Sophie Wessex weeps as she meets women raped in exchange for food & water on harrowing trip to war victims in Chad

THE Duchess of Edinburgh made a historic trip to meet war victims at a refugee camp on the border of Sudan – becoming the first member of the royal family ever to visit the stricken region.

Sophie Wessex wept as she heard the “devastating and appalling” stories of women who have been subjected to horrific sexual assaults, carried out by soldiers who regularly use rape as a terror tactic in the war which shows no sign of reaching an end.

To escape the daily brutalities, the women fled their homes to the Adré refugee camp in neighbouring Chad, Central Africa, where they met with Sophie and shared their harrowing accounts.

Sophie could not hold back tears as she separately embraced five female survivors she met at a hospital after they had described the atrocities they had been subjected to.

The women told how they had been brutally raped in exchange for food and water.

They also chillingly revealed their daughters were being subjected to similar, heinous sexual assaults.

After kneeling on a rug in a tent with the women as she listened to their accounts in private, Sophie, 56, then spoke to a small group of press outside with tears streaming down her face.

With her hands still trembling, she said: “I daren’t even describe to you what they’ve been doing to children.”

Clutching a tissue to wipe her eyes, the Duchess took a few minutes to compose herself and said: “It’s not just about the sexual violence, which is horrific because they’re having to exchange food and water for sex, and if they don’t they kill them.

“These women have no option but to leave.

“And even then they’re lucky. If they can get away, because some of the villages and towns that they come from, they can’t even leave their houses any more.

“If they leave their houses they get killed.”

Asked by The Sun about a meeting she had earlier with a “silent” young girl on the Sudanese border, Sophie, added: “It’s heartbreaking. You have no idea what they have been through.

“That little girl was so silent and it worried me because of what I’ve just heard now.

“It really worried me. Because I haven’t shared with you some of what they told me in there, which was why I was quite wobbly when I came in.

“I can’t share – I don’t think you would even want to print it in your publications, to be honest with you.

“But what they do to the children is… I can’t even use the words.

“So I can only assume that they are young.

“That little girl that we were talking to – now that I’ve spoken to them [the women] I worry what she has either encountered or what she has witnessed. Because what they have all witnessed is complete atrocity.”

One of the five women Sophie spoke to told how she had seen bodies piled “like a wall” as her family escaped her home city of Geneina, a city in Darfur that has witnessed some of the worst recorded atrocities of the war.

The Adré refugee camp has a population of 230,000, the same as Portsmouth.

It is home to the main border crossing from Chad into Darfur, a crossing that sends vital aid to those in the war-torn region.

It is at risk of being closed by the Sudanese government next month because they allege weapons are being smuggled across to help their enemy the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

During her visit, Sophie, who has two children, Lady Louise Windsor, 20 and James the Earl of Wessex, 16, made a trip to the crossing – where active combat has been reported as little as 12-miles away – so that she could meet the people and hear their stories first-hand.

She welcomed a family of eight as they crossed the border on a pony-drawn cart.

On it was a mum, Hadidah Abdullah, clutching her nine-month-old baby Bayena.

Hadidah said: “They came to our house, sometimes they beat us. My husband had all his money stolen.

“If we went out to the farm we would be beaten too.”

The fearless Duchess’s decision to journey to one of the most dangerous corners of the world – an area where the Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises against all travel – was made to ensure the dire situation is not overlooked.

After arriving in Chad’s capital N’Djamena on Saturday, Sophie took an early morning flight on Sunday to Farchana on the other side of the country.

The region is such a hotspot for conflict and violence, that she was then escorted not only by Royal Security detail, but also by an armed military protection team in a motorcade of 18 vehicles on a 90-minute journey over rough terrain.

News of her three-day visit was kept tightly under wraps to ensure maximum safety.

The media was banned from reporting on the trip until Sophie had safely departed Chad at the time of this publication.

But with the world’s attention on the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, the Duchess was determined to not allow the stories of Sudan’s innocent victims go unheard.

Experts warn that Sudan, which is barely functioning after civil war broke out between the government and paramilitary group the Rapid Support Forces, could soon be facing one of the world’s worst famines in decades.

The residents of Adré have welcomed the refugees coming across the border – but Chad is one of the poorest countries in the world, and already limited resources are being stretched to breaking point.

Up to 1000 refugees arrive at the transit camp every day.

The homes they hurriedly erect consist of sticks and leaves covered with tarps or plastic sacks.

The Sudanese military previously closed the border at Adré, eastern Chad, in February because they alleged weapons were being smuggled through the border to their enemy.

The closure strangled the flow of aid trucks carrying life-saving supplies to those in need in Darfur at the same time as the country faced the deadly famine.

It was opened again in August after mounting international pressure and aid was able to cross, providing much-needed food supplies to the people facing starvation in the Darfur region.

But next month the crossing is due to shut to aid trucks, in what will be a disastrous setback for those in desperate need.

It is hoped that the international attention drawn by Sophie’s visit to the region could help to delay the reclosure.

Demonstrating her support for the displaced women, girls, men and boys, on Sunday the Duchess also called for further international commitment to help them in their plight.

The UK this year pledged £97million in aid to those impacted by the bloody conflict.

At a garden reception at the embassy in N’Djamena on Saturday evening, the Duchess said she hoped to “shine a light” on the situation in the region in the hope of gaining more support for those in dire need.

Sophie is no stranger to drawing attention to the situation of women and girls who have been impacted by conflict-related sexual violence.

She announced she would champion Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda and the UK’s Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI) on International Woman’s Day in 2019.

Since then, she has visited countries with ongoing issues, including Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Colombia, Iraq, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

She also visited Ukraine earlier this year.

But yesterday (SUN), in a heartfelt plea Sophie urged people to do more for the victims of the conflict in Sudan, she said: “It’s fallen from everybody’s consciousness, and I understand that because there are so many things that are going on in the world right now.

“So our attention is being led by other conflicts, and that’s understandable. But this is a human catastrophe that is vast and Chad is having to pick up the pieces when it can ill afford to do.

“They’re doing it with a good heart, and we need to help them to do more.”

According to medics in the Sudan region, the number of people killed in the conflict so far could be between 20,000 and 150,000.

LIFE ON THE CAMP

By Rachel Dale

THIS weekend Sophie made the 2,800-mile journey from her Bagshot Park home – a 120-room Grade-II listed mansion that she shares with Prince Edward and their two children – to the border of war-torn Sudan.

Life in the refugee camp couldn’t be more different than that of the UK.

The 227,000 residents live in unavoidable squalor, packed into hastily assembled shacks made from whatever was available, which are no match for the regular monsoons and blistering sun.

Children kick footballs through the dusty mazes of makeshift tents while seeking scraps of food, or anything they can find that might be worth the few pence it costs for a modest meal of wheat flour and groundnut

Eight-hour-long queues form around dribbling water taps in the morning, with women and children standing by their plastic water holders in the relentless 40-degree heat. Once they get to the tap they collect just enough water to cook one small meal, and maybe wash their babies.

Survival is the only thing on anyone’s mind – children receive no schooling, and women struggle to find work. Those who do are forced to work back-breaking construction jobs or make bricks to sell to people in the nearby city.

But their undefeatable spirit is also clear to see. Many adults share a chat and a smile over 5p cups of tea and coffee outside temporary cafes, and there is a palpable community spirit.

A camp version of a high street has even been erected with wooden stalls selling groceries, onions and nuts are displayed on a red cloth.

There is a hairdresser with a broken mirror hanging from a plank of wood next to a crate that is used as a stool. And a sweet shop selling green lollipops and colourful balls of candy is manned by four small children who wave at passersby.

On the camp what little there is to spare is shared, whether that be a bar of soap, some water, or just a gossip and a joke.

But despite their stoicism, these people need help . Sophie’s mission is to shed light on the unbearable conditions those who have fled the conflict in Sudan are forced to ensure, and offer some hope to those who have lost everything.

Balkan breakfast TikTok trend: Reason doctors are advising against the viral way to start your day

THE Balkan breakfast trend is the latest fad to take TikTok by storm.

The trend encourages users to embrace tradition in their breakfasts and sees them eating raw ingredients.

The breakfast sees users eat raw ingredients

Experts have warned against eating such a large quantity of bread and meat
Kenty_Cook

The breakfast trend has divided opinions on the social media platform, with some users saying that they are eating more veg than ever and others calling it the worst breakfast ever.

Here’s everything you need to know about TikTok’s favourite breakfast.

The worst breakfast ever?

The Balkan Breakfast trend borrows a lot from the “girl dinner” trend, which sees users share their own unique, guilty-pleasure meals.

Where Balkan breakfasts from girl dinners, though, is that they focus on health and tradition.

Balkan breakfast ingredients include root vegetables, loaves of bread, kefir, cheese and cured meats.

Users often have their own take on the trend too, with some opting to add scrambled egg or sausage.

Others have taken their breakfast a step further, by ditching plates and eating straight off the table.

As a result, some TikTokers have branded it the “worst breakfast ever” but health advocates have a slightly different view.

Health benefits

Kristina Vavura, a Bulgarian dietitian, told Today.com: “Generally speaking, it’s a healthy trend.”

However, much of the benefits from the breakfast come simply from the fact that users are eating in the morning.

Kristina said that “starting the day off with something to eat can really help support healthier relationships with food”.

The focus on vegetables in the Balkan breakfast is also something that Kristina thinks will benefit TikTokers.

Foods like cereal and toast are not very nutritious, so the Balkan breakfast can encourage these important carbs to be eaten with fruit and vegetables.

The trend draws inspiration from many different Balkan countries
TikTok/Balkandad

Health concerns

The proportions of the Balkan breakfast can be over-the-top though, according to Kristina.

Some videos show social media users tucking into a pound-size slab of cheese, which is not a healthy way to start the day.

Kristina also warned against eating more cured meat, which is a big part of the Balkan breakfast trend.

She said that cured meats are considered to be a carcinogen by the World Health Organisation.

The meal is also extremely dense in fibre, which may cause problems with those who suffer with bloating and stomach discomfort.

The trend has been very divisive
TikTok/ansontheasian

How traditional is the Balkan breakfast?

The Balkans is a region in Europe which encompasses:

  • Albania
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Bulgaria
  • Greece
  • Kosovo
  • Montenegro
  • North Macedonia
  • European Turkey
  • The Romanian coast
  • Serbia
  • Croatia
  • Slovenia.

The Balkan breakfast trend does have some basis in reality, as raw vegetables, bread, cheese and cured meats are popular ingredients in the region.

However, the titanic proportions shown on TikTok are very exaggerated.

Also, according to Kristina, the trend takes a lot of inspiration from the Bulgarian breakfast known as banitsa.

Kristina, who is from Bulgaria herself, shared that the meal is a pastry paired with eggs, cheese and yogurt.

Donte DiVincenzo reveals exactly what was said in furious exchange with New York Knicks coach after bitter team exit

DONTE DiVincenzo was caught in a heated exchange with members of the New York Knicks on Sunday night.

The former Knick returned to Madison Square Garden for the first time since his trade to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The 27-year-old was part of a blockbuster three-team NBA deal earlier this month.

And he was back in New York City for a pre-season game Sunday.

The game ended with DiVincenzo and Knicks assistant coach Rick Brunson needing to be separated by New York star guard Jalen Brunson.

DiVincenzo was seemingly annoyed when he stepped up to shoot some free throws in the first quarter.

He was heard on the ESPN broadcast referencing “Thibs” – New York Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau.

Some fans online claimed he said “Thanks for the trade, Thibs.”

But the 27-year-old insisted after the game, “I didn’t say thanks for the trade.”

Another theory was that the guard said, “Can’t finish right, Thibs.”

And he went on to say, “That’s what happens when they let you run the show.”

It was unclear what his words were in reference to or who exactly he was talking to.

Players and coaches shook hands after the game – which led to a potential flash point.

DiVincenzo was seen exchanging words with assistant coach Rick Brunson, who is Jalen Brunson’s dad.

Players stood in between the pair to avoid tempers boiling over.

The Timberwolves star was then led away to the locker room.

Jalen Brunson had an arm round DiVincenzo as the exchange was happening.

“My relationship with Jalen, that’s my brother and my best friend,” DiVincenzo said.

“That’s a separate relationship. I’ll talk about that privately, and figure everything out.”

Jalen Brunson played down the exchange between his did and former Knicks and Vilanova teammate.

He said, “It was words of affirmation.”

The Knicks beat the Timberwolves 115-110 in the preseason clash.

Puzzled fans say ‘this is so random’ as snooker royalty spotted ringside for Beterbiev vs Bivol

RONNIE O’SULLIVAN couldn’t get enough as Artur Beterbiev edged out Dmitry Bivol for undisputed light-heavyweight glory.

Boxing fan O’Sullivan was seated ringside as Bivol suffered a tight and contentious loss to his Russian counterpart Beterbiev by a majority decision.

Fans were left stunned at the result as many thought Bivol had done enough to retain his WBC, IBF and WBO belts.

Yet the judges scored the bout 114-114, 115-113 and 116-12 in Beterbiev’s favour.

Bivol’s promoter Eddie Hearn labelled the decision “absolutely disgusting” and viewers called it a “robbery”.

But O’Sullivan, 48, was one person who enjoyed the fight in the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The seven-time world snooker champ posted a close-up from his ringside seat with the caption: “What a fight!!!!”

And fans were left stunned by his involvement, with one writing: “Ronnie O’Sullivan being there is so random😂.”

While another said: “What is O’Sullivan doing ringside?”

A third wrote: “I did not expect to see Ronnie O’Sullivan there… so random.”

Another replied: “The Rocket is in the house!”

While another added: “From Ronnie O’Sullivan to Medvedev at the Beterbiev vs Bivol fight, who would have thought.”

But fans shouldn’t be that surprised as O’Sullivan agreed to become an ambassador for Saudi Arabian snooker in April.

He penned terms on a three-year deal with the Gulf State and will commit to playing in all World Snooker Tour (WST) events in Saudi Arabia.

The Rocket lost 6-4 to Si Jiahui at the quarter-final stage of the inaugural Saudi Arabia Masters in Riyadh last month and has backed the venue as “one of the world’s best”.

Meanwhile, O’Sullivan wasn’t the only random sporting star in attendance.

Xbox allows players to buy and stream games right from their smartphones in new app feature

XBOX has made a major announcement for new app features that will change the way we play.

Within the big four console makers, Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam, Xbox is the only one that doesn’t offer a handheld option.

TAKE A LOOK
Xbox will let you play games through your Android phone

The Nintendo Switch can be used as both a home and portable console, while PlayStation players can stream games on their phones or via the PlayStation Portal.

Steam is known as the biggest online storefront for PC games, and released a handheld gaming computer in 2022.

Before the PS Portal, PlayStation also had dedicated handheld consoles including the PS Vita and PS Portable.

However, Xbox has never entered the handheld market, even since the first console released in 2001.

Xbox president Sarah Bond announced on Twitter that Xbox would soon offer players a way to stream and purchase games from their phones.

She wrote: “The court’s ruling to open up Google’s mobile store in the US will allow more choice and flexibility.

“Our mission is to allow more players to play on more devices so we are thrilled to share that starting in November, players will be able to play and purchase Xbox games directly from the Xbox App on Android.”

The programme will start with Xbox Insiders who will test out the new app features in November, but the general public will have to wait a little longer.

It is likely that most people will be able to try the feature by early 2025, though it probably will not be running smoothly in the first few months.

We expect there will be teething issues with remote play in the first few months, but those should be smoothed out as they go.

Purchasing games through the app will likely be implemented easily now that Google has opened up the marketplace.

It should be noted that these new features will only be available for Android users, due to the US court ruling that Google has to open the Android marketplace to competitors.

The ruling also only applies to the United States, though other countries may take action based on it in the future.

Arrest of Trump’s ‘third assassin’ shows intense pressure on US authorities after TWO near-deadly blunders, expert says

THE US Secret Service is under immense pressure to protect Donald Trump after a possible third attempt on his life in only four months, an expert told The Sun.

Security specialist Will Geddes said that although the most recent threat to the former president may have been a false alarm – protection in the run-up to the November election is vital.

Will explained: “The greatest level of pressure right now is on the head of the Secret Service.

“It is essential that they are absolutely on their game, and they are fully aware of what is going on, and that they are applying their best practices to the protection of Donald Trump.

“All of us within the security sector, I believe, were not naive enough to believe that the very first assassination attempt on Donald Trump was going to be the very last.

“It was inevitable that we were going to see future or further attacks, and whether this particular instance falls into that category again that has yet to be decided.”

He warned: “The closer we get to those elections in November, the greater the chances are that there will be subsequent attempts on Donald Trump’s life.”

Las Vegas resident Vem Miller, 49, was arrested in California on Saturday just a mile from one of Donald Trump‘s campaign rallies.

Driving an SUV with fake plates and carrying false identification, press cards and two unregistered firearms, Miller was taken into custody.

Riverdale County Sheriff Chad Bianco said he believes Miller intended to kill the Republican presidential candidate and that local police prevented an attack.

The closer we get to those elections in November, the greater the chances are that there will be subsequent attempts on Donald Trump’s life

Will Geddes Security specialist

Miller has vehemently denied the charges after being released on bail yesterday – insisting he is an avid Trump supporter – and the incident is not being investigated as an attempt on his life.

Just weeks ago another man was charged with attempting to kill the White House nominee after staking him out on a golf course in Florida.

And in July Trump took a bullet to the ear at a rally in Pennsylvania when he was shot at mid-speech.

The Secret Service came under intense scrutiny for failing to spot and prevent shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks from unleashing bullets into the crowd.

Trump’s speech on Saturday at Calhoun Ranch, Riverside County, was delivered from behind a bulletproof glass screen in light of the attempts on his life.

Will said of the Secret Service: “They have already lost face, and they will continue to lose face, should they fail again.

“The Secret Service will have been entirely discredited worldwide, and may even have to be entirely overhauled.”

He explained how this weekend’s incident came down to local police, in this case the Riverside County Sheriff’s department, to intercept Miller – a “suspicious individual”.

“It was the Riverside County sheriff… inevitably it will be a local police department whenever Donald Trump has one of these rallies, who will be providing that outer cordon of security,” Will said.

Miller was arrested about a mile outside of the central rally when police spotted his fake license plates.

Will said: “So how much credit can be given to the Secret Service?

“The Riverside County sheriff’s department were very much on their game.

“Two deputies that identified this vehicle, namely, by a fake registration plate… they then subjected him to a closer scrutiny.”

The security pro added that after looking at Miller’s “social media and his interactions with the Republican party” it could be unlikely that he was planning an attempt on Trump’s life.

Neither the FBI or the Secret Service are looking at the case as an attempted assassination, according to reports, and Miller was released on a bail of $5,000 after one night in custody.

Sources close to the Trump campaign also told US media there had been no assassination attempt at the Coachella rally.

Will said: “[Trump] is seen as the most potentially viable target by any opposing element in removing or eliminating him.

“Inevitably he has to make himself more visible, more public, more in touch and in reach with his electorate, to be able to stand a good opportunity of potentially winning the elections.

“It is important to see that security, whether that be delivered by the Secret Services, or whether it be by the county sheriffs, in whichever country he is holding a rally, are very much on their game, and they are in attendance.

“The Secret Service have not been proven yet to really be, as I would hope to be, fully on their game other than the last recent alleged attempt on the golf course.”

Who is Vem Miller?

Miller was caught at a checkpoint only a mile from the crowds in Coachella on Saturday when cops spotted an “obviously fake” homemade licence plate on his black SUV.

Both weapons were unregistered and Miller was also carrying drivers’ licenses and passports under different names.

He appears to be part of the right-wing, anti-government “Sovereign Citizens” movement which resists the use of number plates and official ID.

The Las Vegas resident has previously shared pictures online with plenty of high-profile figures including former US presidential candidate and Trump supporter Robert Kennedy Jr, actor Dennis Quiad and controversial Canadian professor Dr Jordan Peterson.

He has also posed up with far-right conspiracist and infamous Capitol riot frontman, the QAnon shaman, former UKIP leader Nigel Farage and disgraced comedian Russel Brand.

Miller told Southern California News Group after his release on Sunday: “These accusations are complete b******t.

“I’m an artist, I’m the last person that would cause any violence and harm to anybody.

“I’ve literally never even shot a gun in my life.

“I don’t know anything about guns,” he added.

The Sovereign Citizen movement is an anti-government group widely considered to be based on conspiracy theories about US law.

Members claim they are not subject to any kind of legislation unless they consent, marking themselves as separate or “sovereign” from the government and wider society.

They view most forms of tax as illegitimate and don’t subscribe to Social Security numbers, drivers licenses or vehicle registration.

The FBI has described the group as a domestic terror threat – placing it in the same category as eco-terrorists and animal rights extremists.

Timeline of assassination attempts on Donald Trump's life

July 13 – Thomas Crooks shot Donald Trump in the ear after hiding on a roof overlooking the former President’s outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Crooks was killed by Secret Service snipers after he fired eight shots at Trump and killed one rallygoer and injured two others.

The bullet came less than a quarter of an inch from striking Trump’s head, Ronny Jackson, the former president’s physician, said.

September 15 – Ryan Routh was seen by a Secret Service agent hiding in the bushes with a rifle at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida.

Trump was playing a round of golf when the alleged would-be assassin managed to get within 400 yard of Trump.

Routh fled the scene in an SUV but was caught by cops and arrested.

October 12 – Riverside County Sheriffs believe Vem Miller tried to enter a Trump rally in Coachella, California, with the intention of killing the President.

They stopped him at the perimeter before Trump had even arrived and booked the 49-year-old on two gun charges.

Sheriff Chad Bianco said it would be up to federal officials to investigate Miller for the alleged assassination, but he believed his deputies had stopped a “third assassination attempt”.

Inside Camilla’s fears for ‘exhausting’ Australia tour amid King Charles health news & coping mechanism she relies on

KING Charles and Queen Camilla are preparing to embark on their nine-day tour to Australia this week and have an action-packed itinerary ahead.

While the visit is historic – Charles’ first as reigning monarch – it could be “extremely exhausting” for Camilla who “doesn’t like flying”, according to an expert.

Camilla is said to not love flying and finds trips ‘exhausting’[/caption]

The royal couple will land in Australia on Friday, then head to Samoa on Wednesday October 23, before departing for the UK on Saturday October 26.

Editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine Ingrid Seward told Fabulous: “Queen Camilla is 76.

“She gets very tired because she’s not born to this royal life.

“I know she’s been in it a long time, but she’s not born to it, and I think people sometimes forget that Camilla’s never actually had a job.

“I think she finds these trips extremely exhausting. She doesn’t like flying.

“She’s not a great traveller, and she’s not good in the heat, because you know her, you know, like a lot of women of her age, you know. her feet swell up, and she feels uncomfortable.

“So it’s not the most pleasurable thing to do for her to whisk across to Australia although it might be really exciting for somebody younger.”

Despite the tour being potentially taxing for Queen Camilla, the royal expert claimed she will make it a success.

Ingrid continued: “I don’t think it’s great for her, but she has got a great humour, and she’s absolutely lovely to everybody.

“She’ll take a hairdresser. She’ll take her dresser, Jackie.

“She’ll have plenty of staff around her to help her, and she’s she is just so good humoured that people really like her.

“Even when there’s a dire situation she can turn it around and make and make it much better.

“She’s what we call an upper person.

“She makes the best of any situation, and she can always make it, you know, find some amusement somewhere to cheer everybody up.”

Both King and Queen will start their trip in Sydney on October 18 before heading to capital Canberra three days later for a banquet with senior politicians.

It’ll be Charles’ 17th visit to Australia but his first trip to a Commonwealth nation since becoming King.

It’s also his first visit to Australia since 2018 when he opened the Commonwealth Games on the Queensland Gold Coast.

Tour change

Royal Editor for The Times Kate Mansey said on the Royals with Roya and Kate podcast that the Australia tour will be “different from royal tours of old.”

She said: “In Australia we are not going to see evening functions, there’s no State Dinner in Australia, which is unusual.

“They are paring back for health reasons, so there are no late nights.

“They’ve said he’s pausing his treatment during the tour, so they must be reasonably reassured that he can go that period of time.

“He’s been having treatment for quite some time now, since the beginning of the year, and on medical advice, he can pause it while he’s away and will resume it when he comes back. “This doesn’t mean he’s finished his cancer treatment—there’s been no announcement on that point of view—but it is a sign that he’s perhaps well enough.

“The fact that he’s going is quite a reassuring sign from his doctors and the palace.”

Kate shared how Charles will meet local Australians, but they have tweaked the name of the traditional “walkabout.”

She explained: “There’s lots of opportunities to meet the public, which is what they’re calling the walkabout.

“They used to be called walkabouts but now because of indigenous sensibilities and the fact that they are used by Aborigines to discuss something more spiritual, going off into the bush, they’re not using the term walkabout.”

Royal snub?

All State Premiers have been invited to the Canberra banquet, but not one has accepted to welcome Charles and Camilla at the reception, it’s reported.

Victoria state Premier Jacinta Allan on Sunday added her name to those that have turned Charles down.

Queensland Premier Steven Miles claims he has work to do on his election campaign.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Western Australia’s Premier, Roger Cook, reportedly said he had “other commitments”.

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas has also excused himself due to a regional cabinet meeting, as did New South Wales Premier Chris Minns.

Minns is expected to attend several other events with the King during his time in Australia.

It comes after Charles vowed to not stand in the way if Australia wants to become a republic.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “Like his mother before him, it has always been the case that His Majesty The King feels that it is a matter for the Australian people.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese vowed he would not hold a referendum in his first term out of “deep respect” for the late Queen.

Australia last held a referendum on becoming a republic in 1999 in which 54.87 per cent voted against it.

Female cop who joined police to avenge dad murdered when she was 9 ARRESTS killer after tracking him down 25 years later

A DAUGHTER’S mission to get justice for her father’s murder has come to an end after she caught the runaway killer and arrested him.

Gislayne Silva de Deus from Boa Vista in Roraima, Brazil, was just nine years old when her father Givaldo Jose Vicente de Deus, 35, was shot and killed.

The father of five was murdered in February 1999 in the Asa Branca neighbourhood after a fight broke out over a £20 debt.

He was reportedly shot at point-blank range while playing pool with a friend.

Deus was the owner of a supermarket and Raimundo Alves Gomes, who has been convicted of the murder, was one of his suppliers.

According to Silva, her father had offered Alves Gomes a freezer in order to settle the debt, but this was rejected.

The police officer claimed that after this dispute, her father’s killer left the venue and returned half an hour later with a gun.

A fight between the two men ensued during which Deus suffered a fatal gunshot wound despite attempts in hospital to save him.

FIGHT FOR JUSTICE

Silva who vowed to get justice for her father started studying law at the age of 18 before joining the police force where she took up several positions.

The cop admitted to fantasising about the day her father’s killer would serve his sentence behind bars.

“When I was a prison [police officer], I always imagined [the killer] arriving there to serve his sentence,” she told local media.

The determined daughter described her father as an “honest and hard-working man” when speaking to Brazilian news outlet G1.

When I saw the man who was responsible for my dad’s death was finally in handcuffs, I couldn’t hold back the tears.

“My sisters and I went through really difficult times after we lost him,” she added.

Once she was assigned to the General Homicide Division, Silva began tracking down her father’s killer.

Her tireless efforts came to an end last month when Alves Gomes, now 60 years old, was arrested in Boa Vista on September 25, thanks to her dedicated work.

‘GOING TO PAY’

The 36-year-old cop was able to confront her father’s killer face-to-face 25 years after he murdered Deus.

“When I saw the man who was responsible for my dad’s death was finally in handcuffs, I couldn’t hold back the tears,” Silva told G1.

“It was an explosion of feelings that turned into tears of relief, as it seemed like this day would never come.”

Footage from the police station after the arrest showed Alves Gomes leaning back in a chair while Silva calmly spoke to him with her hands clasped in front of her.

“It’s because of me that you are here, and you are now going to pay,” she told the murderer.

He reportedly told cops that he had no intention of killing Deus that day in 1999.

Alves Gomes had previously been arrested for the murder but was released from custody before his trial began.

He was found guilty of the murder in 2013 and went on the run in 2016 when authorities issued a warrant for his arrest.

On September 26, 2024, Alves Gomes’ conviction was upheld by a judge and the killer was sent to prison for 12 years.

With the statute of limitations for homicide defendants in Brazil being 20 years, a seven-year deadline was looming for cops to find and arrest Alves Gomes.

‘With his arrest, I cleansed my soul and that of my entire family. It was the end of a cycle,” Silva told local media.

“Today we have peace and the feeling that justice was served.

“This won’t bring our father back, but [the killer] will serve the sentence he should have served many years ago.”
