Boxing Day is a tradition in Britain and its Commonwealth countries, celebrated on 26 December every year. The day is also seen as a tradition for providing gifts to servants, merchants, and the poor. The tradition began during the Victorian period or 1837-1901, when the wealthy used the day to present their servants with gifts or “boxes” for their year-round service.
Samuel Pepys, a British parliamentary member, mentioned “Boxing Day” in his diary in 1663. He wrote about his cobbler presenting a “boy’s box”, which contained money and gifts. In churches too, money was collected from alms boxes and distributed to the poor.
It is also known as St. Stephen’s Day, who was famous for the help he rendered to the poor and the first Christian martyr. In this sense, the well-known Christmas song “Good King Wenceslas” also refers to the charity by the king on St. Stephen’s Day.
Today, Boxing Day is primarily celebrated as a holiday for a day of leisure. It is a public holiday in Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. People enjoy leftovers from Christmas, like turkey sandwiches, and sometimes even drink light wine or cocktails, such as champagne mimosas.
Sports continue with this time-honored tradition on Boxing Day. Sports activities on Boxing Day in Australia range from football matches to horse racing and cricket test matches. In Britain, it has been common to have charity work through the activity of plunging in the water on this day.
It has become popular recently as a shopping festival with colossal discounts offered in shops, even referred to as “Britain’s Black Friday” by some. It also comes in “Boxing Week” which runs throughout the month, in some areas.
The people celebrate the day as the Day of Goodwill since 1994 in South Africa. Boxing Day is observed as the second Christmas Day in Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and all of Scandinavia.
Shopping, games, and entertainments have replaced the original usage when this day was once associated with charity for the poor and servants. The day will remind a social solidarity and charity spirit together with history and tradition preserved.
