Watch dramatic vid showing shivering & purple-faced Brit climber stuck on icy ledge at 21,000ft with ‘no hope’ of rescue

THIS is the chilling footage of a shivering, purple-faced Brit trapped 21,000ft up a mountain after getting caught in a snowstorm.

Fay Manners, 37, went missing in northern India alongside her American pal Michelle Dvorak, 31, last week with the women left with almost “no faith” that they’d ever be discovered.

The women spent 55 hours and two nights in horror conditions up the Chaukhamba III mountain as they prayed to be rescued.

A deathly snowstorm battered the region as the pair attempted to become the first people to summit the 23,000ft mountain.

Fay and Michelle lost a bag in the torrid weather as it plunged down into a rocky ravine – leaving their essentials like food, a tent and climbing equipment lost forever.

The dramatic footage was filmed by a shivering Fay as the duo sat stranded.

Fay can be heard saying in the horror video: “No sign of a rescue and we’re really f***ing cold.

“It’s snowing. No food and water. At the moment we can’t get off of the mountain.”

She can be seen turning purple in the face during the short clip as the weather continued to take its toll.

The pair were forced to share a sleeping bag with many of Fay’s clothes lost down the ravine, forcing her to stay in her wet and freezing climbing gear.

Rescue teams were deployed with the women saying they could see and hear the helicopters on several occasions despite it not being able to spot them.

They were only found on Saturday October 5, when a team of French mountaineers stumbled across them and alerted the authorities.

After the miracle rescue Fay told The Telegraph she thought she was going to freeze, starve or fall to her death as the hours ticked by.

She revealed that by the second night the two women were “barely surviving”.

Fay added: “I felt hypothermic, constantly shaking and with the lack of food my body was running out of energy to keep warm.

“Saturday morning came, we both barely survived the night.

“The helicopter flew past again but couldn’t see us. We were destroyed and we were losing faith.”

Fay first realised they were in serious danger during the climb when six days in one of their climbing ropes severed.

They were just 2,300ft below the summit when a sudden rockfall sliced the climbing gear that was helping to haul up their rucksack.

Inside the bag was the pair’s tent and stove as well as bundles of warm clothes and climbing equipment like ice axes and crampons.

Losing those items left both women fearing they may fall, starve or freeze to death up the mountain.

Fay said: “I watched the bag tumble down the mountain and I immediately knew the consequence of what was to come.”

After realising the severity of their situation the women decided to stay put on a ledge so they were at least safe for a few days.

Fay had sent a frantic message with Michelle back to the base camp saying they were in trouble as the pair hoped to be rescued.

A desperate search was launched with choppers scouring the snow-capped mountainous region for any sign of the experienced climbers.

But the arctic weather became so bad overnight that the search had to be suspended.

Fay described the conditions as “brutal”.

But when all hope seemed lost, a trio of French climbers who planned on scaling the very same route miraculously found the woman.

Palin Clovis, Jacques Olivier Chevallier and Vivien Berlaud gave up on their own climbing ambitions when they heard about Fay and Michelle as they started to help look for the ladies.

Fay said: “As we were abseiling down on Saturday we could see a team of climbers coming up the mountain towards us.

“When we reached them, they said they were there to help us and I cried with relief knowing we might survive.

“They supported us to get across the steep glacier that would have been impossible without our equipment, crampons and ice axes.

“They gave us their tent and sleeping bags, gave us water and food and finally told the helicopter where to come and collect us.”

On Sunday morning at around 7am local time the two women were picked up by an Indian air force chopper on the Panpatia Bank Glacier and airlifted to the town of Joshimath.

Col Madan Gurung, who helped with the rescue operation, said the women were “exhausted” when he first saw them but “perfectly fine”.

At 7am local time on Sunday 6, (2.30am BST), an Indian air force helicopter landed at 5,300 metres above sea level on the Panpatia Bank Glacier and airlifted Ms Manners and Ms Dvorak to safety in Joshimath, a town 21 miles to the south-east.

Col Madan Gurung, who co-ordinated the rescue operation for the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), said the women were found to be “exhausted” but in otherwise “perfectly fine” health.

Fay, from Bedford, is an pro alpinist who looks to “inspire women to pursue their interest” in mountaineering.

She moved from the UK to the Alps to follow her passion in the outdoor sport.

Her impressive climbing history includes making the first female ascent on the Phantom Direct route on the south face of the Grand Jorasses, according to her website.

She is now set to spend some time in New Delhi where she hopes to eat, relax and sleep as much as possible.

Despite the scary experience up the mountain Fay says she will continue to scale more in the future after some time off.

Michelle is also a very experienced climber and is a teaching assistant at the University of Washington, according to her Facebook.

Chris Eubank Jr faces Kamil Szeremeta on the undercard[/caption]

Fabio Warldey will battle Frazer Clarke in a highly-anticipated rematch after their epic first bout ended in a split draw.

While Chris Eubank Jr makes his long-awaited return to the ring against Polish star Kamil Szeremeta.

Find out where you can watch all three thrilling matches below.

What channel can I watch the fights on?

DAZN PPV, Sky Sports Box Office and TNT Sports Box Office will all broadcast the three huge fights.

TNT Sports and DAZN have both priced the event at £19.99, while Sky Sports are charging customers £19.95.

Depending on which PPV you purchase, you can live stream the huge bill on either the DAZN app, discovery+ or Sky Sports Box Office app.

The coverage is starting at 5pm BST with the first fight at 5.30pm – the main event is expected between 11pm and 11.30pn.

Alternatively, you can follow all the action via SunSport’s LIVE BLOG.

Who else is fighting on the card?

The WBC women’s featherweight title will be up for grabs as reigning champion Skye Nicolson looks to defend her crown against Raven Chapman

And Ben Whittaker is set to take on his fellow British compatriot Liam Cameron.

What has been said?

Several legends of the sport have been weighing in on who they think will come out on top in the main event between Beterbiev and Bivol.

This includes former light heavyweight world champion Roy Jones Jr.

The American ace said: “That’s a very, very good fight, and I have a hard time predicting it.

“I’ve heard that the guys have sparred a few times, and one of them may have gotten the better of the other, but I don’t know. In theory, if I didn’t know that they had sparred before I would pick Bivol.

“Because Beterbiev is a puncher, and if he can hit Bivol, he’ll knock him out for sure. Because to me, Beterbiev is one of the best pound-for-pound punchers this game has ever seen. If he can hurt Bivol with his punches, if he can catch him then he has a chance.

“So that being said, Beterbiev is a good puncher, but I don’t know if he takes a good punch because he’s been down three or four times in nearly twenty fights. If you’ve been down that much in twenty fights, there’s a problem there.

“I really think Bivol has the advantage and I’ll go with him.”

Best Buy to close down popular location after 30 years in business – and 25 more will shutter in latest retail massacre

A POPULAR Best Buy location will shutter it’s doors at the end of the month after 30 years in the same location.

It’s the latest store to face the chopping block after the consumer electronics company confirmed that more stores would get axed.

Best Buy in Gaithersburg, Maryland will close on October 26, 2024 after 30 years[/caption]

The Gaithersburg 270 Center will close it’s doors one last time on October 26 after initially opening them in the 90s.

The closure is somewhat unsurprising for the shoppers who once frequented the location.

First reported by The MocoShow, shoppers took to the comment section to voice their opinion.

One person said: “When they stopped selling movies, that’s when I stopped shopping there.”

Another added: “This is how they killed their business model.

“Take everything out that drew in the foot traffic like movies and music.

“Now I only have to go there every ten to fifteen years to pick out a new washer, dryer, refrigerater, computer or something else along those lines.”

A third commented: “No loss, Best Buys hasn’t been best for a long time now.”

In an earnings call, CEO Corie Barry said shoppers could expect 10 to 15 shuttered locations in 2024 and a similar amount in the following year.

That means a potential 25 stores or more could close by the end of 2025.

Barry added that the retailer was trying to “strike a balance between its workforce and consumer interest.”

CFO Matthew Bilunas added on the call that Best Buy would “continue to close existing traditional stores during our rigorous review of stores as their leases come up for renewal.”

Several contributing factors to the closures — including changes in consumer spending habits, inflation rates, and supply chain issues from the height of the coronavirus pandemic — were cited by Barry as well.

Locations in CaliforniaColoradoOhioMinnesotaMissouri, and Virginia have already closed, per Fox affiliate WFXT.

Local shoppers can still head to the nearest Best Buy stores in Germantown and Rockville.

Other locations closing nationwide have yet to be identified.

The tech retailer currently has 1,053 remaining locations, per its website.

Sales for Best Buy have also been an issue over the past few fiscal quarters.

SALES STRUGGLES

At the end of the second quarter of this year, the brand’s revenue dropped about three percent from $9.6 billion to $9.3 billion from the same time in 2023.

Last year, it also saw an overall revenue decline of six percent, according to Retail Dive.

Barry said Best Buy is adjusting to different consumer habits, which include those “seeking value in sales events and one who is also willing to spend on high price-point products when they need to or when there is new, compelling technology,” per a recent earnings call.

She also expressed confidence about Best Buy’s position moving forward.

“We don’t believe anything in our data signals that customer behavior has changed in a way that would make us increasingly cautious,” Barry added.

EXPRESS EXCITEMENT

Best Buy also made a significant move to open hundreds of additional stores in Canada earlier this year under a different business format.

The company partnered with Bell Canada, which proclaims itself as the largest telecommunications company in the country, to open 167 Express stores by the end of the year.

Each Express location comes with a “curated assortment of tech” and offers in-store pickup through online orders.

Specialists from the Geek Squad are also stationed in the smaller stores for service and plan protections on phones and gadgets.

Reasons Behind Best Buy Closures

In a recent earnings call, Best Buy CEO & Director Corie Sue Barry noted various factors that contributed to the decision to close store doors:

  • Change in consumer spending habits
  • Lowering of product innovation during pandemic
  • Inflation
  • Supply chain-challenged years
  • Stagnant housing market
  • Macro pressures impacting overall retail
  • Low level of product innovation

Dad of Brit facing 60yrs in US prison for ‘trying to smuggle £3.5m in cocaine’ insists she is ‘only guilty of stupidity’

THE DAD of a Brit beautician facing up to 60 years in jail in the US after allegedly smuggling £3.5million worth of cocaine has insisted she is “only guilty of stupidity”.

John Hall, 59, defended his daughter Kim, 28, after she was detained at Chicago’s O’Hare airport as she was waiting for her connecting flight to Manchester.

The dad said she was offered the free holiday by people she met on an earlier trip to Portugal.

And he insisted all she is guilty of is “stupidity and naivety” as they desperately wait for news.

John said that she is “petrified” – and that at first she could barely speak to her family through floods of tears after the arrest.

The dad is convinced that Kim would have been “forced” to carry the drugs “without a shadow of a doubt”.

John told The Sun: “She’s not a drug smuggler.

“She was told that it would be money she was carrying. They got her phone and threatened her family and that’s why she did it.

“She’d been to Portugal with a friend and met people over there who contacted her when she was back saying they were into real estate in Mexico and she could go for a free holiday.

“Her friend declined but she said she would go.

“She’s never been into trouble, nothing at all. She’s had a good upbringing and has always worked for her money.

“The only thing she’s guilty of is being stupid and being naive.”

Homeland Security investigators swooped after finding 43kg of cocaine in two suitcases.

Kim insists she was forced to carry the bags for two men who had offered her a free holiday to Cancun but threatened her once she was there.

The self-employed beautician, of Middlesbrough, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession with intent to deliver after her arrest in August.

As the amount she was allegedly found with is more than 900 grams the offence is in the top bracket for sentencing – it is a Class X Felony which carries 15-60 years in prison.

She has already made a number of preliminary appearances at the Circuit Court of Cook County and is being held in Chicago awaiting trial, which could be a year off.

Without a shadow of a doubt she was forced into carrying this stuff back

John Hall

Her family, who have had to shell out £28,000 for a local attorney, are terrified about her physical and mental well-being.

John added: “For the first few weeks, you couldn’t speak to her for the tears.

“She said: ‘You don’t understand what they were threatening me with’. That’s as much as we can get out of her.

“She’s petrified.

“Without a shadow of a doubt she was forced into carrying this stuff back.

“And I’m not just saying that to try and protect my daughter.

“I’m telling you that as a father who knows a daughter inside out.”

A Cook County court spokeswoman said: “Her next appearance is on November 13.”

‘Son of Concorde’ supersonic jet achieves new speed record in major progress towards 3.5hr flights from London to NYC

A JET dubbed ‘the son of Concorde’ has achieved a new speed record in major progress towards 3.5 hour flights from London to New York.

Supersonic Boom’s XB-1 jet has been put to the test to try to bring back superspeed travel between the UK and US.

Boom Supersonic XB-1, (taken without permission), https://boomsupersonic.com/flyby/xb-1-live-blog-flight-test-program
The intended speed for the aircraft is 1,300 mph
Boom Supersonic XB-1, (taken without permission), https://boomsupersonic.com/flyby/xb-1-live-blog-flight-test-program
On October 7, it achieved its highest speed yet

The aircraft was inspired by the 1969 Concorde which flew passengers from New York to London in under three hours at Mach 2 (around 1,345 mph).

The XB-1 is essentially the “test platform” for the Boom Overture, New Atlas reports.

If tests are successful a supersonic airliner carrying between 64 and 80 passengers could be available from 2029.

Creators want the aircraft to reach Mach 1.7 (around 1,300 mph).

Concorde flew at a maximum speed of 2.05, more than twice the speed of sound.

The XB-1, which has a range of 4,250 miles, achieved its fastest speed yet on October 7.

Chief test Pilot Tristan “Geppetto” Brandenburg took the aircraft out for its fifth spin from the XB-1 from Mojave Air and Space Port.

Geppetto flew the jet 17,800 feet into the sky pushing it as fast as Mach 0.69 (around 492 mph).

However, it still has another five subsonic test flights to go before it breaks Mach 1 (around 667 mph).

During the XB-1’s fifth trial, its flutter excitation system (FES) reached Mach 0.6 a terrifying speed, especially for a test pilot.

The FES measures the structural vibrations of an aircraft in flight and provides dynamic force input to control them.

Managing structural vibrations avoids potentially devastating effects while up in the air.

A short history of the Concorde

THE CONCORDE was the first supersonic passenger-carrying luxury airplane.

Two decades ago the Concorde took its first-ever flight.

It became supersonic in 1969, flying passengers from New York to London in less than three hours.

It was the only aircraft in the British Airways fleet that required a flight engineer.

Concorde needed unsustainable amounts of fuel and created very loud sonic booms.

Then, in July 2000, a horror accident saw 113 people killed when an Air France Concorde ran over a small piece of metal while taking off from Charles de Gaulle Airport.

It caused the tyre to explode and the engine to ignite.

A year after the horrific crash, 9/11 majorly affected passenger numbers.

Ultimately a combination of these events led to its downfall.

By 2003, Air France and British Airways announced they would be retiring their fleet of Concorde planes.

Although the Overture will mostly fly over water, its noise reduction design will reduce sonic booms, which contributed to the end of Concorde in 2003.

Symphony, its turbojet engine, can run at both high and low speeds on sustainable aviation fuel.

Running at a lower speed means the Overture can land on the same runways as typical commercial aircrafts like the Boeing 737 or the Airbus A380.

Manufacturing for Overture will start in 2025, with test flights by 2027.

United Airlines could be the airline poised to snap it up, according to reports.

Timeline of the Boom XB-1 Supersonic

  • Flight One

On March 22, 2024 with pilot Bill “Doc” Shoemaker in the cockpit, the XB-1 embarked on its first flight.

Doc achieved an altitude of 7,120 feet and speeds up to 238 knots (273 mph).

It flew for 12 minutes in the air.

  • Flight Two

In August, 2024, the XB-1 flew for a second time with Chief Test Pilot Tristan “Geppetto” Brandenburg.

Geppetto reached a max altitude of 10,400ft and a speed of 270 knots.

It flew for 15 minutes in the air.

  • Flight Three

September 2024, marked the XB-1’s third run, with a max altitude of 15,000 feet and a speed of 289 knots.

Geppetto flew it for 32 minutes in the air.

  • Flight Four

Also in September, the XB-1 reached a max altitude of 16,150 feet and a speed of Mach 0.617 (382 knots).

Geppetto flew it for 48 minutes in the air.

Great Britain are aiming to win the event for the first time[/caption]

The BBC were reportedly offered the chance to show the event for FREE but still failed to reach an agreement.

Reports from The Telegraph claim they had an issue with branding on the live feed’s transition.

This year’s America’s Cup is sponsored by Louis Vuitton.

But in the 11th hour, the BBC reached an agreement and they are now showing the battle for the Auld Mug.

Fans can watch on the iPlayer, Red Button, BBC website or app.

A spokesperson for the America’s Cup told The Telegraph: “We are very happy that BBC is taking the live feed of the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup racing.

“It will be an historical event no matter whether Ineos Britannia win the America’s Cup for the first time in 173 years, or Emirates Team New Zealand can win it for the 3rd time in a row.

“It is great that the UK will be able to watch the racing free and live on BBC.”
