Fury as hugely popular attraction loved by families is AXED by council as locals cry ‘the heart of our city is gone’
LOCALS were left gutted after the council scrapped a beloved family attraction, after promises for it to be returned.
Derby City Council confirmed there are “no plans” to resurrect the city’s popular attraction after it was axed in July 2019.
The Derby Cascade in Market Square will not be switched back on[/caption] Councillor Nadien Peatfield announced there were “no plans” to bring it back in the foreseeable future[/caption] It has been a staple monument in the town centre for decades[/caption] Locals have fond memories of the features and expressed their sadness over its closure[/caption]The iconic Market Place waterfall was commissioned in 1995, and quickly became a recognisable feature of Derby Promenade.
Tory administration estimated it would cost £32,000 a year to keep going in 2017, and two years later it was closed to be “redesigned.”
Chaddesden resident Mary Hart told Derbyshire Live: “It’s typical, isn’t it?
“We can’t even afford to have a bit of water running in one of the busiest places in town.”
Mary used to take her grandchildren out to the waterfall to play during the summer months.
The concrete slab remains in the centre of town but with no water flowing through the it, leaving an eerie concrete slab.
She added: “I just laugh nowadays, I have stopped caring.
“It’s the young people who will miss out, they won’t know the Derby we know, and that’s sad, but what can we do?”
The waterfall was switched off in 2016 for maintenance costs and vandalism fees, but after immense pushback from townsfolk, the water began flowing again in 2018.
Unfortunately the year after it was turned off again with a council spokesperson announcing it was being re-designated as a “confined space due to restricted access.”
The spokesperson added: “Work is underway to resolve this issue as a matter of urgency.”
For the last half a decade the treasured waterfall has remained dry as a bone, and finally the council has addressed the issue.
To the dismay of locals, Councillor Nadien Peatfield announced there were “no plans” to switch the waterfall back on again after the five-year wait
The once cherished attraction is now covered with grime and bird droppings and is home to a flock of pigeons.
Without the water flowing through it, locals struggle to see the point of the feature in the centre of their city.
“It just gets dirtier and dirtier,” Sarah Young, from Mackworth, complained.
“It seems to be more run down whenever I look at it.
“They need to fix it soon – or at least give it a regular wash – otherwise, you may as well just knock it down.
“It has absolutely no purpose.”
The Derby Cascade, designed by William Pye, is a distinctive memory for many locals who grew up in the area.
The 3.5m high waterfall was initially erected after a competition organised by the Public Art Commissions Agency.
Behind the cascade there is enough space to walk behind the curtain of water, offering the sensation of wandering behind a waterfall.
Adam Kelly remembers the water feature fondly from his childhood, and thinks turning it back on would “put a bit of life back in the town.”
He said: “I was one of the kids who grew up using the waterfall, running around and getting wet.
“My grandparents couldn’t stand having to dry us all off before getting the bus, but my cousins and I used to enjoy it so much”, he chuckled.
“I’m not an expert on things like this, but I suppose it isn’t too much trouble to turn it back on, but with the cost of bills nowadays, you never know.”
While he would love to see it open he understands it’s not a priority.
“We’re all used to it now, and it’s too late to turn it on for Christmas, so maybe by the summer, they could have it sorted.”
When it was first designed, the waterfall was met with mixed reactions as many had requested a traditional fountain.
Locals and visitors then become attached to the unique feature and are devasted to hear it won’t return, despite attempts to make the Market Place the new “cultural heart of the city.”
Councillor Peatfield said: “The Market Place is a key part of our plans to create a new cultural heart of the city and we continue to work closely with our preferred strategic development partners, Vinci Developments UK and ION developments, on their masterplan, which includes the Market Place and areas surrounding it.”
The Sun has reached out to Derby City Council for a comment.

GREGG Wallace has slashed the prices on his healthy eating website, as he attempts to cash in before his MasterChef axe.
The Masterchef star has told friends he expects to be sacked following an investigation into his alleged sexual harassment and groping.
Gregg Wallace has slashed the prices on his healthy eating website, as he attempts to cash in before his MasterChef axe[/caption] Gregg’s website shares tips on how to lose weight and keep it off[/caption]And several women have come forward about his behaviour, prompting the review.
Now, over on Gregg’s health website where he offers various membership plans, £40 has been slashed off the annual plans, which were originally £90.
This is a new development on the website that occurred this week.
A pop up on his site reads: “get £40 off the annual subscription. At less than £1 a week, it’s the easiest decision you’ll make for your health this year. Join us today and transform your life with GreggWallace.Health!”
MasterChef’s Gregg launched his website to help people lose weight and keep it off.
The first page sees photos of the TV star, as well as Gregg’s story on how he lost five stone which, he tells visitors “isn’t by dieting.”
The price slash comes as Wallace stopped using his pricey legal team as he resigned himself to the MasterChef sack.
The under-fire presenter has also turned down crisis-publicity teams in the weeks after several women complained he groped or harassed them.
The BBC1 show’s production firm Banijay UK launched a probe last month and Wallace, 60, has strongly denied any wrongdoing.
But those close to him said he understood his position on MasterChef was no longer tenable.
A source said: “Gregg’s conceded he has lost everything. To put it bluntly, he’s told people, ‘I’m f***ed’.
“He came out swinging but he has quietly conceded that he knows his time on MasterChef is over and that he will be stepping aside.
“He has contested the sexual allegations and insisted any jokes he made were just jokes. He said he never meant to cause any offence.
Gregg Wallace - MasterChef scandal in Brief
GREGG Wallace has stepped down from his MasterChef hosting role after a probe into alleged inappropriate behaviour. But what's the situation?
Regular MasterChef host Gregg Wallace is currently the subject of a probe after an investigation was launched into his alleged misconduct over a number of years.
Gregg has been accused of making sexual remarks to 13 colleagues including Beeb anchor Kirsty Wark – accusations he denies.
The 60-year-old has now stepped away from the BBC show while historical misconduct allegations against him are investigated.
Yet the former greengrocer spoke out on social media to blast the “women of a certain age” who he claimed were behind the allegations.
The cooking show’s production company, Banijay UK, has said law firm Lewis Silkin would lead the investigation into Wallace’s alleged misconduct.
“Gregg has been under a huge amount of pressure since the allegations came to light and tried his best to fight his corner.
“The BBC and Banijay UK have now spoken to a number of different individuals and they know they must be seen to take action.
“Gregg knows the time will come when he has to step aside and as much as that pains him, it seems he has come to terms with it.”

MAX George has revealed he will undergo emergency heart surgery.
The 36-year-old singer and actor took to social media to update fans with a photo of himself surrounded by wires and medical equipment while giving a thumbs-up.
Max said he needs to be fitted with a pacemaker[/caption]Max was admitted to hospital last week with heart issues and has been undergoing tests as doctors investigate what’s wrong.
In his latest post, The Wanted singer explained that a recent CT scan showed concerning results.
He said: “Had a little day trip today. Full cat scan on my heart. Not something I’d choose to do again!”
Max went on to share that he has been diagnosed with a 2:1 heart block, a condition where the heart’s electrical signals are disrupted.
He added his heart rate has remained stubbornly low for almost a week.
“Unfortunately my heart rate hasn’t picked up at all in almost a week,” he wrote.
“Because of this, we don’t have too much time to wait, so it looks like I’m going to be in surgery way quicker than the doctors first thought. I may even be home for Christmas!”
Max admitted the situation has been frightening, particularly over the past few nights.
“Still a pretty scary time right now and the last few nights have been really rough, but I wanted to say that I’m absolutely humbled by all your messages of support,” he added.
“Both people I know and those I don’t. It’s given me a much-needed boost and my family have been overwhelmed with support, which means more to me than anything.”
Fans and well-wishers flooded his post with messages of support, hoping for a speedy recovery as Max prepares for surgery.
One of his followers shared: “You’re so strong and amazing Max I believe you will be just fine. That’s the inner Manc in you sending you all the love and positivity.”
Max previously told fans he thinks he will be fitted with a pacemaker.
He said: “My heart rate is really, really low, which they are monitoring 24/7. Everyone has been amazing but the waiting bit is tough, do you know what I mean?
“But yeah, it is just one of those things unfortunately and whatever I get I have just got to get on with it really and we are hoping pacemaker. Pacemaker is good.”
His shock hospital admission comes two years after his Wanted bandmate and best pal Tom Parker died of brain cancer aged just 33.
Max went sober after he was told by a doctor his liver count was low following years of boozing on tour.

The exact number of daily steps you need to hit to slash your risk of depression revealed
FOR years, 10,000 steps a day has been hailed as the golden standard for staying active.
But now, a groundbreaking review suggests far fewer steps are needed – when trying to tackle depression at least.
Physical exercise has long been known to play a vital role in improving mental health and wellbeing.
However, this is the first study to investigate the benefit of step counts and find a link between the two.
Scientists from Spain analysed 33 studies involving nearly 100,000 participants.
They found that taking 7,000 steps a day reduces the likelihood of depression by 31 per cent.
The risk also decreased by a further nine per cent for every 10,000 steps a day, the study published in the journal Jama Network Open, found.
Here in the UK, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem each year, and depression is one of the most common.
Approximately 4.5 million people are currently living with the debilitating disease.
We all go through periods of feeling sad, angry or withdrawn from the world.
But with depression, these feelings persist over very long periods, to the extent that they significantly disrupt someone’s quality of life.
Participants in the study wore pedometers to track their daily steps and completed questionnaires to assess their mental health.
“Our results showed significant associations between higher numbers of daily steps and fewer depressive symptoms as well as lower prevalence and risk of depression in the general adult population,” the scientists from the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha wrote.
They said encouraging people to do at least 7,000 steps a day would be a good public health initiative “that has the potential to prevent depression”.
Experts caution that the findings don’t prove causation, but the study highlights the potential benefits of encouraging people to meet daily step targets.
“While it shows a clear association between higher step counts and lower depression symptoms, we can’t definitively say that walking more reduces depression, as most studies only looked at one point in time,” said Dr Brendon Stubbs, from King’s College London, who was not involved in the study.
“However, the findings align well with existing evidence about physical activity’s benefits for mental health.
“The encouraging message is that even modest increases in daily steps day can potentially reduce the risk of future depression.
Signs and symptoms of depression
You may feel:
- Continuously low or sad
- Hopeless
- Tearful
- Anxious
You may have:
- No motivation or interest in things, such as hobbies
- Suicidal thoughts
- Lack of appetite and energy
- Disturbed sleep
- Urge to avoid friends or socialising
If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health problem, the following organisations have more information or can help:
Mind: mind.org.uk, 0300 123 3393
Rethink Mental Illness: rethink.org, 0300 5000 927
Samaritans: samaritans.org, 116 123
“We really do however need long-term randomised trials to test if this is causal.”
The goal of walking 10,000 steps a day became a social phenomenon in the mid-60s when a Japanese tech company launched the first-ever step-counting watch.
Since then, numerous studies have shown that this once-arbitrary target actually holds some value.
A 2023 US study revealed that walking between 6,000 and 9,000 steps a day can slash the risk of heart disease by up to 50 per cent compared to taking just 2,000 steps.
Meanwhile, another US team found earlier this year that 6,000 steps a day is the sweet spot for reducing the risk of an early death.
Katie Price’s eye-watering five-figure panto salary revealed as double bankrupt star claws back cash
KATIE Price is being paid an eye-watering five-figure salary for her latest pantomime gig, The Sun can exclusively reveal.
The former glamour model was declared bankrupt for a second time in March over an unpaid tax bill of £761,994.05.
But Katie, 46, won’t have to pinch the pennies this Christmas as The Sun has learned she’s landed a £50,000 payday for teaming up with pal Kerry Katona in a production of Cinderella at Northwich Memorial Court.
She and Kerry, 44, are playing the wicked step-sisters in the panto, but Katie’s fee is anything but evil.
An insider said: “Katie knows her worth and she won’t take a penny less.
“Despite everything she’s a shrewd negotiator and her name still has some pull when it comes to booking gigs.
“The panto organisers are thrilled with the response to Katie and Kerry being in the show so far and in their eyes it’s money well spent.”
Shortly after it was announced the duo would be involved and tickets for the production went on sale in September it was revealed Cinderella had broken box office records.
A statement on the official Instagram for the theatre read: “Since our casting news broke earlier this evening, we have sold the highest number of tickets that we’ve ever sold in a single day during our last 14 years in Northwich!
“Book your tickets soon before the best seats go!
www.brioentertainment.org.”
Mum-of-five Katie was declared bankrupt in 2019, after it was revealed that she owed £3.2 million to creditors, as well as HMRC, her mortgage company and various small businesses.
Katie was also served an eviction notice from her Mucky Mansion following her second bankruptcy.
It comes after Kerry was sent home from a panto rehearsal after slurring her words as she struggled with medication after a car accident.
She told fans in a video posted on social media that she had been sent home for slurring her words due to taking strong painkillers.
She said: “Yesterday I got sent home from panto. I can barely remember coming home.
“I can’t say white rabbits anyway; for those of you who are not aware, I crashed my car. I also cracked my ribs and got put on some heavy medication.
“I do not like taking things that make me feel like I’m not in control but I’ve been put on strong medication.”
Katie Price's missing millions
At the peak of her career Katie had an estimated fortune of £45m, thanks to her lucrative modelling career, book deals, and TV appearances.
The cash-strapped mum-of-five was first declared bankrupt in 2019 over unpaid debts of £3.2 million.
In a podcast interview earlier this year, she blamed her exes who include Peter Andre, Alex Reid and Kieran Hayler and lawyers for her money woes.
She insisted that funding her exes’ lavish lifestyles with cars, watches, luxury holidays and homes left her finances in tatters.
She added: “I went through a breakdown, this is how mine started – lawyers and exes, that is my bankruptcy thing.
“And obviously a bit of HMRC.
“When I had my breakdown, if anyone has been depressed… I don’t know if you’ve ever had depression.
“It starts with depression and you just want to sleep all day and not talk to anyone, the phone would ring and you wouldn’t answer it.’
In March, Katie was declared bankrupt for a second time over an unpaid tax bill of £761,994.05.
The demand for payment was made by HMRC last October.
Katie was due to give evidence about her finances at the High Court but failed to turn up – holidaying in Cyprus with her new man JJ Slater instead.
Her Mucky Mansion was a bomb site for years after it was burgled, flooded and swamped by an overflowing septic tank.
She finally moved out at the end of May and is renting a four-bed mansion in Sussex.
World Darts Championship sees first MAJOR shock as seeded former semi-finalist James Wade exits in his first match
JAMES WADE has been dumped out of the PDC World Darts Championship at the first hurdle.
The former World No. 2 crashed out after a straight-set drubbing by in-form Jermaine Wattimena.
James Wade is out of the 2025 PDC World Darts[/caption] The 41-year-old has made the semi-finals four times at Ally Pally[/caption] Jermaine Wattimena (left) powered to a 3-0 win on Monday in the second-round match[/caption]Wade, known as The Machine, was the first seed to crash out of the tournament last year and was hoping to avoid the same fate.
But he was never in the second round contest as The Machine Gun produced a dominant performance in front of a capacity Ally Pally crowd.
Wattimena averaged 99.17 as he cruised to a 3-0 victory, dropping just two legs in the process.
It extends Wade’s long wait for a PDC world title, with the 41-year-old still to make it past the semi-final stage at darts’ premier event.
Wade has reached the semis on four separate occasions, with his last final four visit in 2022.
He admitted earlier this month the popular tournament can “ruin Christmas.”
Wade told Sky Sports: “I enjoy it – ish. It’s just Christmas though, isn’t it?
“I don’t want to be playing darts at Christmas.

“I want to be at home. Yeah, it kind of ruins Christmas. You’re robbed of Christmas.
“I’ve got young children now so I actually do like Christmas. I genuinely do like it. I love seeing their little faces and their little eyes light up.”
Wattimena has hit form late in 2024 and has now won 8 of his last 10 matches since early November.
The Dutchman was the runner-up at this year’s European Championship after reaching his first-ever major television final.
He will now face either Wesley Plaisier or Peter Wright in the third round.
