Veggies who eat fake meats are are 42% more likely to get to depression than people who don’t

THE vegetarian diet has a number of health benefits, research shows.

But perhaps one element of it should be avoided, after it was linked to depression.

Veggie meats are linked with depression in a new study[/caption]

A study found vegetarians are at risk of depression if they ate meat alternatives, called plant-based meat alternatives (PBMA).

They include products such as fake bacon, chicken, sausages or burgers and are increasingly seen on supermarket shelves.

In fact many large stores have an aisle dedicated to such products.

But their health value, when compared to meat itself, is debated.

For example, a study this year linked their consumption with higher blood pressure.

The latest research, led by the University of Surrey, analysed the UK Biobank, a database of half a million Brits aged between 40 and 69 years.

According to the findings, published in Food Frontiers, vegetarians who consumed PBMAs had a 42 per cent increased risk of depression compared to vegetarians who refrained from PBMAs.

They also had higher blood pressure and C-reactive protein levels, a marker of inflammation, and lower levels of apolipoprotein A, a protein associated with HDL, a “good” cholesterol.

PBMAs were, however, linked to a 40 per cent reduced risk of irritable bowel syndrome.

Professor Nophar Geifman, from the School of Health Sciences at the university and senior author of the study, said plant-based meat alternatives may be a “safe option when they are part of an overall balanced diet”.

“However, the potential link between these types of food, inflammation and depression warrants further investigation,” he added.

The researchers wanted to see whether PBMAs have similar risks as ultra-processed foods, which have been linked to at least 32 harmful health effects, including obesity, cancer, type 2 diabetes and depression.

UPFs are those that contain added ingredients you would not find in your own cupboards, such as emulsifiers, additives or binding agents.

They cover everything from biscuits to yoghurt and account for two-thirds of British adult diets.

‘Fake meat’ inherently contains UPF-type ingredients to add to the taste and texture.

Professor Anthony Whetton, co-author of the study from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Surrey, said: “Ultra-processed plant-based meat alternatives can be a useful way for people to transition to a vegetarian diet effectively, and that helps with sustainable agricultural practices.

“Further research, including longitudinal studies and trials with more diverse populations, is necessary to confirm these findings and the relationship between vegetarian foods and mood.”

What are the benefits of going plant-based?

There is no 'best diet' - though vegans and meat-eaters would tell you otherwise.

Scientists say the ‘best diet in the world’ is the Mediterranean diet, which emphasises plant-based foods but also includes some red meat and fish.

Other diets that fall under ‘plat-based’ include vegan, pescatarian and flexitarian.

So what is ‘plant-based’ and how might it benefit you?

What is plant-based?

The easiest way to consider plant-based is vegetarian.

But while the main focus of eating vegetarian is to avoid meat, the main focus of plant-based is to eat as many plants as possible, i.e. fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds.

Why is it beneficial?

The Mediterranean diet – a good example of eating primarily plant-based – has been shown in both large population studies and randomized clinical trials to reduce the risk of heart disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, certain cancers (specifically colon, breast, and prostate cancer) and depression, says Harvard Health.

Plant-based diets are often higher in fibre, which is linked with bowel cancer prevention (the opposite is said of red and processed meats).

Fibre can also help with weight management.

What to be wary of

Anyone who eats primarily vegan or vegetarian may need to supplement if they are not reaching nutrient targets, namely iron and B12.

Also, many plant-based products that are versions of fake meat or cheese may appear to be healthier on the surface but are often laden with salt or other processed ingredients.

If you’re going to give plant-based a try, it’s a good idea to learn some new recipes rather than rely on meat substitutes.

Plant-based foods list

  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Whole grains (brown rice, brown pasta, quinoa, barley, oats, buckwheat, bulgur)
  • Legumes (chickpeas, kidney beans, black beans, peas, lentils and more)
  • Nuts and seeds (almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and more)
  • Plant-based proteins (tofu and tempeh)

Millions of customers to get up to £2,000 in water bill compensation under first shake-up in DECADES

MILLIONS of water customers are set to benefit from huge hikes to compensation levels for the first time since 2000.

New regulations from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) will mandate water companies to provide higher, compulsory compensation to both customers and businesses.

Water bills and British banknotes.
The reforms have been welcomed by consumer groups, such as the Consumer Council for Water

Compensation is typically offered to homes and businesses impacted by issues such as supply interruptions, sewer flooding, and low water pressure.

However, the current compensation rates have remained unchanged since the turn of the millennium.

Under the new rates, some customers will be eligible to receive £2,000 automatically if they are affected by a sewage flood, an increase from the current £1,000.

Issues such as low water pressure could see payments rise to a whopping £250, compared to the current £25.

Following a supply interruption in South Staffordshire last month due to a burst water main, compensation for residents was not compulsory.

However, under the new regulations, this incident could have warranted payments of £150 for households and £300 for businesses.

The government will also broaden the scope where compensation becomes mandatory.

For example, compensation will now be required for any households issued with boil notices, typically given when drinking water quality falls below safe levels.

Compensation will also be due when water suppliers fail to conduct meter readings or installations as scheduled.

These changes, which follow a public consultation showing overwhelming support, aim to hold water companies accountable and improve service quality.

Environment Secretary Steve Reed stated that these measures aim to provide better compensation for customers who have been “too often let down by water companies.”

He said: “We are clear that the public deserves better compensation when things go wrong, so I’m taking action to make sure that happens.

“This is another step forward in our plans to reform the water sector so it serves customers and the environment better.”

The reforms have been welcomed by consumer groups, such as the Consumer Council for Water (CCW), who believe the increased payments and expanded scope will incentivise water companies to improve their services.

What compensation is increasing?

COMPENSATION for several common problems will see substantial increases:

  • Low water pressure: Payments could reach £250, a tenfold increase from the current £25.
  • Internal sewer flooding: Compensation could exceed £2,000, compared to the current maximum of £1,000.
  • Supply interruptions: Households could receive £150 and businesses £300, as exemplified by a recent incident in South Staffordshire.
  • “Do Not Drink” notices: A compulsory payment of £220 for households and £440 for businesses would be triggered, unlike the voluntary £30 offered by Thames Water to residents in Bramley, Sussex, earlier this year.
  • Water quality incidents: Customers affected by incidents like the cryptosporidium outbreak in Brixham, Devon, could receive at least £10 per 24 hours, potentially totalling over £500 for extended events.

Mike Keil, chief executive of the CCW, said: “The increased payment levels when things go wrong, alongside fewer reasons for companies to avoid making payments, means that there are far greater incentives for water companies to get things right the first time.

“The overhaul of these standards marks a step forward in improving consumer protection and repairing fractured trust in the water sector.”

It’s worth bearing in mind that the changes are expected to come into force next year once the legislation has been passed.

They’re part of a larger government plan to overhaul the water sector, including stronger regulations and potential criminal liability for water company executives who break the law.

COMPENSATION ALREADY DUE

At the beginning of October, water companies were ordered to return £157.6million to customers after failing to meet pollution targets.

Each year, Ofwat evaluates the performance of England and Wales‘ 17 largest water and wastewater companies against key targets, including sewer flooding, supply interruptions, and water leaks.

For the second consecutive year, no company attained the highest rating, although four companies demonstrated improvement compared to the previous year.

As a result, millions of customers at 13 water companies will see their bills slashed next year as the watchdog issues fresh penalties.

The penalties for each water firm are as follows:

  • Thames Water £56.8million
  • Anglian Water: £38.1million
  • Yorkshire Water: £36million
  • Southern Water: £31.9million
  • Welsh Water: £24.1million
  • South West Water: £17.4million
  • South East Water: £8million
  • Wessex Water: £5.3million
  • Affinity Water: £5.2million
  • Bristol Water: £1.9million
  • Portsmouth Water: £1.1million
  • South Staffs Water: £700,000
  • Hafren Dyfrdwy: £200,000

The regulator said that the exact amount that will be returned to customers will be finalised on December 19 and applied to bills from April 2025.

Water companies were set stretching targets for 2020-25 to deliver better outcomes, for both customers and the environment.

Where they fall short on these, the regulator imposes performance penalties resulting in customers being charged less than they would be the following billing year.

Performance penalties have totalled more than £430million since 2020.

Last year, Ofwat forced through bill reductions worth £177.6million.

On Thursday (December 19), Ofwat will confirm how much water companies are allowed to hike bills over the next five years.

In October, water companies requested increases of 40%, adding an extra £176 to a typical household’s costs and bringing the total to £615 per year.

The regulator said at the time: “We will consider this additional expenditure request as part of our final determinations.”

What water bill support is available?

IT'S always worth checking if you qualify for a discount or extra support to help pay your water bill.

Over two million households who qualify to be on discounted social water tariffs aren’t claiming the savings provided, according to the Consumer Council for Water (CCW).

Only 1.3million households are currently issued with a social water tariff – up 19% from the previous year.

And the average household qualifying for the discounted water rates can slash their bills by £160 a year.

Every water company has a social tariff scheme which can help reduce your bills if you’re on a low income and the CCW is calling on customers to take advantage before bills rise in April.

Who’s eligible for help and the level of support offered varies depending on your water company.

Most suppliers also have a pot of money to dish out to thousands of customers who are under pressure from rising costs – and you don’t have to pay it back.

These grants can be worth hundreds of pounds offering a vital lifeline when faced with daunting water bills.

The exact amount you can get depends on where you live and your supplier, as well as your individual circumstances.

Many billpayers across the country could also get help paying off water debts through a little-known scheme and even get the balance written off.

Companies match the payments eligible customers make against the debt on their accounts to help clear it sooner.

If you’re on a water meter but find it hard to save water as you have a large family or water-dependent medical condition, you may be able to cap your bills through the WaterSure scheme.

Bills are capped at the average amount for your supplier, so the amount you could save will vary.

The Consumer Council for Water estimates that bills are reduced by £307 on average through the scheme.

It Takes Two host Janette Manrara sparks new Strictly feud rumours with Tasha Ghouri after fans spot clue

STRICTLY fans have claimed Janette Manrara snubbed Tasha Ghouri in her tribute post to Aljaž Škorjanec after they made the BBC final.

It Takes Two host Janette sparked a debate after failing to mention Tasha in a heartfelt message to her husband Aljaž.

Janette, who quit the show in 2021 to become the host of Strictly spin-off It Takes Two, shared an emotional Instagram post praising Aljaz for his “incredible” comeback series on Strictly Come Dancing.

However, fans were quick to notice that Aljaz’s celebrity dance partner, Tasha, was notably absent from the gushing message, leading to speculation of tension behind the scenes.

In the post, the mum wrote: “I have no words to express how IMMENSELY proud I am of @aljazskorjanec this series.

“What a comeback year!

“You worked incredibly hard, spent time away from home and our little family, pushed through missing Lyra as much as you did, and did it all with class and grace making your wife and daughter and yourself very proud.

“You were AMAZING last night and every single week. I am so very happy for you, as are your family, friends and team. Now…. Let’s go home and cuddle.

“I’ve missed you, and I love you.”

While Janette’s words were filled with love and admiration for Aljaz, there was no mention of Tasha, who Aljaz partnered with throughout the season.

Fans quickly took to the comments, questioning if it was a snub.

One follower wrote: “It may have been nice for you to mention tasha in this post too?”

However, another replied: “Should she? She is talking about how she has missed her husband Tasha doesn’t have to be mentioned.”

One more fan moaned: “It’s like you have watched alijaz & tasha like a hawk….now this post not even a mention for tasha just you you you”

A third wrote: “Tasha and aljaz were my winners however but of a snub towards tasha”.

It comes after Tasha’s incredible performance in Saturday’s final saw her become the show’s highest scoring celebrity ever — taking the title from singer Ashley Roberts.

The Love Island star, who was born deaf and wears a cochlear implant, has cherished being able to represent her community on the BBC dance show.

She described getting to the final as “magical” and praised Aljaž for getting her so far.

She wrote alongside a post on social media: “Strictly after 13 weeks thank you, when I say doing this show has just been so magical I can’t even put it into words & surprising me with my brother flying in from Australia!!!

“This was extra special having him there watching the final, thank you so much for making this happen.”

Watch moment Miranda Hart screams in horror as she’s covered in hot tea as dog throws Alan Carr’s podcast into chaos

MIRANDA Hart screamed in horror after getting covered in hot tea during Alan Carr’s most recent podcast episode.

Chatty Man Alan, 48, was interviewing Call The Midwife star Miranda, 52, on the latest episode of his Life’s A Beach podcast.

The comedians were in hysterics[/caption]

Miranda and Alan could be seen sitting on a sofa while chatting away for the podcast episode when a dog emerged and caused total chaos.

As the two comedians yapped away, Miranda picked up a cup of tea and started to have a sip.

“Come and sit here,” Alan could be heard saying to his dog, Rita, whom he rescued.

Rita didn’t listen to Alan, with the comedian saying: “She’s deaf,” before he and Miranda began their conversation again.

Just as Miranda started to drink her piping hot cup of tea, Alan said “Come here now” and then his dog jumped across the sofa and onto her lap.

As the dog jumped across Miranda’s lap, the comedian spilled her tea and it went down her front – covering her top and lap.

Both Miranda and Alan burst out in laughter, with the two stars in hysterics.

“Oh no! Rita’s just thrown a cup of tea over Miranda,” Alan exclaimed before he stood up and walked out of the shot.

“Oh my god,” Alan added, before asking Miranda if the hot tea was “scolding her” as she held a tea towel on her stomach.

‘I THINK IT’S FINE’

“This is the worst beginning to a podcast ever,” Alan exclaimed before Miranda explained how the tea had gone all over her.

Alan then said that his dog clearly “hates Miranda”, adding: “She’s never jumped up and thrown tea!”.

Miranda then expressed her moment of panic when she had to stop and figure out if she had “genuinely burnt herself” because it was “piping hot tea”.

“I think it’s fine,” she declared as Alan offered to pay her dry cleaning bill and then asked if she wanted another shirt to put on.

The clip was shared on Alan’s Instagram page, with fans of the comedian quick to comment on the shocking clip of the pair recording the podcast episode.

Alan Carr's career to date

Alan Carr is a household name, but how did the comedian get his start?

  • Alan began pursuing a career in stand-up comedy in the early 2000s, moving up to Manchester from Northampton and regularly performing at the city’s Comedy Store. He was even named City Life’s Newcomer Of The Year in 2001.
  • He then became a regular fixture on the small screen following stints on Jimmy Carr‘s beloved panel show 8 Out of 10 Cats and the documentary series The Law of the Playground between 2005 to 2006.
  • Alan went on to find further fame as the co-host of Channel 4’s The Friday Night Project, which ran from 2006-2009 alongside shamed comic Justin Lee Collins, before going solo and fronting Alan Carr’s Celebrity Ding Dong in 2008.
  • Since then, Alan has fronted coverage of some of the UK’s biggest events, such as Crufts in 2018 and the Royal Variety Show in 2021, as well as appearing on an episode of The Great Celebrity Bake Off and becoming a regular judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race.
  • Alan now fronts a number of beloved series, including The Italian Job – a renovation show he hosts with Amanda Holden – and Interior Design Masters – a reality competition show that pits amateur designers against each other.
  • In 2023, Alan wrote and starred in the autobiographical drama Changing Ends which depicts his young life growing up in Northampton in the 1980s. The series was an instant hit and returned to ITV for a second series in 2024.

FANS REACT TO HILARIOUS CLIP

“Maybe Rita was excited to see Miranda,” said one person underneath the clip shared on Instagram.

Another person then said: “GASP !!!!!!”

“She’s a national treasure and that dog is a mess,” penned a third.

A fourth then wrote: “Omg the dog is on a mad one and spilt a cuppa aaha, i hope she’s okay tho lol.”

“Scalded one of our national treasures, how very dare you Alan Carr,” joked a fifth.

While someone else asked: “Is the dog OK??????”

Bookies are sure comedian Chris McCausland will be one of the names on next year’s I’m A Celebrity lineup.

After lifting the Glitterball Trophy on Saturday, Chris is now 4/1 to appear in the jungle.

Lee Astley, a spokesperson for BetIdeas, said: “Chris McCausland stole a lot of hearts during his Strictly campaign, and the public are now wondering when we’ll next see this year’s Glitterball Trophy recipient on our screens.

“The comedian has been given odds of 4/1 to try his hand in the I’m A Celebrity camp this time next year, with stints on both Celebrity Traitors and Celebrity Big Brother live chances at 6/1 and 8/1 respectively.

“There have been whispers that the comedian may give acting a go with a regular role in a TV soap opera priced at 7/1, with a major role in a West End show a more unlikely prospect at 12/1.”

Chris, 47, who began to lose his sight aged 16, made Strictly history as the first blind contestant to take the title in the BBC One programme’s 20-year history.

Speaking after his win, he said: “It’s astonishing. I don’t know what to say.

“I honestly thought I could go out in the first week or two. We have just lasted and lasted.

He thanked his partner Dianne Buswell and said: “She’s positivity, she’s belief, and she’s honestly just one of the easiest people to be funny with.

“She deserves this so much. She’s just honestly one of the easiest people to be funny with the other and unless she changes her number, she’s stuck with me.”

My state has the highest electric bills in the country but I never run my heat – all thanks to my six winterizing tricks

A savvy saver (right) has the tips to stay warm without breaking the bank[/caption]

“It’s not as bad as it sounds,” assured budgeting expert Bradley (@baddie.brad) in a recent video detailing the tricks on TikTok.

He showed the electricity bill cost for his apartment in December 2023 with the same moves, and it was only about $40, a total very good in general and also for Connecticut, which Bradley said has some of the highest energy costs of any state.

For perspective, the average electricity bill nationwide in December is around $80, according to data from Inspire Clean Energy.

Still, that number varies greatly based on location, living space size, and other factors.

Bradley still managed to cut it in half with the frugal methodology.

BLANKETS AND BLANKETS

The first move those looking to not use their heating this winter to save money should make, according to him, was to “winterize” their bed.

That means layering the bed through several blankets for added warmth.

Bradley could be seen stacking at least five blankets and two sheets, making sure he’d be kept appropriately heated.

This was especially important for the evening hours as the outside temperature dropped.

LAYERED CLOTHING

Secondly, Bradley advised that those who wanted to keep from using the HVAC system wear several layers of clothing.

This could be through hoodies, sweaters, or various outer layers, as well as warmer under-layers and socks.

Certain times of the day might require the layers more than others.

At night in bed, the blankets will make up for less clothing, so you’re not wearing sweaters to bed and waking up sweating.

LET THE SUN IN

Bradley also recommended that homeowners or renters open up their blinds this winter to let the sun in to heat the space.

Thermostat Ranges to Save Money

  • Winter
    • At Home: 68 degrees
    • Away/Asleep: 60 to 65 degrees
    • Variable depending but always seven to 10 lower than normal setting
  • Summer
    • At Home: 78 degrees
    • Away: 85 degrees
    • Asleep: 82 degrees
    • Variable depending but always seven to 10 degrees higher than setting

It provides an added bit of warmth that you might not realize is helping, but it sure is.

“The sun is such a natural and free way to warm up my place, especially because I live in a small studio — it actually warms it up quite nicely,” Bradley noted in the clip.

“Shoutout to the sun, we don’t give it enough credit.”

COOKING ADVANTAGE

Those who cook a lot of meals at home can also benefit from the heat that the stovetop or oven gives off.

Leaving the appliances on for a brief period when finished cooking could help warm you up easily.

Bradley also recommended taking a hand towel and blowing the heat from the stovetop or oven around a little bit in the room.

It’s especially helpful for those living in similarly smaller spaces or studio apartments.

DRAFT AREAS/FRONT DOOR

Bradley also said he tapes up cracks in the windowsill or the bottom gap in the patio door to prevent cool drafts from blowing in from outside.

That way, all the warm air can be kept inside the space.

The savings influencer also sometimes opens the front door of his apartment into the hallway (which is heated by the complex) to let the warm air flow in for a short while.

With all these hacks, Bradley said only as a last resort does he turn on the heat, for potentially 10 minutes at a time, while blowing it around with a towel, to get the space warmer.

“That’s how I survive winters the frugal way,” he told viewers.

There are also several affordable heating gadgets you could pick up from retail giants like Walmart and Target this year to help with energy costs.

Walmart’s selling a top-rated item for under $10.

A heated blanket with multiple uses is also going for just $36.99 at Target.
