The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) is accelerating discussions with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to dismantle overpasses in anticipation of the Orange Line’s expansion. This strategic move is set to facilitate the construction of the western segment of the Bang Khun Non-Min Buri rail system, aiming for completion by 2030.

Vithaya Punmongkol, acting governor for the MRTA, announced that a Notice to Proceed had been issued to Bangkok Expressway and Metro (BEM), the concessionaire for the Orange Line, at the end of July. This initiative signifies a crucial step forward in the project’s development.

The BEM is presently focused on acquiring mechanical and electrical systems for the line’s eastern section, stretching from the Thailand Cultural Centre to Min Buri. With construction expected to span three years and six months, this segment is scheduled to commence service by late 2027 or early 2028.

In the western section, from Bang Khun Non to the Thailand Cultural Centre, contractors have begun preparing public areas for the construction of tunnels and underground stations. Initial phases involve surveying infrastructure, utilities, and communication systems to facilitate relocations, a process anticipated to take four to nine months.

Land expropriation plans, governed by the Royal Decree on Land Expropriation, are set for 2025 with a budget of 14 billion baht (US$415 million) allocated for land management and real estate assessments within the western section. The plan encompasses 380 land plots, 410 real estate, and the demolition of approximately 400 buildings.

Civil construction in the Pratunam area is slated to begin in February next year. Vithaya also noted that discussions with the BMA concerning the dismantling of overpasses at Pratunam, Ratchathewi, and Sutthavas intersections are imminent. Additionally, coordination with the Fine Arts Department will be sought for construction activities in Bangkok’s Old Town conservation areas.

Orange line

The entire western segment of the Orange Line is projected to be operational by the end of 2030.

In parallel, the MRTA acting governor provided updates on the Southern Purple Line project, which spans 23.63 kilometres from Tao Poon to Rat Burana. Currently, 42.18% of the rail system’s construction is completed, with expectations for operation by 2028.

A study regarding train operations is on track to be finalised and presented to the MRTA Board by next month before being proposed to a Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) committee. The selection process for the concessionaire is expected to begin early next year, targeting an operational start in 2029, reported Bangkok Post.

Progress on the Pink Line’s 3-kilometre extension from Sri Rat to Muang Thong Thani reached 71.09% by the end of September.
