen.”

Viewers also felt relieved that Richelle and Orson also walked.

Fans had been waiting for Orson’s affair to be revealed after Richelle let slip how something had happened – after she cruelly trolled by viewers for her behaviour towards Orson.

She accused Orson of trying to recouple with another bride, telling fans: “People will see the truth. It’s a waiting game.”

Speaking during their exits tonight, Stephen told Hannah: “I don’t know what the reasons are of why you are here.”

She told the experts: “I think this is my opportunity to try and leave this process as amicably as I can with everybody. Whatever’s happened has happened.”

This Morning’s Deirdre Sanders gives health update after revealing cancer has returned

THIS Morning agony aunt Deidre Sanders has given a health update live on-air after revealing her cancer has returned.

Earlier this month, the much-loved ITV star, 79, told how the disease had made a comeback after two years.

Now The Sun’s retired agony aunt, whose iconic Dear Deidre column helped solve readers’ sex and relationship problems for more than 40 years, has given an update on Tuesday’s show.

She told This Morning hosts Cat Deeley, 47, and Ben Shephard, 49, she has got “everything crossed” after undergoing surgery.

Deirdre, 79, praised the “fantastic treatment from the NHS” and said: “I will find out if they got it all in a couple of weeks time.

“I have got everything crossed.

“I was told it was a tiny, tiny cancer so I am optimistic.”

After she wrapped her This Morning advice segment, the expert told how it was “good to be back.”

Ben then kindly wished her well and said: “Let us know when you get your results.”

CANCER BATTLE

Deirdre, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022, told of her “shock” second diagnosis earlier in October.

She told the This Morning hosts she had no symptoms and malignant cells were detected through her scheduled mammogram followed by an ultrasound scan and a biopsy.

Deidre said: “No I haven’t had symptoms, I haven’t felt run down.

“I haven’t felt tired. I hadn’t had any discomfort. If I did a self check I couldn’t feel anything because it’s so tiny there is nothing to feel.

“It’s purely down to having the mammogram that showed it.

“And then you get referred back and I had a biopsy, and then it revealed it was cancer.”

Cancer screenings in England

CATCHING cancer early gives you the best chance of survival, and a huge part of that is attending regular screenings.

NHS programmes can help diagnose the disease, or risk of it, and improve the likelihood of successful treatment.

There are three national screening programmes in England: cervical screening, breast screening and bowel screening.

“If you are eligible, please make every effort to have your screening test as they can detect a problem early, before you have any symptoms. ,” the NHS says.

“Finding out about a problem early can mean that treatment is more effective.”

Cervical screening

This is offered in England to people with a cervix aged 25 to 64 and is routinely carried out every three years up to the age of 49, and every five from 50 to 64.

Depending on the result, people may be recalled earlier.

During a cervical screening, samples are tested for high risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which causes nearly all cervical cancers.

Those that test positive are then analysed further.

Breast screening

Breast screenings, which involve an X-ray test called a mammogram that can spot cancers when they are too small to see or feel, are usually offered to women aged 50 to 71 in England.

But the NHS is trialling them for women under 50 if they have a high risk of developing breast cancer.

Bowel screening

This test detects whether patients are showing any early signs of cancer.

It is available to everyone aged 54 to 74, with the programme gradually expanding to those 50-plus after The Sun’s No Time 2 Lose campaign.

Currently, those aged 54 to 74 are automatically sent an at-home test kit every two years, so make sure your GP has your correct address.

The at-home test involves providing a small poo sample to be checked for tiny amounts of blood, which could be caused by cancer.

If you’re 75 or over, you can ask for a kit every two years by phoning the free bowel cancer screening helpline on 0800 707 60 60.

The beloved agony aunt said she will have surgery in 10 days to remove the cancerous cells that were found in her other breast.

Breast cancer is the most common form of the disease in the UK with 56,000 cases per year and 12,000 deaths.

Deidre’s first diagnosis in 2022 came after an “error” saw her left off a list of women aged 70 who had not been invited to have their mammograms.

Speaking to The Sun at the time, she said she began “feeling achy” and realised she had a backache that “seemed to be spreading into my right breast.”

Deidre retired from The Sun in December 2020.

She has been an agony aunt on This Morning since 2016 and has also published several books.
